But without detailed profiling, there's no reason to expect that this is the end of the story for any of those implementations. When I worked on compressors back in the 1980s I found all kinds of tricks to boost their perf. I suspect I could do the same here.

Hell no. Plain `make` does the job easily for 90% of projects. Rtfm and learn how to use it before you go pushing for the latest flavor of the month.
Joining an existing project requires learning how it already works. You don't get to just jump in and imnediately request every current developer change all of their established procedures to accommodate you. That won't fly, anywhere in the world.

@npub1ua7…rrg3 if you only have file libXX.so.0 then you don't have the -dev package installed. The linker only recognizes .o, .a, and .so suffixes. You need to symlink libSDL2-2.0.so.0 to libSDL2-2.0.so for ld to see it.

Most sci-fi stories involving time travel involve a mechanism that's incredibly rare and/or difficult to operate.
What if complete plans for a working time machine, including its power source, were published anonymously on the web, in a decentralized fashion? (Impossible to identify who published it, or from where, and thus making it impossible to go back and prevent the publication.) It's only April and my PV panels have already hit a peak output over 10% over their rated capacity (yesterday). The power graph from today clearly shows the jump around 9am when the sun is finally in front of the house. The house faces SSW so the panels aren't getting direct illumination from sunrise, though they're still producing a tiny bit of power then.

CDMA lost out to GSM/LTE but one nice thing the CDMA networks did that GSM doesn't - CDMA cell towers included their latitude/longitude coordinates in their tower info. This allowed map apps to coarsely triangulate your location without any other information.
Apps can also triangulate from GSM cell tower IDs, but only by querying a provider's database of tower ID to location info.
With CDMA you could use your maps without Google always knowing where you are...

Anyone have any tips on high speed USB-2 microSD card readers?
I've got cards that read 100MB/sec in a USB-3 reader. They ought to be able to max out USB-2, with at least 50MB/sec, Most that I've found only reach 20MB/sec though.

I'll dwell on sanakirja for a moment because it's one of many projects that got started because its founder asked us for a feature in LMDB that we rejected. https://lists.openldap.org/hyperkitty/list/openldap-devel@openldap.org/thread/6DPSXUDORI5ZIGLA2NKQB6JFKRLIFU3S/ So they figured they could fork our code and build it themselves. Fork / DIY is pretty much how open source is supposed to work, in theory. In practice the results can be pretty uneven. So it goes.

On reads, of course LMDB blows all the other away, as usual. Interestingly, they test with 4, 8, 16, and 32 concurrent reader threads on a Ryzen 5900X CPPU which only has 12 cores / 24 hardware threads.
Again, as expected, the LMDB read rate scales linearly from 1 / 4 / 8 threads, at 556ms / 141ms / 72ms. Essentially perfect scaling. The jump to 16 threads and 47ms isn't linear because the CPU has run out of cores, likewise for 32 threads at 44ms.

We built on top of POSIX because that's what was most available, and generally pretty reliable too.
#OpenLDAP is hyper-efficient today because we analyzed every layer of it, profiled and benchmarked the hell out of it. Memory allocation, concurrency, locking overhead, network and disk I/O, etc. Optimized from the bottom up, because you can't build anything good without a solid foundation.
Could go further into the kernel, network stack etc. Been there/done that, and others are there now.

@npub1hce…c5cz Performance above all; preallocated space is faster than incrementally allocated.
And zero-maintenance is another priority. Easiest is to just set maxsize to "the size of my available storage" and forget about it. If you run out of storage, well, that's a provisioning issue and you would have run into that problem anyway, with incremental allocation.

A reminder: the core principle behind Free Software is that anyone can use it. If you modify it, enhance it, etc., you must give your users the same rights you received.
"Open Source" is one step removed from Public Domain - anyone can do whatever they want with it, with no obligation to share it under the same terms they themselves received it. Open source is a con, perpetrated by greedy corporations on selfless developers.

On page 5 they go on to write "it becomes apparent that LMDB confronts the map size limit, especially for value sizes
around 128 MB." Again this is false, there is no 128MB map size limit in LMDB.
Too bad the #SAE website doesn't provide any feedback mechanism for the papers it charges so much for. A high price to pay for such low quality technical content.

Unfortunately, after paying $40 to download this paper, I found it was rather poorly written with a number of factual errors about LMDB. E.g. on page 3 they write "Furthermore, LMDB supports write-ahead logging
(WAL) for durability and crash recovery." which is emphatically wrong. LMDB is crash-proof but expressly does not use a log. Txn logs are an administrative burden that LMDB has eliminated in its design.

@npub1s8v…qtw7 Kinda agree. But I just recently replaced an all-analog toaster oven with one with digital controls, because the spring-loaded manual timer knob on the old one stopped working. I.e., you turn it to a specific time, hear it ticking as it starts to unwind to zero, and then it just stops dead (but the oven is still on). I'm a huge fan of solid state gear vs gear with moving parts that wear out and fail in the worst possible way.

@npub1cm7…32y8 I envision exposing tagging to userspace using an fcntl on an fd. It could be as simple as fcntl(fd, NEW_GROUP) to define a barrier between write groups. I can't think of a lot of cases where the application needs the group ID and the ability to write to multiple groups at once, so just one group marker at a time should be sufficient.

I saw a recent post about mailman breaking on a recent debian upgrade go by here but didn't pay it much attention. Can't find it now, but - same thing has happened to openldap.org today. We upgraded debian and now all the OpenLDAP mailing lists are dead. Emails sent to the lists are going to /dev/null with no notification to the sender. Aggravating, to say the least.
Looks like it may be mailman and postfix refusing to talk to each other.
