They sell us a world of surgical efficiency, of services a click away, of absolute security. A digital paradise where the nuisance of a queue at the registry office and the tedium of a paper form will be but an archaeological memory. All very beautiful. But there's a detail they're trying to make vanish into oblivion with the nonchalance of a third-rate magician: what about those who can't afford the entrance ticket to this paradise?
Because the kingdom of the digital ID, like all respectable kingdoms, has its walls, its gates, and its guardians. And the toll to enter is called: latest-generation smartphone, stable and fast internet connection, non-trivial technological competence, and, above all, the time and mental serenity to navigate these labyrinths. Try explaining to an elderly person who has toiled all their life, to whom an ATM is still a device worthy of an Asimov novel, that from now on their identity, their pension, their administrative existence will reside in a digital "wallet" on a gadget they have a harder time turning on than hoeing the earth. Try telling that to an unemployed person whose priority is feeding their children, not buying a gigabyte of data to authenticate themselves on a government portal.
