I mean like, once again I'm just talking out of my ass here instead of actually writing code, but as a place to start...
so this is pretty much what I was thinking would be the way to do what I'm describing. like, organize around working on a large and substantial project that would be useful to CL as a whole, maybe something like a new implementation or a fork of an existing one which frankly there might be more of a need/demand for since SBCL is getting LLM slop in it, and with all the progress SICL has made over the years I'd imagine it's gotten a lot easier since the time SBCL was written to implement CL. I know @npub14gt…xth6 already forked SBCL but as far as I know there are no plans by anyone other than for it to be a maintenance fork. but anyways, yeah have the project like a CL implementation/fork of an existing one be run in like an explicitly collective sort of way with actual governance, have a standardized process for writing extensions (and require actual documentation) that other implementations already do anyways in an ad hoc sorta way that then later gets papered over by compatibility libraries, then you have a route for people to contribute with easier things like e.g. checking off RFC implementations that would be useful for the implementation and CL as a whole but that aren't just random people making hobby projects 15 years ago that sorta work well enough but that no one bothers to document and maintain and potentially improve.

it's not new for sure, I feel like it's gotten worse over the years I've been using CL though because we keep getting further and further away from any living practice of people using the language for anything (i.e. back when the lisp industry collapsed in the 90s) combined with the overall problems with the tech industry. LLMs in particular have accelerated all this seemingly where previously there was already a lot of superficial engagement with lisp from people who have read Paul Graham et al. talking about how it's the most advanced and powerful language ever and then not really doing much with it other than making like a couple hobbyist projects that aren't very good examples of lisp programming but also work well enough because CL is just a good enough language that you can manage to write something that works with not too much effort that implements something other languages have with less effort and code and man-hours.
admittedly though I have different motivations because I don't have a background in CS or even as a working programmer and just happen to be someone who mainly works in IT and sysadmin but knows programming and has spent years learning CL in depth purely out of intellectual curiosity, for fun, and to write software that I would like to exist. so I think more than most about these meta problems with like the culture and community and how I would like for there to be more of a coherent organized CL community of some kind to implement hard and boring things that the language really needs (either with its libraries or CL implementations themselves).
I've ended up accidentally getting a lot of transfems into CL just by talking about it a lot because I think it's cool and have sometimes speculated on trying to basically netsplit from the "community" and have some kind of transfem led collective of some sort writing useful CL software sorta like what Lix has been doing with Nix (by my reckoning at least looking at it from a distance). but as I said before I'm just a girl with various thoughts that don't have much code to back it up with so I don't feel like an individual who could make a convincing case lol.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately myself as a lurker who hasn't yet finished any projects that I feel like releasing out into the world (getting there though). I've watched the "lisp community" degenerate slowly over the past five years to the point of it basically being a Potemkin village of various unmaintained and undocumented libraries that happen to work well enough because CL hasn't changed in 30 years, and that otherwise is like, a bunch of random dudes making projects that vary widely in terms of how interesting or useful they are. it's something I've wanted to write something up about but I figure I should at least finish my CL blogging stack I've been working on so I'm not just shouting into the void about a programming language community (or lack thereof) without even having contributed any code myself.

I think of this as being an instance of a much broader societal problem of people not being proactive about organizing themselves, or taking it very seriously in general, and viewing such questions as being inconvenient politics that no one wants to deal with. there is a prevailing individualistic mentality that formed the foundations of the early F/OSS movement(s) where everyone is simply making software for themselves and releasing it out into the world if anyone else finds it useful, which in such a context where everyone knows how to program and is engaged with the software on that basis is all well and good, but that's no longer the world we live in.
I don't think it's any better to foist the responsibility of organizing onto a bunch of unpaid developers either though, and this is another broader problem of free software people seemingly not caring about or listening to their users very much but chasing after a hypothetical market share that can only be acquired by copying whatever corporate software looks like. there's been this ever widening gap between the users of the software and the people who write it, and increasingly many users have very little technical competence despite computers being far more ubiquitous than they were when Linux was first released.

the problem is that FOSS has never had any serious political commitments that could have prepared it to resist shit like this. computer touchers only think in terms of the technical merits of something without thinking in terms of the bigger picture of what the political implications are of letting corporate interests have more of an influence over projects by allowing them to contribute code, and the only thing that FOSS added to this was using licenses that these corporations will ignore anyways if they care to since they have far more resources than the FSF to win in court cases.

I've been following the war actively and so far this is where we're at as far as I can tell from being some layperson with special interests in geopolitics and war:
Iran's modern history is that of a country that after WWII had a short-lived democratically elected government that tried to nationalize its oil industry. this pissed off the west and they installed the Shah as dictator (they are now currently trying to whitewash his son as the democratic choice for Iran), who was so unpopular that when the Iranian Revolution happened in 1979 it had 10% of the population participating. Iran is a powerful modern country and one of the oldest civilizations in the world, and the west has been sneeding ever since that they failed to subjugate Iran to western colonial interests.
fast-forward to last year: the US and Israel waged an illegal, unprovoked war of aggression in June with the same pretext that was used for the Iraq War in 2003 on supposed WMDs that don't exist. this is because Iran is a key strategic ally in the middle east with Russia and China that supplies a lot of oil to China especially and is the most powerful Islamic state in the middle east resisting western imperialism. if they topple Iran, the destabilization of the middle east will become that much more of a done deal, and will be one step towards encircling China and Russia, which is their stated plan going back to 2009 in a paper called "Which Path to Persia?" published by the Brookings Institute, a think tank funded by all the usual unelected corporate deep state oligarchs.
once again being attacked in an illegal and unprovoked war of aggression, Iran knows that it's now or never. they're either going to survive this war or the US and Israel will topple their regime to replace it with a puppet state or leave it in a state of perpetual civil war as happened in Libya. after the 12 Day War last year in June, Iran began preparing for war; they have a chain of command in place called the "mosaic defense" which is essentially the "networked insurrection" John Robb talks about in Brave New War but on the level of a nation state instead of just lightly armed guerrillas. Iran is designed to function without central command if necessary and has a decentralized command structure of various lower level officers who all have orders to carry out independently, which is why the decapitation strikes that took out Khamenei didn't stop them from retaliating to defend themselves.
their strategy of attacking every US base and ally in the region is designed to essentially cause as much chaos as possible and wage economic warfare by targeting Gulf State oil refineries because this will have a ripple effect for the global economy and force the world into paying attention to what's happening as well as put pressure on the US to withdraw or dig a deeper hole for itself. they have been doing this using asymmetrical warfare that again is like that of insurgents: using relatively cheap drones to attack miles and miles of oil infrastructure that is impossible to defend and orders of magnitude more expensive to lose than the investment Iran is putting into their attacks. the same is true for all the interceptor missiles the US and Israel have gone through, which are technologically sophisticated devices that can't be easily and quickly replaced by my understanding. Iran is hoping to outlast the barrage of bombings long enough that the only option is for a ground invasion, because if things get to that point the US is going to be in another quagmire forever war on top of all the problems it currently is experiencing domestically as its empire continues to fracture.

legitimately the only hope that people in the US have right now who aren't white and cis is that the empire overextends itself so much that it causes its own collapse. there are no institutions who are meaningfully opposed to what the Trump administration has been doing, and lord knows there is nothing close to a serious organized left that is capable of fighting back against any of this.
I don't think every nonwestern country is a heckin smol bean or something but multipolarism is the only thing standing in the way of the literal New World Order that the United States is actively working towards. this has been their entire geopolitical strategy since the end of the Cold War. they want to have no competing powers; they want every other country to be a puppet of the US empire, a client state of empire, a junior partner in empire, or a degraded third world shithole that is incapable of challenging US hegemony.
they have repeatedly stated that this is their plan. this is why Maduro was kidnapped, and this is why the Iran war is happening. if Iran falls, the US will have gotten that much closer to encircling Russia and China, and their next target will be war with China.

thanks, yeah I would like at some point to write a more thorough piece specifically focused on things I think could be done to improve fedi (esp ideas I've had that are more technical) but this was already long and bordering on disjointed rambling. I have a more nuanced stance on these things than being pro- or anti- and wouldn't necessarily describe myself as ideologically a radfem, because radical feminism is a dead ideology of the past that had lots of issues that should be ruthlessly critiqued just as much as the good parts of it should be shamelessly expropriated
