@nprofile…7l9w IPv6 is a privacy issue because now you can easily identify every home using the public 64-bit (if the ISP is penny-pinching, 70-bit or more) address prefix as a super cookie, lifetime varies but originally designed to be permanent. Use the Web long enough, a random web shop data breach would eventually allow everyone to link aaaa:bbbb:cccc:dddd::random to your phone number or home address. In comparison, IPv4 address is either CGNAT or pooled. I think this is still a very real problem, but it's the cost of getting stable server connectivity. The solution is VPN, Tor, dedicated broadband for servers, as usual. Ironically, mismanaged ISPs are doing pooled IPv6 prefixes like pooled IPv4, unintentionally providing enhanced privacy at the cost of random outage (if your router does not implement Flash Renumbering protection, OpenWrt didn't until 2026). In theory users should be able to freely opt-in/out prefix rotations, and all rotations would be planned via router announcement rather than a forced "flash" one. But one can dream.

Motor is a mechanical device, so I don't think any circuit simulator can simulate the mechanical behavior of a motor, with influences its electrical characteristics under load. You can simulate a motor driver circuit for sure, and you can also model the motor as a load impedance, and you can observe the output voltage waveform. But the emulator is not going to tell you whether a real motor has enough torque. If that motor costs a million dollar, you can do multi-physics circuit + mechanical FEM simulations to tell, but I don't think most engineers would simulate the whole motors to design a circuit.

1. Express the circuit schematics as a "SPICE netlist", a SPICE netlist is the universal language of circuit emulator.
2. Run the "netlist" through a SPICE-style simulator. The original SPICE was free software from Berkeley, and ngSPICE is the spiritual successor of it.
But in practice the problem is not that simple.
1. The simulator is best at simulating ideal parts, such as passive RLCs, ideal op-amps, etc. However, working with ideal parts teaches you circuit theory, but nothing about practical design with off-the-shelf parts and ICs.
2. Models of off-the-shelf parts and ICs exist, but often with a propertiary favor of SPICE with non-standard extentions, such as PSPICE or LTspice, so they're usually not compatible among the SPICE implementations. In particular, most models are obfuscated.
3. For a long time, few free software GUI existed for schematics entry. This problem is largely worked around in recent years by reusing KiCad as the front-end.
4. "one could design and test a circuit in its entirety" This is just not going to happen. Unlike IC design where there's a strong motivation for faithful simulation of all non-ideal effects, in comparison, faithful simulation is rarely attempted by most engineers for PCB-level designs. Circuit parasitics or exact internal IC behaviors are not often modeled. Simulation is used only a rough guideline.
5. Much background knowledge is needed to get what you want from the simulator, For example, setting up the circuit parameters of a realistic power or small-signal diode. In comparison, a breadboard allows you to just connect things randomly and see what happens. If the simulator is incorrectly configured, it can be extremely difficult to get the circuit to run at all, "error: matrix is singular". Worse, you can also get non-physical results. A classic example is the startup process of a LC circuit without resistance. Without losses, initial the transient never dies, and you can two waves instead of one.
6. To my best knowledge, there is no ready-made mixed-domain simulations to mix passive parts, logic or microcontroller code, this is sometimes a feature for proprietary EDAs.
So paradoxically, I think circuit simulators are usable only after you already know some electronics. Great to try some ideas, learn circuit theory and circuit topologies. Not great to replace the oscilloscope and the breadboard.

It's still pretty difficult to route a single-layer board with KiCad. Who still uses single-layer board these days? Pretty much everyone who does anything modern with a 2-layer PCB, the bottom layer is the EMC/RF ground plane, so there's only 1 effective layer. There really should be a "jumper manager" that allows you to add ad-hoc wires and THT/SMD resistors, perhaps with back-annotation. #electronics

I guess the "Rewrite in Rust" movement is more about using Rust's popularity as an excuse to create community-approved breaking changes and clean-slate designs. PaX Team added the essential security feature W^X to C in the early 2000s, and guess what, this made a lot of application people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move. Speaking of flash drives... We know that are many cursed cheap-ass USB flash drives that would just brick if you dare to write a non-FAT32 filesystem. Why? There are only guesses: buggy controller logic behaves unpredictably with non-FAT32, journaling increases unclean-unplug FTL corruption risks of already-buggy logic, etc. I wonder if anyone ever seriously engineered or reverse-engineered one of those to see what exactly went wrong in the firmware?

If the naive pip install doesn't work, you'll have to deal with a number of troubleshooting tickets. :woozy_baa: Otherwise if I'm free to make the decision, I'll just use CMake (pre-existing in the project root) to build Python packages, because one build system headache per project is better than two.

The build process of Python's pip was an endless source of drama. The original implementation used out-of-tree builds, copying the working directory to /tmp to build. This caused many bugs and breakages over the years. If the project's setup.py depends on sibling directories in the project root, such as ../.git by setuptools_scm or relative paths ../lib2 for includes, they're all missing from the working directory in tmp, thus breaking. So after discussions, developers decided to use in-tree builds instead. Now temporary files are littered across the source code, allowing side-effects to break linters, rebuilds, and read-only repositories. So the problem turned out to be unfixable. Worse, because pip is only a front-end and the back-end is in theory arbitrary, it has no idea about how to clean them up. Some managers like uv and pdm allow you to define a PROJECT_ROOT to fix both cases, but pip developers won't accept it unless there's consensus for a new PEP.

#FreeBSD build/pkg server is having a serious outage for about a week already... A ton of packages disappeared entirely from the repo because of failed build jobs. Not only making them uninstallable, running a regular system upgrade with pkg may delete existing versions from your system. Nerd-snipping of the day - a sharp programmer on a Chinese forum noticed an extremely obscure fact about K&R - its Courier font is unusual and doesn't seems to match any of the modern or common versions of Courier we know today. So now I find myself hunting for technical references of that Autologic APS-5 machine used by K&R. #retrocomputing #unix
