I bought a used radeon 7900 off of ebay. I have a very old dual xeon supermicro motherboard with 256GB of DDR3 that it’s installed in. I can run much larger models than 30b but that’s the cutoff of for what I consider a close parity for my use cases between open source models (I use Qwen) and commercial ones like Opus, Sonnet, or GPT.
If you have a GPU with 16GB of VRAM and 32GB of system RAM you can have a decent experience for some use cases. I use it primarily as my Joplin interface for notes and task planning with OpenClaw, and for scripting/prototyping with Claude Code.

Claude Code itself works really well against local models if you have the hardware to run something in the 30b parameter range. And hey it's already been open sourced so when Anthropic ceases to exist the agent will still be around in some form.

While I was in college my partner at the time was a barista and bought a little cold brew kit. So she lets it go overnight on a Friday and gets up to go out on Saturday morning and tells me to try the coffee in the fridge when I get up.
Either she forgot or I was half asleep when she told me but I didn’t know it was concentrated and needed to be cut down before drinking.
So I pour my usual cup with breakfast and thought I was having a heart attack in the shower afterward. 😂

My privacy is literally forever breached because an HR person at a former employer fell for a phishing attempt and sent 800+ W-4s to someone claiming to be our CEO.
I would estimate 75%+ of all spam calls and emails I get are directly related to that breach. I know this because when I play along they’re almost always using my contact info from that job. My credit has to stay frozen at all times forever, I file my taxes with ID PINs, it’s such a mess and it will be forever.

Yeah agreed. That’s why it’s hard to find a ton of fault with this other than the cost the workers will pay. It’s menial labor but these people would likely be in the gig economy without it.
I guess I’ve come around over the years to considering TSA more as a federal low skill jobs program than an organization providing any real security benefit. It’s a union job with decent benefits. Not many of those around. No wonder this admin wants to eliminate it.

I would not be shocked at all if unemployment doesn’t budge much. We still haven’t backfilled the 3/4 of a million people covid has taken out of the workforce through death or disability in the past 5 years.
Eventually I’m going to be wrong here but they seem to keep trying the same tricks to crash the economy for no reason that used to work but just don’t anymore. I have not kept up with industry and demographic hiring trends for a while though.
I figured tariffs would be the nuclear option but Trump keeps chickening out on actually enforcing the ones that would matter.

We’ve blocked all of them that we can. Can’t have people uploading random spreadsheets to free versions of this slop.
I also managed to fight back ChatGPT since the only way you can run a “local” instance internal to your VPC is in Azure and we’re never going to be in Microsoft’s cloud.
Amazon Q is more interesting to me from a corporate use standpoint as one, it’s in your VPC, two has native access to most of our data, and three it transparently uses your IAM role to limit access to data your role has access to. So if it needs to use data from an S3 bucket you can’t read from you won’t get an answer to your question

I mean Lauren knows what he’s doing. But in general I dissuade people, especially less technical people, from using Snaps every time it comes up. Closed source backend, Canonical controlled with their snap repositories literally hardcoded in, iffy compatibility at times, no thanks.
Now there are some garbage third party maintained flatpaks for sure. That’s why I caveat with the project maintainers publishing the flatpak themselves.

In my experience if the flatpak is maintained by the project team it’s usually the best way to run that application.
Especially if you’re using a distro like Debian and want to stay on relatively current versions of the software you use.

I made the mistake of engaging with a thread over the weekend where an obvious paranoid schizophrenic decided to start replying to me.
I’ve muted them on my PC but the fact that mutes are only client side means my notifications are likely a god damn minefield and I’m avoiding looking at them on my phone. This is a REALLY STUPID DESIGN.
