On average, the Dutch think that 20% of the people here is Muslim (it's 5%).
They overestimate our income tax rate by 28%.
They think the number of homicides is on the rise (it's falling).
And that agriculture takes 19% of our land area (it's 60%).
And they have strong opinions on all of the above.

The wealthy will try to stay wealthy, and companies will point at their international competition.

All-time low water flow in the river Rhine!
Where it enters the Netherlands, only 614 m³/s yesterday, breaking the November 1947 record of 620 m³/s. In summer, this is unheard of: normally it's around 1700 m³/s. Little or no rain upstream.

However, in the past 10 years, October hardly contributed to the filling level (average +0.34% for the entire month*), as the heating season already starts then.
So, we're on course for only around 60% by the target date.

At the average rate of the past 10 days of +0.36% per day, we would still get to 70%, with 107 days to go to the target date. But the supply situation is worsening with the Trump/Netanyahu war escalating once more. Very high prices today.

Halfway the EU gas storage filling season, the Netherlands is lagging. Our storages are only at 31% now, way behind the EU average of 53%, and other major storage countries like France (52%), Germany (45%) and Italy (71%).
Based on security of supply advice by Gasunie, Dutch government had set a target of 80% by 1 November 2026. Our EU obligation is 74%. Both would practically seem out of reach by now, which is unfortunate in view of our dependence on LNG imports in an unstable world.

In short, this is a weirdly extreme event, only possible due to climate change. As @tinuspulles.bsky.social pointed out, explanations like 'heat dome' and 'jet stream' are about mechanisms. The driving force behind all of this is global warming, largely due to burning fossil fuels.

The absolute high temperatures that we'll experience in the coming days are extreme, too. For 75 years, we knew that the highest temperature ever recorded was 38.6°C in Warnsveld (1944). Then came July 2019, and we crashed forward to 40.7°C (Gilze Rijen, 25 July).
Now, 39-40°C is already possible again.

I'm afraid that many here in the Netherlands don't fully understand yet how hot the coming days will be. We're heading for 4 consecutive days like this (map for Wednesday). 35°C really feels different than 30°C!
The weirdest part is that this already happens in June.

People who are not aware of the practical irreversibility of climate change may think 'Sometime in the future, we'll figure out how to reduce emissions to zero, and then everything will be fine again'. While it won't.
So it could lead to too little sense of urgency.

I have the impression that, while public awareness of climate change is widespread, awareness of its irreversibility and long-term lock-in remains limited and substantially below scientific understanding.

On making (energy intensive) industry sustainable:
18. Create level playing field: no national CO2 tax, substantial reduction of electricity cost, binding agreements with industry on speed of emission reduction.
19. New tailor-made agreements with industry clusters or areas.

Reasonably favorable poll, 4 days before the Dutch elections.
Wilders' PVV going downhill, although still the largest. Current right-far-right coalition partners together polling at 46 out of 150 seats, while they had 88 in the previous elections (2023), losing half of their support in 2 years.

Three weeks before the elections in the Netherlands, the polls don't look good. After the complete failure of the coalition in which Wilders' PVV was the largest party, it again leads the polls. But now 'farmers' party' BBB has moved there too, the far-right in total may get around 1/3 of the votes.

2023 elections, the Netherlands: many vote for weird parties hoping they'll do a better job than normal parties. Weird parties argue for half a year, form a coalition, do little and keep on arguing.
Same voters now: we really don't trust politics anymore. Politicians do little and keep arguing.

Double-failed Dutch government coalition still refuses to call Israel's ongoing genocide in Gaza a genocide. Let alone take all possible actions against the perpetrator as the Genocide Convention requires. Which means the Netherlands is complicit.

I'd still say "NL needs additional emission reduction measures", but the outgoing coalition sure hasn't made it easier.

The chance that the Netherlands will meet its binding EU goal of a 39% share of renewable energy in final consumption by 2030 is now also very small; one factor is the slowing down of offshore wind developments.
Adn so is the chance that we'll meet our energy demand reduction goal.

Under current policies, the Netherlands will miss its own Climate Law 2030 target (emissions -55% compared to 1990), says the government's PBL institute. The additional measures announced this spring by the (now double-failed) right-far-right coalition are insufficient.

The Netherlands has a housing shortage. In the run-up to the October elections, some politicians are claiming we're 1 million homes short. Not true.
We're 396,000 homes (4.8%) short, while 170,000 (2%) is seen as a normal, manageable shortage. So we would need 226,000 additional homes now.

Averaged over the year, a battery electric passenger car in the Netherlands uses 350-400 Watt.
But a home charger usually has a capacity of 11,000 or even 22,000 Watt. That's why we need smart, grid-conscious charging.

In the same decade, the share of renewables in Dutch electricity production grew from just over 10% to almost 50%, putting pressure on the 'capture prices' for wind and solar (wholesale prices lower when there's a lot of wind and solar around).

The strike price for Hinkley Point C - which the operator receives no matter the value of electricity on the power market - was originally set at £92.50 per MWh, in 2012 prices.
But it's inflation-linked, so it's now already around £147 per MWh. That's €170 per MWh, or €0.17 per kWh.
