Thing is that things going subscription isn't going to affect consumption habits. People didn't stop watching shows or listening to music when these things became largely subscriptions.
I think vast majority of people will just go along with this because they either don't care or don't understand the long term implications of losing ownership.

@npub1k9a…m3yh for local stuff nix is actually worth looking at. It does two things really well. You can install a set of packages and then roll back to a previous state if you want to. The other is being able to install packages within a context.
Like say you need python 2 for one app and python 3 for another. Nix will let you set your environment based on a directory.
