I know nada about ao3 or fan fiction sites in general. What I DO know is a good metaphor when I see one. This one about Internet cross-pollination is perfection. Especially for me right now as I’ve set off into my (IRL) gardening era. The importance of cross-pollination in both contexts can not be understated.

Neat! I had this *exact* idea like 15 years ago but never had the energy ( or maybe know-how? ) to bring it to life. Back then the web seemed a bit less hostile… I have more fears and doubts about how well this concept would work today, but I think it’s awesome that someone’s going to try to make it happen. Joined in 2018 out of curiosity. Rejoined in 2022 during the early stages of the Elonification of Twitter. I was never much of a Twitter-er anyways (just lurking mostly) but out of principle, and because I saw infosec folks coming to Fedi, I went to.
I’ve stayed (and will continue to stay) for so many reasons….
- My awesome curated timeline filled with wonderful people.
- The level of ownership I have of my presence and data
- Fediversal interoperability
To name a few!

Quick somewhat-related question though. I’ve noticed in this research, and *so* many other similar published white papers, that the authors do not include a Published Date. Why is this? At best I’ll get a year-published for citation purposes, but I’d personally love to know the month+day as well.

Not that it’s the *most* reliable indicator, but a similar trend is evident in what I see on vuln garden. This year we have 83 “named vulns” and we’re not even half way through the year. This pace could see 200+ while no year prior has ever gone over 130. It also seems like a majority of findings coming out recently are from AI shops (V12, those copyfail buggers, xbox, etc…)

This is one of those instances that is kinda on the fence for me in terms of inclusion in the garden… I kinda read this as “ssh-keysign-pwn” being the name of the script, or the name of the repo and not so much it being a “named” vuln. It’s pretty subjective as I’ve explained before though so 🤷‍♂️. It doesn’t have a website, or a logo. The author (in the repo) never really says anything like “named” or “dubbed” or “called” —> ssh-keysign-pwn. Not that it’s that important but yeah..

infosec.exchange probably has a bit of this vibe. Sure, there are plenty of “broadcast-ey” types on there, but there’s also a solid population of folks that converse, comment, and otherwise *respond* to posts, not just publish. Having a topic-specific instance (like “infosec”) can help with this.

Fedi has been around for ~13 years and Mastodon has been around for about 9 of those. For anyone wondering how Fedi "wins", I think you need to ask instead, "what does it mean to win"? We've gotten this far w/o VC funding and continue to grow (even if it isn't at breakneck speeds). We win by being here. Being here for everyone who *finally* realizes that corporate social platforms are forever-doomed. Everything else is second, and will probably come in time.

Here's how I've distinguished my different formats/post types thus far - https://shellsharks.com/multiplicity-of-writing. But honestly, I don't think you really need to distinguish between posts that are point-in-time vs. living. Update the posts you want to update, end of story. I update things of mine all the time, regardless of post type and have never thought to create separate types based on that criteria. As for URI...it's the indieweb! Just pick one and go with it. Forget about timelessness.

GitHub Pages having some sort of outage. Not good news for me-who just wants to tinker and poke around my site... 😫

I don't know the context. But I can to say it's sad to see someone delete their site/portfolio. There's plenty of reasons to maybe delete or step away from social media though 🤷‍♂️

I agree 100%. But I wonder sometimes how important it is for your "average" person that the Internet is “better”. I had a pitch that I wrote up directed at Threads-users about why Fediverse integration (if it ever really comes to Threads) is so cool and valuable and important (https://shellsharks.com/notes/2023/11/16/hark-threaders-the-fediverse-is-good-for-you). Not sure it got any traction, but based on some of the discussion there, I just don't think people care, whether they understand it or not. A lot of that goin' around in the world today

What is the measure of “success" here? In many ways, I think Mastodon has been a huge success. If raw MAU is the measure, the features we might want to see come are different than if the measure was say, longevity or some form of “user satisfaction”.
Look at what has driven people away from here to understand what could be fixed…
- Safety & security
- Confusion around onboarding / instance-selection
- More feed/timeline options
- Poor instance moderation or admin-ship
- etc…

Yeah i know. but it's a managed instance (masto.host) so I can't modify anything at that level 😭

Just my opinion, and I waffle on this, but my current thinking is that "big tech”'s emphasis on algorithms to deliver people's micro-blogging/social media content has made too many folks completely reliant on the algo-feeds to bring them stuff. Here, you curate a feed which is volume and content-appropriate and tend it like a garden. Sure, reach and discoverability take a hit, but I find the higher fidelity, more manageable feed is just - healthier.

If you're like me, you would regret not having been here at some point. I kinda wrote about this here https://shellsharks.com/notes/2024/11/18/hold-the-line-stay-with-me.
I get why people like to go some place where they feel like they "have a lot of followers”. 90% of Bluesky traffic seems to be about this right now so you definitely wouldn't be in the minority.
What's nice is that the Fediverse is resilient. It can ebb and flow, but it can't fall the same way these centralized platforms do.
So, Build your communities here.

I think Bluesky has moved from the, "no one is here, yell loudly about Bluesky" phase to the “some people are actually here, yell loudly about Bluesky" phase. People seem more concerned with creating starter packs, amassing followers, posting about how many followers they have, and talking shit about every other network despite having been on those networks up until like a week ago. In time people will (likely) settle in and have more substantial discourse (maybe?)
