which is to say: the best way to better society isn't about reach (although that certainly warps the information landscape). the way to better society is to give people the ability to organize and the ability to set their own rules. conflict is forced when disagreeing parties are forced to interact; eventually, someone's "will" gets imposed on the "other". the pressure to conform to some norm is one of the worst things about society.

i'm making an argument from human psychology, because negative emotions are stronger and more likely to incite a reaction than positive emotions. we don't have perfectly spherical humans in frictionless environments. an argument toward popularity assumes that popular = good. it isn't. some of the best stuff is niche and even unpopular. you'd get a cultural "tyranny of the majority"-esque situation. i certainly hope i'm not judged by how many followers i accrue or how many boosts i get

i'm skeptical that maximum attention is a measure for value. even if all humans could discover and evaluate universal information in negligible time, you'd still see the wrong things getting attention. it's not purely a distribution problem, and it's not simply perverse incentives, either -- well-meaning people allocate their attention incorrectly all the time.

- atproto requires a DNS name (and the TXT record points to a DID which points to a PDS)
- activitypub requires a URI (which in most cases you just HTTP GET directly, optionally following HTTP redirects)
- you could satisfy both by assigning subdomains or letting users bring their own domain
so alice.social.example and https://alice.social.example could be used ~equivalently, but https:// social.example/alice wouldn't work as an atproto identity.

"microblogging" is more about informality and semi-ephemerality, which comes from self-imposed length and formatting limits. the "boost" isn't unique to microblogging, and you don't need activitypub for that either. people share things all the time without activitypub. you could share *anything* with a link if only your software would let you. i could "boost" anything on the web but mastodon won't understand it except for an incredibly tiny subset of the web.

the web can provide access control too! the real "social web" is less about attention to me and more about letting people participate across websites. in that regard, a standard for identity is the most important missing piece. (consider hypothetically, we could expand on WWW-Authenticate and Authorization headers to negotiate identity for an individual HTTP request.)

i'm starting to get a little incredulous at the sheer number of times people suggest new protocol schemes and handlers for what is still fundamentally an HTTP resource
if we switched to serving web+activity: or fedi: or whatever, that'd be a horrific regression in UX because clicking/copying links would *break* for most people
the problem is most "fedi" apps are building a web browser inside a web browser. that's the fundamental ux sin. all else stems from that.

i think it's possible or even really the meta-default to have them be kept and given a cover -- the expiration is built on top of that. there's definitely room to tweak the design of the feature as well, so it's not like they have to end up exactly like instagram or snapchat.
as far as importing existing ones from instagram, that depends on whether instagram includes them in exported archives, and whether they're in a format that's easily convertible. so maybe not?

federation is just one way to achieve some form of decentralization... but only on one axis. the axis of "service provider choice". what is needed alongside this is a great "unbundling" of services.
in the usa, if you want to sign up for just internet, companies often (more often in the past) force you to bundle in phone and tv service as well. we can think of one of fedi's current problems as the bundling of several services into a single provider -- identity, data, communication.

i think that probably the single biggest barrier to mastodev is that everything is bottlenecked by needing approval from like, what, 2.5 people? there's a severe lack of community and a similarly severe lack of delegation. this is to say that the primary challenge mastodon faces is not technical, but rather it is an organizational challenge.

there was a time in like 2018 where it felt like notable changes actually were getting merged at a steady pace but after like 2019 it slowed down a lot. i think maybe because the early contributors burned out. probably also a sense of protocol stagnation due to the lack of w3c socialcg action until like 2023. probably also a worldview that the software was "good enough" and that all that was left was to slowly improve it. a confluence of factors really. but the end result is what we have now.

Are there any semantics at all, or is it a generic link/reference? What’s the difference between a “quote” and a “link preview”?

the web was not made to be federated imo because the web is not a messaging platform, it's a publishing platform. in messaging, you federate between systems; in publishing, you *syndicate* to other sites. there is a difference, and the difference matters.

no, “streams” carry no additional semantic meaning. it’s just a grab-bag of collections related to the actor, for example, say i categorized my posts into “tech”, “personal”, etc etc, i could link each collection from the streams property.

not sure what the "streams" property has to do with this, it seems completely unrelated. but i have thought before that Group is not very useful as an actual group of people because there's no good way to figure out membership.
one way to address this would be to dual-type [Group, Collection]
another way would be to use vcard:hasMember
a third way would be to define an extension property/collection indicating "members" that you can Join/Leave or be Add/Remove to by mods.
