Oh I 100% agree that fossil fuels are THE problem and have been the primary driver of inflation and wars since before I was born. But it's also a huge revenue source for both Alberta and Canada in general (we need the $$$), and he has to walk a fine line to avoid stoking further western alienation. Perhaps he just feels "now isn't the time" and that there are more pressing matters, I don't think he's wrong but it's certainly disappointing. Can only fight so many battles/fronts.

I think Carney is for sure more conservative than your average Liberal, especially being a banker, he knows how the "system" works and the risks of deviating into fiscally unsustainable fantasy scenarios, unlike his predecessor. He has worked with a broad group of people with broadly disparate views, generally successfully. I believe he cares about climate change and other prog. issues but is first making sure we can pay the rent. Probably wise.

My probably ill-informed take, but I think you're seeing the "Progressive" part of the old federal "Progressive Conservative" party shift to the Liberals, the Conservative Party essentially becoming the old Reform Party. So the Liberals are now centre/centre-right, the Conservatives are hard-right, and the NDP seemingly back to their roots with Lewis. Many fmr fed PCs have been uncomfortable w CPC for a long time, I think this is probably overall healthy for #CDNPoli -clear choices

I agree with Michael Geist's criticism though largely. It was weird to remind everyone about it then cancel it.. it would have been smarter to just kick the can down to road and make it part of the negotiations, instead of ending up as a condition for negotiations. I suspect there is method to the madness but I'll hold back judgment until a deal is reached, I think then we'll know better. Still, we absolutely need to diversify and I wish we could join the EU..

100% but we have 7% unemployment and we need to get folks back to work while we diversify, it won't happen overnight. Paying EI and social benefits instead of people working and paying taxes only undermines the resources to get the objective accomplished. I don't think Carney is perfect but I think he's being pragmatic.

Is that why Russia invaded or destabilized Chechnya, Georgia, and Moldova too? Lots of Nazis and biolabs and NATO expansion there also? You must think Mastodon users are as dumb as Facebook/Twitter folks. And weird that as a "socialist" you'd take the side of one of the most reactionary regimes we've had in a long time that funds far right European parties like AfD. Besides, countries ask to join NATO (sometimes beg) not the case when "joining" Russia/USSR.

Hard to say, speculation is that he'll get the ones previously committed to for the NORAD role where US integration is a given, and purchase Gripens or SK fighters for NATO roles. That makes good sense, honestly. We'd be fucked worse with Pierre Derriere, if that makes you feel any better.

It might be knowledge of history. Israel begrudgingly accepted the UN partition plan for Palestine post WW2 creating two states that hopefully would co-exist. The "Palestinians" did not. Both have reasonable historical claims to the land (ask yourself what is underneath the Dome). The Arabs invaded, and lost. It's complex but no side has clean hands and to only blame Israel is ridiculous. The Arabs/Palestinians have consistently been the ones to restart the cycle of violence.

"Resistance" through mass murder isn't really showing yourself to be any better than your enemy, it undermines your cause. And as for colonialism, whose mosque is built ON TOP of whose temple? There needs to be a just peace, genocide on both sides must stop.
