A hosting service for friends that went wrong, now six data centres in three countries with hundreds of gigabits. We're really good at managing Linux servers, be they virtual, real or a Raspberry Pi cloud.

Friday is Floofday where we celebrate the purpose of the internet - sharing cat pictures.

Broken DNS to start your Monday morning? Seems like quite a few Ubuntu systems weren't ready for yesterday's DNSSEC root key rollover. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/systemd/+bug/2170538

The Nominet DNS fund closes for applications on Monday. If your open source project either does or is in the dependency chain for DNS, grants of up to £100k are available. https://nominet.uk/our-impact/nominet-dns-fund/

Just had to add some prefix filters to our routing setup to support the ADSL/VDSL/Dial-up network at #EMFcamp
Just in case wifi, ethernet, DECT, 2G are too advanced for you there is *dial-up* in this field..

ah. We started in 2000 and are still run by the founding team which is significantly more than a few years. Will lots of years do?

We recently became Accredited .ie Registrars and the first part of our .ie integration is now live. Transfer your .ie domains to us and enjoy our refreshingly boring pricing. https://www.mythic-beasts.com/blog/2025/11/14/ie-domains/

There's a tiny possibility we might have some engineering nerds on our team because the live stream of the 245 tone steel dome being put on Hinkley Point C appears to be impacting productivity this morning. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GT-nRChS-Gw

#IPv6 usage in the UK now over 50% according to Google. Still someway behind Germany (75%) and France (84%) but to out of context quote Jon Bon Jovi, "woah oh, we're half way there'.

We've been sponsoring the @npub1p2p…hjzg with donated servers to assist them in campaigning for digital rights, most notably the ability to encrypt your data and keep it secure. https://www.mythic-beasts.com/blog/2025/02/25/supporting-the-open-rights-group/

we do. We run instances for multiple organisations including @npub1sv0…rq9x, @npub1zps…43k4. We'll install Mastodon on a virtual server and keep everything up to date for you. sales@mythic-beasts.com

We went to the #IPv6 council meeting in the UK. In a change from previous years there was a lot from networks which mostly run IPv6 with IPv4 now increasingly being a legacy compatibility option. https://www.mythic-beasts.com/blog/2024/11/26/ipv6-networking-in-the-uk/

The best compliments are the ones the customers write themselves of their own free will on their own websites.
"Not only has this cut my monthly bill in half, but I’ve so far been impressed with the service, the support, and the general ease with getting everything set up."

just as a pub should have a webpage. The page page holds the useful information (opening times, menu) and embeds the fediverse feed in news. That way timely information flows through the fediverse - changes to times / menus / offers / special nights and so on. You can be informative and cross promote other organisations (runners / knitters / board gamers etc.) that use your pub - after all a pub is a social venture in it's own right!

as I said, I think your model is too simple. The router had a route from BGP had a valid next hop that was pingable from the router. I didn't check the source address used by the router - it's quite possible that the behaviour is source address specific (e.g. the address on the exchange works) amongst many other explanations I haven't thought of.

I think your model of what is going on may be a lot too simple. It appears the black hole is beyond the exchanges and therefore not detectable by BGP as the next hop is valid and responding.

Our best guess is a misconfiguration within Gigaclear at their LONAP v6 routerserver peering. We've helped other large eyeball ISPs track similar things before over exchange route servers.

ping across the exchange direct between the routers.

a route server has that behaviour as the control plane route doesn’t match the data plane. However I can confirm the data path works.
