Short book #review of a superb #Scandinoir novel, Silent John, a Shark detective story from Alice Myrskystäkoira https://www.amazon.com/myrskyst%C3%A4koira-ebook/dp/B0FZWPWK4K/141-8173797-7266369
The main character, DCI Aliisa Tuulikki Ykspetäjä, or Shark for short, is a Finn working for the police in Bradford, UK. She is as smart as they come, but with a complex, asocial personality ranging from extremely witty to cold and callous. She can be as nasty and evil as some of the criminals she arrests, truth be told. Her work colleagues are a mixed bunch too. The interactions and dialogue are very entertaining.
The scene-setting drops you straight into the depths of a Yorkshire town and surrounding rural area. By about half way, I started to put clues together, but there's always a twist and turn in the Shark series. The finale makes perfect sense, but not what I expected. Check it out. Well worth the price of admission.
btw, I'm not much of a reader, very little grabs my attention enough to sit down for a long read. But the Shark series draws me in very fast.

Today we dive into the archives of asteroid R56. In the year known as 2029 in the ancient Gregorian calendar, the landscape of an area in Sector 4-3-y, then quaintly known by Earthlings as New York, was completely changed when the Federation of Alabrasca detonated a series of primitive Proton bombs in key fashionable neighbourhoods. Can you imagine the dangers of such crude technology?
The net effect of this act of rebellion created the rolling hills depicted in this image. Ironically, the blast levelled Alabrasca too and eradicated a curious process known as photosynthesis, in effect precipitating the end of all Earthlings.
At various times, as Nature dictated, the landscape was populated by a species known as sheep. One curious fact about sheep; contrary to one of the Earthlings' truly remarkable talents – language – it was one sheep, two sheep. Eccentricity and inability to truly communicate personified.
As they overgrazed, the flocks died back. This image captures one of those cycles when Nature forced the sheep to leave in order to restore balance.
Apparently It would be another 123,000 earth years before the sheep understood the art of balance. Thank the Galactic Omni Distro that we never have to grapple with such ignorant earthly lunacy. How they must have suffered.

Not got a bad word against Proton and all their services. Are they the worlds best functioning email etc, no idea but I receive emails, minimal spam and as a cross device notetaker, document sharer, quick email address, calendar, vpn, so simple. I have an unhealthy relationship with poetry. There, I said the unthinkable out loud.
Verses and stanzas make me edgy and turn me illterate.
Limericks are OK, I can grasp what they are trying to say.
Recently I was dragged over the coals by a music fan because I owned Up that I don't even listen to lyrics, the tune is what hooks me in. That must also tie into my brain fart over anything containing a hint of poetics.
I think this aversion to the more arty creative side of language use hearkens back to the days of learning Latín. Call me old-fashioned, but layering four years of arcane grammar on top of metred Gallic Wars killed poetry for me.
In fact while I'm at It, I can say that state education from 11 to university killed my love of reading for pleasure, period. How can that be right? Rather than read, I write.

To run a business you need some sort of “bank” account. Try set up a Stripe account and then argue that bitcoin isn’t the best payment system ever devised. I still can’t believe the kyc hoops in place and the sense of “ feel grateful if we let you have a Stripe account”.
This is not how the world is supposed to work. It’s like pushing on string playing by the Fiat economy rules. Asking for permission to work hard or smart is a ridiculous and humiliating situation. On top of being taxed and then fed footage of the war destruction created by those holding the purse strings.
Bitcoin economy is the way ahead.

100% agree. What have you done today? I have BEEN :) Listened to birds, watched clouds scud across the sky and worked out what the weather was going to do for the next couple of hours. Cheap, educational... They would say that is irresponsible behaviour and the stuff of system collapse if everybody did it. They say it's only because most people pay into the system that allows a few people to BE, outside it. And there is a feeling of "them" trying to grab you back in for your sake, except it's for their sake. Besides, just because you look at clouds or listen to wildlife doesn't mean you don't have time to "do" anything. The opposite. Enjoying the natural world isn’t lazy or dangerous; it’s a cheap way to learn, relax, and become more effective when you return to bat way the frivolous demands of modern life.

Interesting thought experiment 😀 Instead of iris scans to open a Nostr account, a butt scan might be a better option. Limits us to one master account. Scanner built into every seat - from office chairs to cars to bike saddles to bar stools and mattresses - always online.
When you log in there’s a nice welcome message…. (Thinking on the details). Super secure because, unlike my iris, nobody is likely to rip out my asshole to access my innermost secrets. Or if they did, they deserve to suffer that stream of consciousness.

Interesting observations on arbitrary nature of investigating various aspects of bitcoin and crypto.
Politicians go after Binance for dealing with individuals from latest enemy state. Yet no investigation into who is behind dodgy transactions embedding illegal content on the enemy-agnostic bitcoin blockchain. And the billions spent on KYC is netting under 1% returns while endangering the 99% with every unfortunate data breach.
The inconsistency is almost comical—meat-and-potatoes stuff for anyone writing about the absurdities of modern enforcement. If the busybodies were consistent, we’d be out of a job.

Good article! If Nostr is ever going to grow into its boots, people on legacy platforms need to understand two things: the pitfalls of where they are, and the fact that serious alternatives exist.
But it’s not enough to say “go decentralised, problem solved.” Bitcoiners hate being lumped in with twenty thousand copy‑paste tokens; in the same way, Nostr has to make it clear that it is not just another “decentralised social network.”
The motives and philosophies of the people building these alternatives matter. Bluesky is not simply “Twitter for lefties,” and Nostr is not “Twitter for right‑leaning users.” What really defines each network is the worldview of its founders. Bluesky’s leadership, for example, is broadly comfortable with centralised control mechanisms “when needed.” (See post-2024 elections.) That means their commitment to decentralisation comes with caveats. It is a hybrid living on the edge of mission‑creep, governance capture, and the same old story: decentralised in branding, centralised in practice. "Square 1" is always potentially just around the next corner.
Look closely at most so‑called decentralised networks and you find similar control levers baked in. Despite the best of intentions, over time, those levers grind away at the original promise of true decentralisation. A nudge from this agency, a poke from a VC here, a new faction shouts there... Nostr is different because of its roots in Bitcoin culture, where freedom and self‑sovereignty dominate the mindset. That heritage makes the network structurally and culturally more resistant to capture.
Refugees from legacy platforms need clear information on what defines decentralised platforms. Regardless of their political or cultural leanings, users who are fed up with feeds controlled by algorithms and frustrated that their reach is of secondary importance to corporate advertisers' needs – need to know what a refined, robust decentralised network really looks like.
Other “decentralised” platforms may look busier, slicker, or more familiar right now. But Nostr is NOT just another escape hatch from algo‑hell and overbearing moderation. It is, arguably, the most ambitious decentralised communications project on the table—aiming for far more than being a Twitter killer.

I'm not clever, but I am observant. Any inconsistency is immediately obvious. That insight is what I bring to the #OlgaSejeHansen thrillers. The absurdity of some acceptable behaviour is laid bare. But what if we paired that immutable money with a force for good?
Imagine an AI swarm that constantly monitors, verifies, and disseminates evidence of aggression, drowning out misinformation. After listening to the recent pod about Clawi, it seems feasible to have an LLM agent in every home—or an army of LLM agents in every home—more good than ever fighting evil.
When that AI truth army runs on a Bitcoin‑based incentive layer—a match the community identified years ago—the cost of silencing truth becomes financially ruinous for any regime that tries.

I once tried importing custom rugs from Nepal, the weaver could make one piece literally any size any design - at 100 knots/inch. The sample was so good and along with the range of custom options, the carpet sellers I approached said I was a BS merchant. That was pre-internet. Definitely need to show the public how you work.

It's challenging writing about fights between the heroine, #OlgaSejeHansen and the bad guys, like, really bad guys. Before joining the Helsinki Police "Bears" unit – Finnish SWAT team – her title was "Unarmed Combat Instructor" at the Utti Jaeger Regiment. She trained Special Forces operatives to fight hand-to-hand asychronously. What does that mean?
When baddies face a Tier 1 fighter like Olga, they have little to no idea where the first or next strike is coming from.
She doesn't fight to a pattern, but to opportunities. A body feint left, fists up, halfway through the feint she may let go a kick to the groin, or maybe a hook kick to the jaw, or maybe a spear punch to the throat. Even if the opponent doesn't go down, it will hurt or deaden a limb. Either way the strike will momentarily disorient even trained fighters. That moment of confusion is the opportunity for another kind of strike if required. Asynchronous.
So unlike most Hollywood fights, there is no pattern, no kata-styled one-two-threes. And definitely no fluff. The aim is to take out an opponent in a few seconds.
Does the heroine always get her own way? No. But she is not there to entertain with extended, glamorous fight sequences, or give anyone a chance. So, it is quite hard to write such a degree of unpredictability into action scenes.
Rather like describing how we walk, it can also be frustrating to break down the subtleties and even harder to communicate them without a reader glazing over in too much detail. Nothing like a challenge.
This is about 6 seconds of action...
Seje moved out of range of Bozo’s reflexive flailing hammer fists, angling for a disabling strike to the groin.
Fists ready, upper body feinting left then right. On the first feint left her right heel stomped inside by her left foot. A heartbeat later, like a dancer, she flowed her body upright and glided her right leg back into its original rear position. Seventy percent weight on the back leg, still primed to strike with either knee.
Bozo was focused on her left leg.
One instant muscle memory strike was on its way to find out.
Pushing off her right foot, she shifted her weight forward, leg, hips, knee and foot unleashed in one whipping move, full power. No evasive action from Bozo. The dance worked.
But as the ball of her foot landed, she realised, "Fuck, he's wearing body armour over his balls." The full force of the strike between Bozo's legs glanced to the side, his thigh absorbing the bulk of the blow. He winced but stood his ground.
Re-focusing, she took advantage of a lull in his aggression...
"No armour where this is landing."
