For Freya's sixth birthday, her brother Lazarus wrote her a story about climbing the highest tree in the world and plucking a few stars from the sky while he was up there. He told her he stuck some of those stars in a peach pit so they could have a nap and gave it to her.
"If you're really quiet, you can hear the little star snore."
She believed him, and on a bad day, she can still hear it snore.

"The ship had never been seen again, but there are a myriad of stories around town that speculate about its fate. Perhaps you could deduce some truth in those," Frida noted calmly.
Elli nodded as she picked some crumbs off of Patchy's face.
"There should always be pie and love. This is nice pie. So maybe the thingy that is not here is this love—the Kra and Kristina love," Patchy proposed.

Frida chuckled. "Perhaps that is indeed what this world is missing. Unlikely Kraken love," she summarized aloud.
Elli frowned. It all seems a little too amusing for Frida, but then she remembers how she nearly seemed to expect them back in An-chovy city.
"So we are on a quest to find both the ship named Kristina and the Kraken formerly known as Kristina," Eddy stated while flinging around his pie-laden fork.
Patchy jumped and nodded in agreement.

Kra flapped his feathers slowly. "You asked me if I knew what the world was missing, and I answered honestly. In my world of shiny things, it is her. When I saw her last, she was a Kraken, and I thought her name was Kristina. But I am starting to suspect that she was looking for this ship Frida just mentioned. Perhaps she, too, is looking for that thing that is missing?" he proposed.
"Sound logical to me," Eddy mumbled while munching on some pie.

Kra jumped onto the table. "Very well, I should come clean. I wasn't always a crow. Once upon a time, I was different. I can't precisely remember what I was, but I remember her. I don't think we had names when we met. We swam together for aeons. It was bliss, and we loved each other, but the humans came, the ships sank, and I became obsessed with the shiny things I found in the wreckage. I cursed myself and changed my form to find more."

Frida stopped what she was doing and turned back to the group.
"What do you know of the Kristina? It disappeared nearly a hundred years ago," Frida proclaimed, now eyeing them suspiciously.
"And it certainly wasn't a kraken that took it down. We would have found something of the ship if it had been," she added hushedly.
Kra blinked as he considered this. "Perhaps it wasn't her name after all," he mused aloud with a sigh.
"She was so beautiful."

"Frida?" Elli asked.
"Yes, dear? Have we met?" Frida asked.
"Not yet," Eddy chuckled.
"Well, in that case. Take a seat. I'll bring you a taste of the best pies in Tu-Na!" she declared as she gestured towards a table.
The confused group sat down, and she hummed while slicing some pie.
"Guild mages?" she asked while doing so.

"It seems that this is before the sentience equality laws," Elli noted. She kneeled close to Kra. "Either we play along or forfeit our quest," she whispered as she removed a ribbon from her hair.
Kra groaned in protest but accepted. Elli tied her ribbon to Kra's claw and stood back up.
"Do you happen to know of a Kraken or perhaps someone by the name of Kristine?" Elli asked the man.
"Temple, down that way," he grunted.
"But, pie," Patchy asked Elli.

A large, imposing, but blank-faced man walked up to the group. "Quest registration is two blocks down, large brain coral building, office number six," he grunted as he moved past Patchy and entered the pie shop.
"Oh, that is sorted, sir. We are mages of the metaphysical guild," Elli countered. The man stopped walking, paused and raised a single eyebrow.
"Interesting. Not here for our treasure then?" he probed.
Kra hopped. "Treasure?" he asked.

Elli held her breath, even though that was the one thing she did not need to do here. Slowly, the fish that had swam past them started swimming backwards.
"Holy stars," Elli muttered as the reverse of time increased in speed. The sun moved, becoming dawn, then night, then evening, and then speeding up so much that the green light of the sun seen from underneath the lake started to flash like disco lights.
"Wow," they collectively whispered.

"What's pie? Is pie tasty?" Patchy asked Eddy.
"Oh, yes. Some, even better than milkshakes," Eddy explained. Patchy swam up closer to the store.
"Long gone now, I'm afraid," he added.
Patchy made some sad little dragon noises.
"We're finally here. We finally found it, but we're too late," Elli lamented.
"Can we make the pie be in the now?" Patchy asked Kra.
"If only we could turn back time," Kra noted casually.
Eddy's eyes widened.

"Maybe we need a questing permit," Eddy joked.
"It's likely been abandoned for aeons," Elli countered as she watched Patchy and Kra swim around using their wings.
As they swam closer, they marvelled at the sight of the buildings wholly grown from coral, but there was no sign of life.
The sun shined through the water and bathed the cityscape in emerald hues as the group swam above it.
"Must have been on the surface at some point," Elli pondered aloud.

"We should be able to breathe and swim as long as we keep the theremin with us," Elli deduced aloud. Batman grunted in confirmation.
Eddy stuck his tongue out. "It's not salty. Perhaps it sent us to the lake after all?" he proposed.
"Who knows? It didn't exactly come with a manual," Elli shrugged.
"This could either be the vacation home of a Kraken or Stur-Geon city," Eddy added.

As they galloped along, the air around them started to shimmer, and Batman's stride became slower and longer. With every step, they jumped higher and landed more slowly until, finally, they swam.
"For the last time! It's under a lake, or near a lake, or something." Elli shouted as the realization caught up to her brain. "Why aren't we drowning?" she asked aloud as they each realized they'd somehow found themselves underwater.

"No!" Eddy declared, grabbing the theremin. They jumped on Batman's back, and the group galloped down the streets to escape the fates.
Freya turned to her sister. "Why would you tell them that!?" she asked, but the knowing smile on Fiona's face revealed that it wasn't at all such a slip of the tongue.
Freya folded her arms as she watched the group scamper.
She summarized, "Two mages, a dragon, a crow, and a capybara made of without a time machine."

"But you'd best take your friend with you. If the guards get wind of the black feathered bandit in our city, they will come after him for all the shiny things he's stoled throughout the kingdom over the years," she warned.
Elli groaned. "We are never getting to Stur-Geon," she complained.
Freya laughed loudly. "Stur-Geon is a long-lost city known for its hidden treasure," she revealed.

"Where is Kra?" Eddy asked Batman and Patchy.
"UURGGA URHIHI UUUHHNNN" Batman explained.
"Yes, that makes sense. That's what he did the last time he visited a city full of shiny things," Fiona said as she rolled her eyes. When Elli's frown explained that they could not understand Batman without him using his psychic powers, she inhaled.
"Kra is known as the black feather bandit in most cities. Wherever he goes, he incites an army of theaves," she explained.

Before they could rebuke those assessments, Patchy jumped into Elli's arms, and Batman crashed into Eddy.
Freya chuckled at the sight. "It seems you were missed," she noted with an amused smile as Batman took a bite from Eddy's hair and Patchy tried to climb into Elli's coat.
"FreyFrey!" Patchy suddenly exclaimed as she spotted Freya.
"Hello, little one. I see your patience has indeed resulted in the odd family you were hoping for," she remarked.

Eddy paused, contemplated the feedback, and shrugged. "Onwards to the edge!" he declared as he took his position behind the theremin once again.
"No Eddy, Don't!" Elli yelled with fright. But before the rational of her protest could sink in, Eddy played his tune.
The entire universe whooshed by a kaleidoscope of colours.
Elli, Eddy, Freya and the theremin loudly crashed into a restaurant.
"Table for three?"

Eddy's expression dropped to one of extreme focus and solemnity. He cleared his throat.
"No one would have believed, in the last years of the nineteenth century, that human affairs were being watched from the timeless worlds of space. No one could have dreamed that we were being scrutinised as someone with a microscope studies creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water." he started—which confused Freya to no end while Elli chuckled.

"Who are? Really?" Elli asked Frida directly.
"I'm one of three, dear. Best of luck," Frida replied before vanishing.
"Three?" Elli pondered as she looked around. After another moment, it gently started raining shiny things.
"Shiny! Shiny!" Kra cawed loudly, and a murder of crows descended upon the shiny things scattered across the city.

"We'll figure it out, Eddy," Elli reassured him.
"What needs figuring?" Patchy asked.
"We must discover what is missing in this reality to restore it. It remains incomplete somehow," Elli explained to Patchy.
Frida smiled kindly. "You're getting closer every day, my young friends," she whispered before the world shimmered and they plummeted into the middle of An-Chovy.

"What's a family? Is that tasty, too?" Patchy asked in return. This pointed out to Elli that this adorable little creature was alone.
Elli flipped open Sam's book and concentrated as she conjured the door of many returns.
"Come with us, Patchy. There is a whole world out there," Elli proposed.

"I wish I knew," the lady remarked.
Eddy contemplated the conundrum. "Hey, dragon! Want some of my milkshake?" he called out.
A humongous shadow flickered across the cave wall, and another roar echoed. Frightened but cornered, the group took several steps backwards until, finally, the dragon jumped into view.
"Aww!" Eddy exclaimed.

"Ah, young mages. First quest?" the ice cream lady sighed as she handed everyone their milkshakes.
"First one with such an entourage," Elli countered as she took a sip but kept her eyes on the encroaching sounds of the dragon.
She dusted off her hands and looked around. "Conjure or teleportation?" she inquired as she placed her hands on her hips.

I was thirteen. It wasn’t a special day for me at all. I went to school, smashed some moss with a hammer to see the sparkles and killed some time in the garden. If I could do that day over again, I would hurry off to Hillystone and steal Dio and Val from the orphanage the moment they were dumped there. I would ensure their world would be filled with love from the day they were born, as it should have been.

While she made the yellow wool milkshake for Batman, Elli flipped through some more pages of Sam's book. She found a story featuring a beautiful emerald and decided it would be nice to conjure it into the lovely lady's tip jar. She concentrated, and with little green flashes, her magic started to take shape, but just as she was about to conjure the object, Eddy sneezed, and Kra startled and flapped his wings, startling Batman, who bumped into Elli.

As the lady hummed and turned her back to prepare their orders, Elli pondered how normal a rainbow-coloured capybara wanting a yarn-flavoured milkshake could seem to her. She shrugged it off and opened Sam's book. A meticulous bundle of imaginative stories Elli was able to utilize to conjure just about anything it contained. After a few seconds, she found mention of a small stack of gold coins and conjured those up on the counter as payment.

Batman shook his big round Capybara booty as Eddy and Kra sang. "Nana nana nana nana nana nana nana, Milkshakes!" as they gallopped down the street. Spotting a child licking an ice cream cone, they rushed up to inquire about the shop's location, but the stunned little boy pointed them in the right direction before they could ask.
"Thank you!" Kra called out.
"Desmond's Delicious Delights. This must be the place!" Eddy declared as he read the sign.

The guard regained his senses and turned to Kra.
"Alright, tell me, is it true that the crows of our city have turned to organised crime?" he asked Kra.
"Organised? No, not all that organised at all," Kra answered.
The guard huffed, but the sight of Batman sternly looking up at him unsettled the man, so he stepped aside to let them pass.
They rode into the imposing town of An-Chovy and marvelled at the sight of the intricately painted concrete buildings.

The guard studied Batman with an unimpressed expression.
"Sentient, huh? What is your name?" he inquired of Batman.
"HEAAAAURGG," Batman yawned in response.

Elli reached around her. Arms spread, she conjured up a breeze made of sunlight to dry them off.
"Wow," Kra whispered in awe as he spread his wings and let the breezy sun dry his feathers.
"WHHEARRAAAH!" Batman declared as he shook his fur, nearly shaking Eddy and Elli off his back.
Eddy chuckled, twirled around his hand, and suddenly, the sunshine smelled like strawberry.
"Yeah, I could also go for a milkshake," Elli declared jovially.

"I love that song!" Kra proclaimed.
"Under the sea. Caw!" Kra attempts to sing along with Eddy.
"It's a few day's ride to whatever is left of Stur-Geon. We'll have to stop at An-Chovy tonight," Elli explained, amused at the impromptu sing-along.
Kra flaps his wings.
"I've been there—a wealthy city with many shiny things," he remarked.
"Let's try to behave this time, alright?" Elli urged.
Eddy huffed. "I wasn't the one utilising an army of parrots!"

Elli nodded as she kept her focus on guiding Batman. "All mages have always known that something is missing in this world. As I have explained, my theory is that the fates know what that missing piece is, so we have only to surrender to the story's narrative and go with the flow. Scholarly research has never yielded a solution; it's time to try the eclectic and imaginary to determine what reality is missing!" Elli explained to her companions.

"Little bit, yes. Let's go! Come on!" Elli exclaimed. Batman galloped up to Elli and Eddy, they jumped onto his back and our entrapped anti-heroes made their escape.
Kra flew past and out in front.
"West!" Elli declared as they rushed out of the town gates at speed.
"Ribbit!" echoed after them. The ground shook and the horde of Keas ran past them burping loudly.
"Good cracker," one of them informed Elli as he ran past.

"Ran into an inflatable balloon mage. A disagreeable one. Can we take this stew to go?" Elli proposed looking back towards the library.
"Don't worry about it. My new friend will protect us," Eddy reassured as he gestured. Elli ignored his vague statement "I do know where the town should have been. The lake should still. wow. holy stars." Elli trailed off as she finally glanced up.
"Ribbit!" a building-sized frog bellowed through the streets.

"You assume I'm in command of my feathery friends here," Elli casually countered.
"I am done with this. Come here you little magic wrench!" he bellowed as he charged at Elli.
In one smooth motion, Elli reached into the imagination of her parrot friends and suddenly all they could see was one giant angry cracker guilty of attacking their new friend. The Keas charged at full force. Feathers and curses filled the library as Elli made a run for it.

"Polly is also very aware of what type of mages decimated their home environment," Elli countered.
"Polly wants your cracker!" the parrots screeched in disconcerting unison as they stared menacingly at the man.
As Elli slowly moved a few steps towards. "Fun fact, these are Keas. The only non-vegetarian parrot. They don't just want your cracker, to them, you are one," Elli explained as her eyes darkened.
"Cracker! Cracker!" the Keas screeched.

"Oh hell's bells. You're one of those," Elli muttered as she walked backwards. "You know, before trying to intimidate a random mage in the library you should really consider the sort of magic this she wields," Elli informed the inflating man.
As she walked backwards she stumbled against a desk and fond her hand leaning on "The ultimate book on parrots," she smirked up at the man, her eyes lit up and a entire tornado of parrots burst from the book.

They headed into the nearest town and shopped around for a map yet no one had heard of the town named Stur-Geon nor lake Tar-Tar. After a frustratingly long day keeping Eddy focused Elli decided to let him keep chatting to the frogs near the riverbanks in order for her to sneak into the library. Deep in the dustiest part of the library Elli finally find mention of the long lost town of Stur-Geon that had abruptly been abandoned on a sunny day in November.

"But you know Kristine should be there is lake Tar-Tar?" Elli asked Kra.
"Well, yes, but only because she told me that's where she was going on vacation. I met her near Terschelling," Kra explained.
"I guess we're going to have to find a map first," Eddy noted.
"Onwards to the map shop!" Elli declared and Eddy turned Batman in the direction of the nearest town.
"Wait. Kra, how would we even know if this place is near by at all?" Elli inquired.

I have two sorts of real “villains”, the obvious ones, demonic looking humanoids and, members of the syndicate that look like everyone else but to show their allegiance have a tattoo on the soles of their feet.
I explicitly do not want these people to look a certain way. They are just people. Mean, flawed, greedy, drug addicted, egos on parade but just people.
