Attempting to avoid spoilers for Silo and Peacemaker but 🤷, so don’t read further if you’re concerned.
Some shows debut new seasons that undo a big chunk of what was accomplished in the previous season. This is when I check out of the show. #silo and #peacemaker are both shows I thought were great that did this recently. I didn’t make it past episode 1 of the newest season of either one.

I scheduled an appointment to try out the Apple Vision Pro back when that was a thing. At the Apple Store the employee scanned my glasses to find a matching set of lenses. She failed to do this. She got someone else to assist who else failed. Then a more senior employee. After about 15 minutes of trying they told me that they don’t know what to do and I will have to reschedule.
There’s nothing unusual about my glasses, other than being a strong prescription, so the experience makes me less than confident about Apple’s glasses plans. I never did get to try an AVP.

Steve Sinofsky loves to recall his visionary genius and claim credit for products coming out today. He fails to mention that the product was an utter failure due to his (as head of Windows) terrible OS decisions. Windows RT being very limited, the disastrous Metro/Modern UI, the forced app store, and the company’s failure to port much of its stack to ARM all led to a bad product that nobody wanted.

There’s a concept that I struggle to explain to people, which is that doing a quick hack that adds a constraint to software has a cost. That cost is hurting future use of that code because its behavior is more complex, has special exceptions that must be understood, dependent on unexpected things. It compounds over multiple hacks until the software is so constrained that making changes is painful or impossible.
Is there a formal name for this? It’s not just technical debt. It’s layers of poorly-conceived hacks that constrain the direction of development in increasingly narrow paths.

I generally pay for quality, but $5000 was more than I am willing to spend on a display. Regardless, it’s discontinued now.
I think I may return this for a (5K) Studio Display, which is more expensive than this 6K LG.

The display itself is matte and does not look as good as the old LG Ultrafine 5K. It looks okay, but black levels are not as good and it’s less crisp despite having the same DPI. When light sources hit it, the matte coating actually makes it worse compared to a glossy display, with indirect light in the room washing it out. I really wish there was a non-matte option.
On the plus side no image retention so far, unlike the 5K.

Thread of things I hate about the LG 6K monitor (32U990A). Updated as I encounter them.
There is no metal on this thing, it is all painted plastic. Gross. Correction, the base of the stand is made of metal. It does not match the painted plastic stand.
The stand is too high. I’ve set my desk as low as possible and my eye level still makes looking at the top of the display a strain.
Controls are via a little joystick on the back of the monitor. It feels very flimsy and cheap and will probably break soon. It is also very awkward to use.
macOS software audio controls do not work with this monitor. The volume output is at a fixed volume (digital “line” level), and the monitor expects to adjust the volume using the above flimsy joystick. This is very bad.
The speakers are terrible. I expected this.

I remember the VoiceOver work on iPod. It was a large effort, and they put the lead UI engineer on it for quite a while. This was back when the iPod was Apple’s biggest product.
This was under Jobs, btw. Steve ingrained accessibility into the company.

Running a complex task with an AI agent is insane because it will do things differently every time.
Run 1: looks at environment variable for data it needs, works.
Run 2: tries to get same data by running utility that fails, dies.
This run decides it needs to edit .zshenv for some reason. It didn’t do it last time. It probably won’t next time.
This thing runs thousands of steps and every one of them is potentially like this. You can’t fix a thing and assume it will work.

The goal was to make something secure by default. POSIX is incompatible with the fuchsia security model (and syscall model), so yes, rewrite all of userland.
Several years later, they are now maintaining a unix compatibility runtime as a key component.

Well, the joke was that Fuchsia was a retirement home for frustrated Android engineers. They were doing the opposite of Android in every way to fix all the fundamental problems with the first OS. What they ended up with was essentially a meta-OS that could theoretically do anything but in practice did nothing.
The kernel (zircon) is pretty good though and has some good ideas.

They say infinite monkeys banging on infinite typewriters will eventually produce Shakespeare. While true(-ish, ignoring the combinatorial size), it then becomes a problem of searching the output and filtering out good content from bad. This requires intelligence that the monkeys didn’t apply in the writing process.
Given the infinite output set, it’s more difficult than writing it yourself.
AI-generated writing works the same way. Today we specifically see the infinite monkey problem in AI-generated bug reports.

Claude is always remote, it is a huge model. Claude Code is a local harness (Node app) that invokes remote Claude, but performs local file system and network access.

The new world of AI means every project and proposal has a million pages of AI-generated documents that nobody can read. If you want to interface with something, it means parsing their docs and generating a matching set of docs that cross-reference them.
They’ve shifted the burden of software development forward into design. We must specify everything and then implement that spec. It turns software implementation into a design and verification problem. This is the classic outsourcing problem.

The outsourcing problem, summarized. There is a spectrum of development teams: on one side is the self-organizing group of smart people. On the other is the outsourced development team. The former does the right thing for the project. The latter implements a spec. To get good results from the outsourced team, the spec needs to be great, and their work needs to be verified to be consistent with it. Effectively this moves all of the intelligence and effort out of the implementation and into the specification. In general this does not end up saving time or labor, it just makes things more difficult. Fixing design mistakes in particular is extremely painful.

vscode uses homebrew’s python, not the system python. Homebrew’s python can’t be managed with pip, it needs to download packages via ‘brew’. Brew doesn’t contain the package I need that is installed on my system python.
The whole python versioning world is a disaster and everyone involved should feel bad.

I expect Apple will use third party compute services for training and will make their own hardware for inference.
The inference hardware will have something no one else can provide: Apple Secure Enclave-based privacy. If they want to privately process user data in the cloud, no other confidential compute platform is sufficient for this task.

How does one use the apps they purchased on their work Mac? Or play their Apple Music subscription music at work? Use iPhone mirroring or AirPods?
Apple needs two things:
1. Managed iCloud accounts tied into corporate authentication. Allow users to use the App Store apps the company buys, use iMessage, FaceTime, iCloud sync their devices, etc.
2. Delegate a personal account to that managed account. Allow it optional access to things like app store purchases, Apple Music, AirPod sync, maybe messages, but not other things like email and photos.
