During my survey of whether LLMs were right when they say that Microsoft has changed and is no longer an Evil Empire, 1% said they had changed and a few attacked my survey.
The survey was really about asking people in the know, because I believe there are more knowledgeable people here about things Tech, then in most other places.
Anyways, for those of you that think the Microsoft has changed, how do you defend this?
- Windows Recall.
- Setting Edge as default when updating Windows.
- Edge cloning history from your default browser continuously.
- Requiring online login to set up Windows.
- Pushing Onedrive to the extent that people use it without realizing it, meaning they upload data without knowing it.
- User profiling on Windows for ad purposes.
This is just a small subset of what I believe they are doing which is IMHO wrong.
Does Microsoft investing in Open Source mean that everything else they do is OK or is their investment just similar to what they did with the original Embrace, Extend, Extinguish?
BTW, I remember having exactly the same discussion then about whether Microsoft had changed as some people believed they had. It just took them a while to realize that there were multiple steps to the strategy.

My survey showed that 99% of you do not agree with the LLMs when they say that Microsoft has changed their ways and are no longer an Evil Empire.
The question is also then how the LLMs all come up with a very similar, but wrong text? LLMs are not intelligent. They just repeat the prevailing Truth and this means they can easily be manipulated in the same way SEO is used to manipulate search rankings. Anyone looking at search results knows how badly that is working and the risk is that the all knowing LLMs are and will be manipulated in the same way.
I think this matters a lot as more and more are looking at LLMs as some infallible source of information. We struggle enough with misinformation on the Web, that is pushed by the content algorithms on social media. LLMs have the potential to be an even worse source of crucial information than those content algorithms.

One of the special functions we have in @nprofile…60xv is single key keyboard shortcuts. Off by default, this allows you to bind just about any key to a function. My personal favorites are Z and X for going back and forth in history and 9 and 0 to zoom.
Why we have it? It is all about speed of operation and accessibility.
We had this in Opera as well. I think I even implemented the first version myself.
We got great feedback from users that used this extensively, including users using this for accessibility.

At Opera we built, IMHO, the best browser engine, Presto. It was built from scratch. It aced all the tests. It was lean and fast and could run on just about any hardware. It could even run on hardware where there was not enough memory to keep a full web page in memory, which is how it was able to run on things like mobile phones, game consoles, such as the Nintendo DS and Wii, and TVs. We even made it run effectively on servers, which is how we made Opera Mini. We did that with a relatively small team. It had grown to 100 by the time I left and needed to keep growing by about 10% pr year, at my estimate.
After I left, the idiots running Opera at that time decided to kill Presto and go for Webkit and Chromium. Microsoft made the same move.
When we founded @nprofile…60xv , we knew that building a browser from scratch is not trivial and we had to do the same as Apple, Google and Microsoft and build on available source. We choose the best one available to us.
We know how to build a browser. Likely better than most as we have been doing this for more than 30 years.
A strong Vivaldi can and will influence the Web in a positive way, like we did with Opera. If you want a better Web, supporting Vivaldi is one of the best ways to achieve that.

I am continuing to test different Linux distros. So far I have tested Ubuntu, Kubuntu, OpenSUSE and Zorin during this round of testing.
I have tested on Thinkpad P14S and a Zephyrus G14. Relatively powerful machines.
Thinking about how I would have improved things. That is an automatic for me for most everything.

Here is the point. Unlike most that have an opinion on this, I have actually built a browser from scratch. Did that with Opera. Realistically we could not do that today. Would require too much resources and take too long. Then we would have to deal with compatibility issues.
There are really only two other alternatives when it comes to code. Use Webkit or Gecko. That would be a larger risk and we would not be any less reliant on Apple or Google.
The way for us to have the most impact is to continue to build based on Chromium. Over time we will be able to have a bigger impact as well.

In April 1994 I started working on the Opera browser with Geir Iversøy, my co-founder. I worked at Opera for 17 years, leaving it after disagreeing with investors about the way forward. Two years later I co-founded @nprofile…60xv with Tatsuki Tomita and Anne Stavnes. This was in 2013.
For more than 30 years we have provided alternatives to Big Tech. First with Opera and now with Vivaldi. The focus has always been quite different from our competitors. More features, more privacy, more flexibility. Lately it has also meant the choice to avoid things like Crypto and Blockchain, avoid integrating AI and avoid integrating surveillance. This is not given. Most of our competitors are building in one or more of the above.

There is no better feeling than the satisfaction of seeing happy users of Vivaldi. There is a reason why I and the rest of the Vivaldi team continue to work hard on building a better browser for all of you!
It is not always easy. Building a browser across platforms and devices is not trivial to do. Connecting them all together through sync s not trivial either. Making it work well on small and large screens, using different input methods takes a lot of work as well. Having unlimited flexibility is hard as well. This is the reason why others tend not to do it. It is a lot easier to just say that the way you design it is the right way and the user is wrong.
I know there are then things that some of you would like us to do, that we have not done yet. Generally we have it on our list.
Running on a different code base is not on our list, though. It is too much work for too little gain. It is better for us to spend resources on improving the one code base we have. The more resources we have, the more we can do. When you tell your friends about Vivaldi, you help us grow and you help us be able to do more.

32 years ago I started working on my first browser, Opera. I left Opera in 2011, but two years later I co-founded Vivaldi. Thus I have been making browsers now for 32 years, with a short break there between 2011 and 2013.

New @nprofile…60xv release on mobile. Finally we have 2 level tab stacks on iOS and we are putting significant efforts into desktop mode on Android. I am very excited about that. The idea that you can just connect your phone to a dock with keyboard, screen and mouse and have a fully working computer is great! Not just a mirror, but a full desktop environment. This has been around for a while on Samsung phones through DEX, but is now coming to Android in general and we see this as an interesting challenge to bring a true desktop experience to this environment. Obviously having things like tabs, tab stacks and panels gives us a head start, but we will continue to work on this.

We do not do telemetry at Vivaldi. I believe in listening to our users. I know some do not agree. They think that they know better and that design is best left to designers or telemetry. That is how we, IMHO, end up with sub-optimal products.
Design is hard. You want things to look good and you want it to function well. The issue is that we also have different requirements and wishes. Some are not negotiable even.
At Vivaldi we have tried to provide a lot of options, so people can get it their way. We did it again with the latest release where we added new functionality for tailoring the browser to your needs with auto hide and follow er tab. Not everyone will use that, but some will and they will love it.

I think the current state of affairs makes it even clearer that we need to move to EVs, hydro power, wind and solar and we need to move at speed. In Norway, EV sales are more than 95%, but Iceland is still behind. For countries like Norway and Iceland that produce more electricity than they use, this is clear and others should try to do the same. Dependency on oil and gas continues to be a problem.
Norway is at this time a big oil producer as well and although I want us to move off oil, it is good at this time that Norway can contribute to solving the current lack of oil and gas.

We are always trying to make @nprofile…60xv better and our latest release is another example of that. This time our focus was on hiding the UI. Why we do that? Because some of you have been requesting a minimal UI and that is what we have now delivered, but with the UI always close and also fully under your control. Try it out and you will understand! It can be accessed from a button in the status bar or through CTRL F11. Hint : Try associating it with fullscreen (F11), for an even better experience! There is a setting for that, of course.
Another function we added is follow tab. Tie together two tabs side by side. Click a link on the left side and view it on the right side. Great for going through search results without having to go back and forth or viewing images or the like.

@nprofile…9vwg , I think moving away from Chromium is not an option at this time. Having made a browser from scratch before, Opera, I know what it takes to build a browser from scratch and there is a reason companies like Apple, Google and Microsoft have not done it.
I think there is great value in us growing and being able to contribute more to the Chromium project. I think that can make a significant difference.

This is great news.
In Iceland and Norway we have been fortunate enough to have plenty of hydro power, so use of oil has been mostly related to cars and ships. Both countries have taking large steps towards EVs, with sales of EVs at 95% in Norway at this time.
The goal should be to be as independent from oil as we can be.

I recently got a new Thinkpad P14S. It is a nice computer for sure, but I think it is time to focus on the software side as well. Computers come with software and the software experience matters!
Some things I think should be covered in a review:
1. What OS does the machine come with? Having a choice would be nice, such as a Windows & Linux choice. Even better if you can test both before making a choice.
2. What software does the machine come with, both good and bad. If the machine comes with useful software, then that is great! Does it offer a choice of browsers?
3. Is it possible to get rid of all the bad stuff and how long does it take?
4. Does the machine allow local accounts? Does it force or trick you into using online services?
5. Does the machine have opt-in or opt-out of AI or does it force feed it?
6. Does the machine make it easy to switch OS after the fact?
I am sure I am not the only one that cares about stuff like this. When you buy a piece of hardware, it is to run software and making it easy to run the software you want should be what hardware makes should focus on, in addition to building great hardware.

The focus for us at @nprofile…7m8a has always been to do what our users want us to do. So we have spent time on things like:

- Cross platform, encrypted sync function
- Advanced bookmarking function with speed dials
- Customizable dashboard
- Massive customization options in general.

We have also added stuff like this in our desktop browser

- Proton VPN integration
Not everyone uses everything we make, but that is also the point. The fact that we listen to special requests is IMHO a feature and not a bug. We value power users as well.
On the other hand, we have stayed away from certain things. Things like:

- AI
You can find us on Windows, MacOS, Linux, Android and iOS. You can even find us in many cars running Android Automotive.

This is an example of how far the surveillance capitalism has gone. IMHO there is no logic to your TV monitoring what you are watching. It is time for some serious legislation when it comes to what data can be collected and what it can be used for. IMHO companies should not be building profiles on their users.

Sounds like a good idea.
Clearly there is a good match between Vivaldi and Linux, which is visible in our own stats as well. We have a higher market share on Linux than on other platforms.
Those that have chosen Linux have made a deliberate choice. Linux does not normally come with your computer. Same applies to Vivaldi.

Why is Big Tech so afraid of AI regulation?
Big Tech continues to push for no AI regulation and it is having an impact. They want us to forget the damage done by the lack of regulation of user profiling. Instead they argue that regulating user profiling and AI would be a disaster. Clearly they are having some success with this strategy.

I just rented a car a couple of days ago. The car I got is a Toyota BZ4X. As I drove from the airport with a couple of friends, the car started beeping at times. It was complaining whenever I exceeded the speed limit by 3 km/h or if I held the steering wheel in such a way that it could not see my face. The beeping was constant unless I lowered the speed and changed how I held the wheel.
I tried to find a way to turn off the noise, with help from my friends, but the settings were not in the main display. Later I found the settings to turn this off, but it was in the dashboard only and it used acronyms and required pretty advanced interactions to find the settings and edit them (hold down the OK button for a longer time to see the menus that allow you to edit the settings).
I guess this is a great example of a really, really bad UI.

Microsoft is killing Windows 10 and for many countries and users, updates will stop today. It is time to look for options.
@nprofile…aftj, has a suggestion for you. IMHO there are many Linux distributions to choose between and you will need to choose the one that works best for you.
I recently switched to Linux as my primary platform myself.
My plea, however, to the Linux community is to make it easy for people to switch to Linux, but also to make it easy to switch window managers, key chains and the like.
I switched to Ubuntu myself and I am finding certain things with Gnome were a pain. Thus I tried switching to KDE, but found that broke a lot of things. IMHO we should strive to make it easy for users to switch between window managers and desktops as well as applications, without breaking things. That requires the different players to work together to ensure that switching from one desktop to another, for example, does not need to mean loosing passwords.
Locking in is one of the things Big Tech is known for. Linux should not have that, IMHO.

New @nprofile…x9jw update out now on Android and iOS. The iOS version has some really nice, new features, such as reader mode and custom search engines. Those were in high demand, so happy they are there.
The Android release has less visible changes as it required a lot of work on the Chromium update this time. More features next time.

I do believe AI has its use, but what we are seeing on the Internet is not that use at all. Rather the opposite.

This is a great example of something being pushed that most really do not want.

Great little video by John Oliver about AI. One thing he did not get, however, is that also the comments are likely AI generated...
Now you can have a discussion about the usefulness of AI for all kinds of stuff, but to me is is disgusting that Meta is deciding to feed their users this stuff. When it comes to social media, I would think that most people are interested in what their friends have to say or what people they follow have to say. AI generated content is not that.

If you think it is time to move away from your Outlook mail account, this is the best way to do so, IMHO:
1. Set up a mail client. By using a mail client, you can work with multiple mail accounts and gradually move your communication from one account to another, while retaining your mail history locally. Personally I use Vivaldi this way, but there are other mail clients as well.
2. Select a new mail service. Good choices include Proton Mail and Fastmail.

I have led a team building a browser engine. The only team that has done that successfully the last 30 years or so. It is not trivial, which is why Apple, Google, Microsoft and others did not do it.
BTW, Chromium is based on Webkit, that is based on KHTML. The project was built in the same building as Opera in Oslo.

Every browser out there uses a browser engine as base that they did not write them selves from scratch. The exception was Opera, when I was CEO there, but now they use Chromium as well.
A browser is more than the engine. There is a lot of UI around it and that is what the user engages with. We also change the engine a lot, with more than 2000 files modified. We also add a mail client, calendar, feed reader and a lot more.

@nprofile…ngc9 , I would not say that you need solar panels. Based on my usage, it is a lot cheaper to charge at home instead of filling up the gas tank. It is not even close. Maintenance cost for the vehicles is also a lot lower in general.
Havin solar is, of course, great, but I do not see it as a requirement for having an EV.

Hopefully we will see a lot more chargers as more and more start using EVs.

I believe we are all vulnerable to misinformation. The first group was really people on Facebook and in particular men over 50.
I also do not think that Google is a reliable source for information and even less with more AI use. The most reliable source of information may depend on your country. In the Nordics, I would trust the government and government media, but I also understand that that can be an unreliable source in many countries.
Then you are left with the more mainstream media, again depending on your country.
What clearly does not work is algorithmic content selection. I think we should know that by now. This is one of the reason why we include an RSS reader in Vivaldi.

So why is Microsoft insisting on pushing out a feature it is very clear users just do not want? What is the point of it? It just does not make any sense. Recall makes no sense. It is one of rather many functions that Microsoft wants to force people into using.
Personally I also do not want Copilot on my computer and the idea that there can be a key on my keyboard that I can press that will enable by mistake it is not what I would think most people want.
I believe that there should be a very clear line between what is on your computer and what is in the cloud. Forcing people to log into a Microsoft online account to use their computer is crazy. Having people mistakenly enabling OneDrive is another disaster.
I guess this is all a great opportunity for Linux.

We are already getting green energy from our power company, so we do not need our own energy production. All of Iceland´s power generation is hydro and a little bit of geo thermal.
The power grid in Iceland tends to be quite stable. Downtime is rare. We do, of course, have backups, but I do not think we have ever had to use them.

Unlike most others, we have made certain choices at Vivaldi that IMHO are important in this time and age. We believe the choices were important when we made them, but even more so today.
Our servers are in Iceland and they are our servers and not some cloud servers. We use them for all Vivaldi services, including things like Sync, Blogs, Forums and Vivaldi Social.
Electricity in Iceland is green. Most all of the power in use is hydro, with a little bit of geo thermal.
We do make use of CDNs for speed, etc., of course.

I prefer a vehicle with a larger battery. Most of the plugin hybrids have a rather short range and the driving experience in an EV is just nicer. That being said, I kind of like the idea of a range extender, although I still prefer to just have a larger battery or otherwise better range.
Most EVs being sold today have a range of at least 200 miles, which for most of my use is plenty.

I have never been a fan of Teslas. I am a fan of EVs, however, and there is just a lot of quality vehicles out there and most of them have a dashboard, which IMHO should be a requirement, as well as normal placement of things like turn signal controls and window wiper controls.
I know some of you just dislike cars in general and I respect that. I love walking and biking as well, but sometimes I need to drive and then I prefer EVs.

The damage that Big Tech has done to news sites and media should not be underestimated.
It used to be that you would buy tech ads on tech media outlets. That was the best way to reach that audience. Now Big Tech makes a profile on you, which notes that you visit tech media sites. That information is then used when selling ads based on your profile.
The only real solution is to ban user profiling and go back to context sensitive ads. I think that kind of ads, as long as they are not using popups and the like, would be more acceptable to the public as well. People just do not like being tracked. Who would have thought?
