If "Big Pharma" were a single entity pursuing profit with no regard for human life or suffering, it wouldn't be in their best interest to, say, develop effective vaccines. But it's more complicated than that.

I don't think it's that simple, though. Remember that the pharmaceutical industry isn't a single entity, it's a complex system made up of loads of different people with different motives. The people in power are primarily profit driven, but they're also competing against each other. I don't think the "Big Pharma just wants to treat people for life, not cure or prevent disease" model holds up to scrutiny if you look more closely at how the industry behaves.
