everyone _CAN_ currently commit and make changes to a local clone of the kernel source code.
Whether their patches are approved is up to existing developers of the Linux kernel project.

I think all of that works against the strong reason open source has seen the success it has, which is its anarchistic nature.
Centralizing all projects under one roof seems like a good idea until that roof falls down.

absolutely. A percentage of the Gimp users would lend time to code-review.
The problem we are also facing is that most people don't want to lend their eyes for free, even if the software is free.
But that issue is a whole other ball of wax.

We could theoretically use machine learning tools to examine open source code-bases in order to detect intentional tampering done by potential bad actors.
That could be kind of interesting. You gotta figure "bad actors" have certain signatures, and might help flush out malicious saboteur accounts.
Just a thought.

I much prefer 'smoking' a pipe. Its less about bringing anything into my lungs, and getting whatever nicotine from the smoke in my mouth.
I did vape for a long while, but I was really tired of my mouth feeling coated with syrup from the vape juice.

one need only understand and accept their own ignorance, and the fact that many others are equally ignorant, and everyone is ignorant in their own ways.
Once we can get past that, we can do anything.

the incentive is walkable living and tighter knit communities with enough room for the people to breathe.
There isn't really profit in it, other than it would reduce the costs of maintaining a population.
Spread out, connected by rails, we could step away from cars for the most part. Not something likely to happen, as long as oil companies can continue to pump and sell oil.
Working together, we could probably build out these cities in far less time.
As long as we're still in a profit driven world with capitalists at the helm, though, this will not happen.
It is definitely wishful thinking, and something like this won't ever happen without that kind of thinking.
As for unlikely to happen because tech talent is on the coasts, tech talent is only on the coasts because that's where the tech campuses are, presently, and we hold the idea that there should be tech campuses, which is silly as most of the work related to tech can be done remotely.
In the vision I have, there might be industrial campuses of some sort, for tech and everything else, located between cities, with rails to take people there for work or whatever.
The cities themselves would be designed with an emphasis on living, community, and leisure.
