The minute that Trump is gone, if a Democrat manages to get into the presidency, I 100% GUARANTEE that we will hear "look forward, not backwards" in unison from every fucking Democrat in office. There will be no trials. No prosecutions. Not even any investigations. ICE will still continue to exist, as will the surveillance state and the death camps. They'll just get a little less coverage in the media, and there will be more decorum in who they send into the camps. Maybe they will try to have the inmates in the death camps be a little more diverse.
That's the most anyone can expect from the Democratic Party. And Democrats who are expecting anything different have a big surprise coming, although no doubt most of them will stick their heads up their asses and pretend that everything is fine now.

My grandmother lived through the Great Depression. Apparently she used to grab all the condiments she could whenever she went out to a restaurant. The family used to joke about it. They said she'd even pour the contents of the sugar bowls into her purse.
Once there was a terrible fire at a nightclub in our area. A huge number of people were burned to death. When we found that there was a silver ladle among my grandmother's stuff with the name of that nightclub on the handle, we used to joke that she pulled it out of the charred and crispy hand of a waiter! 🤣

I fought back two times, but I wasn't any good at all. I tended to go blind, somehow. The beatings finally stopped when I decided that I wasn't going to give a damn any more. I wasn't going to cringe and hide. I told the bullies to go ahead and do whatever they were going to do; I didn't give a shit.
That was in my first year of high school, as I recall. I was never beaten up again.
Well, except by my ex-wife. But that's a different story.

Everyone ostracized me, too. I was beaten up several times a day, every day. Back then teachers didn't do a damned thing about bullies. If I'd had access to a gun, I'd have brought it to school.
I read all the time - in class, by myself during lunch in the cafeteria, and during recess huddled as far out of sight as I could get. But they always got me at recess. Hunting me down was one of the favorite pastimes of the many bullies at my school.
In retrospect, it's amazing that I'm not a lot more damaged than I am!

Math was always hard for me. But what I HATED was gym class. I still remember the gym teacher. She would divide the class into two teams to play against each other, and she ALWAYS put all the good athletes together on one team. The "losers" team always got crushed.
I, of course, was always put on the loser team (I'm the kid who was always picked last when kids were picking who was going to be on their team). One day after we got crushed by the good athletes, the gym teacher started yelling at us for being so bad at sports.
I lost my temper.
"Of COURSE the score is always lopsided!" I screamed. "You always put all the GOOD athletes on one team!"
"Oh, and you think *you* could do better?" she sneered.
"Yes!" I answered.
For some reason she decided to show me up. She told me to divide the class into teams. So I did, as fairly as I could. Then we played a game between the two teams.
The final score differed by ONE point between the two teams.
She never said a damned word to me again.
Gym teachers are scum.

I want to try to grow a few things this spring. But I have no experience.
I have a small back yard with rabbits, chipmunks, squirrels, and birds. I'd like to grow cherry tomatoes and maybe potatoes. I'm thinking maybe in a couple of wooden half-barrels with chicken wire over the tops.
Should I put a layer of gravel in the bottoms and then cover it with landscaping cloth and topsoil? Should there be a hole in the bottom to let excess water drain out? Will I need stakes for the tomatoes? Should they be heirloom?
And what about the potatoes? Bury them in dirt?

Someone on Reddit asked what was the point of using Mastodon. Of getting no responses. Of going through the hassle of using hashtags.
I replied:
For the community.
I was on Mastodon for years, and nothing happened. Virtually no responses. Then I listened to advice and started using hashtags - both for my own posts, and for searches.
It made a HUGE difference. I found all sorts of interesting posts and people to follow. The culture was *nicer* - people are much more well-behaved and friendly than they are on Reddit or Twitter. Within a month I found myself spending more time and having more satisfaction on Mastodon than I'd had online for decades.
I can't speak for anyone else. But Mastodon is a growing, lively, intelligent community. There's no algorithm, no ads, which is *incredibly* refreshing. And since it's part of the Fediverse it's linked to many other services - such as BookWyrm, which is a great decentralized replacement for GoodReads.
Not to mention that Mastodon isn't owned by some money-grubbing bastard, and never will be - because it's decentralized.
Jeeze. I feel like I'm an escaped slave sneaking back into the old plantation to tell the slaves that life can be better when you're free! 🤣

Fighting the fascists in the streets is starting from a position of weakness. I suspect it's what the regime wants.
A general strike, on the other hand, hits the oligarchs at their weak point: numbers and money. That is, OUR numbers and THEIR (stolen) money. If enough of us stop working for them for even a few weeks, they'll crumble and run. Without a functioning economy, they're nothing.
They'll do anything to stop us from a general strike.
But we can feed and care for each other during the less-than-a-month it would take to win our freedom from them.
Think about how you can help other workers when the time comes. Prepare a little, if you can. Every little bit helps. An extra can of food or a handmade first aid kit put away on a shelf against The Day we take a stand can be a lifesaver when the oligarchs clamp down!

I strongly suspect that the state police (at least in most cases) as well as city police forces will be on the side of ICE and the feds. Not so sure about the national guard. But in the end, it's the people who are going to have to be the deciding factor.

Just because we've lived with money all our lives, doesn't mean we can't live without it. What if the necessities of life or part of the natural right of every human being? What if you could know that you would be able to get a meal whenever you were hungry, shelter whenever you needed it? Would that be so impossible?
The oligarchs take approximately 97% of everything the human race produces. Get rid of the oligarchs, and we are suddenly in a state of such abundance that the painstaking tracking of every bit of food, shelter, water, energy, and communication becomes more of a waste of effort than anyone might want to deal with.

After decades of experience with online dating services, I'm convinced that at this point ALL of them are deliberately making themselves useless. It's logical, by capitalist "logic"; if someone meets a suitable match and falls in love, they're lost as a customer - possibly forever.
So instead the services use sophisticated algorithms to keep good matches dangling just out of reach, teasing users with the possibility of love if they would just pay for premium.
In other words, it's classic enshittification.
So I definitely support the idea of a nonprofit Fediverse-based dating service. I don't have the technical skills to be helpful with that (maybe I should try to learn?), but I'd certainly sign up!

It occurs to me that I should possibly introduce myself in this new year.
I've been on Mastodon since 9/11/2000, but only started using it heavily over the past six months or so. Hashtags made a big improvement to my experience here.
I'm the last of the Boomers, almost literally. But I've been an early adopter when it comes to technology ever since college; I was on the internet back in 1986, and I created my first website in 1996. It's still up.
I'm a hardcore bibliophile. I grew up before the internet, and without much TV; my parents read to me all the time, and I learned to read by around two and a half years old. I've probably read more books than 99.9% of the human race.
When it comes to reading, my favorite genres are science fiction, fantasy, mysteries, humor, books for children and young adults, and books that have entered the public domain. But I'm fairly eclectic. I tend to prefer older books, and did even as a child.
I love to write, but my muse doesn't send me fiction or poetry anywhere NEAR as much as I'd like.
My memory is a bit freakish. I'm not eidetic, but apparently my memory is unusually good - particularly when it comes to books. That's made it easy for me to recommend books to others. Before I left Reddit I accumulated a file of recommendations that I'd made that includes nearly 1,000 books, and I still add to it when I can.
I have a huge amount of experience reading aloud, particularly to children. Not to boast, but it's something I'm very good at.
I love tabletop roleplaying, and have been running campaigns for over 40 years now. The games I run are based on literary worlds or my own imagination. The focus is generally characterization, exploration, and interaction rather than combat.
I'm a supertaster AND hypervigilant, thanks to an abusive upbringing. My senses of smell and taste are incredibly keen, and I tend to notice things more quickly than most. Except my hearing is starting to degrade a bit with age, sadly.
I'm shy and/or demisexual. A straight cis male. I should probably be on display in a museum!
I'm the single father of an adult son who takes after me to a frightening extent, right down to red hair, geekiness, bibliophilia, and atheism.
Lastly I'm an anti-capitalist. Very leftist, or more accurately extremely opposed to the entire political and economic system of capitalism. I grew up with the children of the 0.001%, and really loathe them all - from experience. I know how they think. I stand with working people and immigrants.

They'll wake up when they can't have sex anymore, I suspect. Or not without risking pregnancy.
But even if that doesn't do it, they will DEFINITELY wake up when they and their children start to starve. And that time will come. The elite are too greedy to let the peasants eat.

The problem is that income can always be stolen. But if people have the right to food, shelter, power, and communication (including the internet) as basic human rights, that's not something that can be stolen. They're hungry; they go get food from their community. If a thief wants their food, what's the point? The thief can go get food themselves (they're human too), in which case THEY'RE NOT A THIEF!
And if the purported victim somehow has their food taken, they can always go get more. If someone is grossly abusing their right to food, the community can always meet democratically and decide what to do about it. They can always choose to expel the malefactor from their community; they're free to go elsewhere for their needs.

Universal Income is meaningless if inequality continues to exist. The elite will just increase the price of everything to take every penny of that UI, plus more. The nature of capitalism and the billionaires who control it is to keep every worker on the ragged edge of desperation and starvation.
Our only hope is to wipe out inequality COMPLETELY. No more billionaires. No more rich people AT ALL.

Don't fall into the trap of assuming that everything is because of Trump. We've been stampeding towards fascism for decades, under both parties. Our oligarch overlords want fascism because they fear the people. Pretending that everything will be fine once Trump is gone is completely delusional.
It doesn't matter who's the President, ultimately. What matters are the people BEHIND the politicians: the billionaires and the big corporations.
My fear is that most liberals will simply close their eyes and go back to sleep once Trump is gone. That's what the oligarchs want to happen.
The system is terminal. It all has to go if we want to survive as a species.

What would you do if you didn't have to work for a living, but were expected to use your skills or abilities to contribute towards the social good? For at least a few hours every week?
I can think of a number of things that I'd like to do:
• Cook for others
• Read to children and adults
• Build bookcases and other simple structures
• Teach basic computer skills, spreadsheets, word processing
• Edit and rewrite
• Act
• Run tabletop roleplaying games
...I'm sure there's more, but I'm not entirely used to thinking this way!

I know. It's just that I have no way of knowing what hashtags to use. For example, say I post something about chess. That's not too hard; I'd use the hashtags "chess" and "games", at a guess.
But there are some hashtags which aren't necessarily obvious unless I stumble across them. "OldPeopleOfMastodon", for example; I had no idea that that was a thing!
And what about "BookRecommendations" versus "BookRecommendation"? I guess I could try typing both and see which one has a larger number of recent queries, but that doesn't help me find hashtags which have entered common usage on Mastodon. Is "SuggestMeABook" a thing? "ChildrensLiterature"? I have to imagine hashtags and then search for them in order to find out. That's really not a good approach, because not everybody is going to be able to imagine appropriate hashtags. It seems to me that since hashtags are so important on Mastodon, there should be a searchable grand list of hashtags across the entirety of it, along with frequency of use.
Does that sound crazy?

Does anyone know a way to find out what hashtags are being used on Mastodon? It seems to me that that would be helpful information! Otherwise I just have to guess which hashtags would be best to reach the right audience.
I'm following a bot that lists trending hashtags for the day, but it's for a specific server that's not even mine. And I don't want to chase the topic(s) of the day; I just want to be able to find the RIGHT hashtags to use for my posts!

Have you ever seen the movie of "The Third Man"? Graham Green wrote the screenplay before he wrote the book, as I recall. It's one of the most profound, deeply moving films I've ever seen. The performances and direction are absolutely breathtaking.
