the developments at gitlab feel unsettling. we have all our sources in a self hosted gitlab since a long time, and migrating to i.e. forgejo would be a big undertaking, with the tons of deeplinks from our docs into the repositories, a bunch of tricked-out CI yamls etc. and we're under a lot of pressure to ship hardware atm, so i can't pick that battle right now :/

hell yeah, got displayport alt mode over usb-c working on rk3588 pocket reform with mainboard 2.0!
in the end it was a DP lane polarity issue: USB3 allows lane polarity swap for better PCB routing, but DP doesn't. tricky when you need to reuse the same lanes for both.

preview of pocket mb 2.0 (still needs minor polishing). new power system incl. more switchable rails. "on" button. a lot of the routing redone. usb-c section became complicated :D theoretical support for displayport alt-mode and multiple muxes for usb-uart, rp2040 access from the outside etc

the argument "but you're also no longer using a fountain pen to write" against hand-written code is silly to me. i think close to 100% of people would rather read a short story written in fountain pen by octavia e. butler or william gibson than something that a rando ai-prompted? they could even take their time, why would it need to be rushed?

for whoever needs to hear this: you're not alone. i'm not vibecoding any of the software i write. i'm writing it by hand, but i've leveled up my emacs with eglot/lsp. i'm modernizing my stacks and use languages with excellent compilers. i think about how to do more with less. i'm trying to combine the best human-written libraries and modules and assemble them with minimal boilerplate. i enjoy reading your manuals and references. i believe in robust, secure, human-written software.

we're launching RK3588 processor + 8GB RAM + 64GB eMMC models of MNT Reform and MNT Pocket Reform at prices lowered by 100 EUR: https://shop.mntre.com
at the same time, we bumped up the eMMC on the 16GB RAM + 128GB version, which was the only variant since the beginning of the year, to 16GB RAM + 256GB eMMC with a 50 EUR price increase.
we've also updated the variants of the upgrade modules for Pocket and classic Reform in a similar fashion.

experimental glass panel with bonded display for mnt pocket reform. pretty fancy, but tested for you: putting screws in glass is not the best idea (cracks very quickly under tension)

also, is it a general android 15 problem that notifications are super wonky/random? for example, [@holo_memory](https://mastodon.gamedev.place/@holo_memory ) is writing to me on signal while i'm typing here on masto, and most of the time the phone vibrates in my hand but shows no visual indicator of what happened, _or_ sometimes the message pops up on top of what i'm doing. both are not ideal. i wish the notification bar was useful somehow. currently it shows the time and 4 old icons from stuff i didn't check, and that doesn't update. normal?

pondering to upgrade from fp5 to fp6:
—the new toggle switch could really work for me because i often have to switch between dnd and normal mode, but on my fp5 android the button is often broken (doesn't react) in quick settings
—now that i have a lot of pictures on the phone, the camera sometimes doesn't save quickly enough so i lose photos or get motion blurry photos. also the camera often overexposes by default, which is supposedly better on the fp6
i don't really have cash at the moment tho

well the qcs6490+qcs8550 projects share the same pcb design as the thundercomm modules have a mostly compatible pin layout, so we can do the bringup in a kind of overlapped way. there's also lots of stuff that's not working yet. for me it's very important to see as quickly as possible how well cpu+gpu work with real-world applications before sinking too much time and effort into a module. performance validation so to speak

i removed all 32GB RAM options from our shop for now because of the chip shortage. everyone that ordered it will still get it though! that includes people who bought MNT Reform Next and RCORE on Crowd Supply. Firefly (and others) tell us that they can't get the 32GB chips at the moment. your stuff is now officially rare and sought after! 16GB is now the remaining option. i'm looking into introducing 8GB options but don't have updated prices yet.

oh, got another green tinted PCB photo from JLC for MNT Reform Next's right-hand port board (to confirm parts placement). this one has a lot of superspeed USB going on, including a TI hub and a reclocker/redriver. plus a less exciting HDMI port. here i'll solder in a chip and 2 mid-mount connectors myself to save time.

i'm debugging why microsd express card (pcie) doesn't link in latest 2 reform next board revisions. refclk on the slot pins looked like this: not good, big emi spike frequency disturbing it... (the clock signal is the yellow "sausage" in the middle, 100mhz. at least it tries to be)

i want something like Wine, but for AmigaOS applications, but, hear me out, the API/ABI would include chipset emulation and ROM. multiple mini Amiga VMs could still share a filesystem and message passing. boring and obvious take, but i find AI stuff only interesting when it fails in hilarious or dangerous ways, and i find grifters and snake-oil salesmen fascinating in a crime-drama kind of way. i'll never respect AI output as a creative work because it's just random machine garbage and i'm only interested in real people's art and struggles, because i can emotionally connect only to real people, i mean that is why we do art, writing, film, games etc, not to look at machine kitsch

yesterday i set up an environment for faster kernel development iteration (esp. for rk3588). it builds a monolithic kernel using the patchstack we have for debian kernel version, but on a real git checkout. i can boot the kernel+dtb directly after compiling over the network (tftp) and into a busybox/toybox/static binaries environment to avoid boot times. i then figured out that suspend to s2idle works with that kernel and added the missing code to dts and fw to make it wake via the keyboard.
