Whenever people raise worry about the environmental impacts of AIgen megadatacenter rollout and then that Kind of Guy says well you don't know, actually it's probably very little, don't worry about it
- When they are publicly announcing the size of datacenters they want to roll out
- When they are building new gas power plants to supplement them
- When water is disappearing around the globe and it's disappearing in datacenter deployed areas even faster
- When we know that we are RUNNING OUT OF TIME on our climate clock already and should be prioritizing ABOVE ALL ELSE extending our clock
- When AI CEOs are saying they are going to build datacenters IN SPACE, the worst place for them you can think of
- When they are pushing for nuclear power with YOLO safety deregulation
It feels like gaslighting. Because it IS gaslighting.
We are running out of time on this planet. There is new space for hope with massive developments in renewables.
We don't have time for this. Don't bullshit us.

But Anthropic acquired Bun, so I imagine this project has effectively as many tokens to use as it wants.
If this rewrite succeeds, this will effectively not only be a "fuck you Zig for not accepting my AIgen patches", it'll be a big headline and marketing story for Anthropic: look! Claude could rewrite Bun from Zig to Rust!
It's hard for me to read this then as anything but an experiment to see if Anthropic can get a big marketing boost in favor of vibecoding from.

So the "Bun being a vibe coded rewrite from Zig to Rust" is a different story than I think it's being sold as, from everything I can see. It's worth seeing several events laid out back to back.

I'm empathetic to how damn hard it is to raise funding for FOSS nonprofits. That's a large portion of my job, and well, money has gotten a lot tighter lately. Finding anything at all, paying your people, is damn hard.

Bummer. Blender is still my favorite software, but I'm worried about how this will affect artists. Blender is 100% controllable in every way via its very good Python API. It's not surprising that there's interest to control it from AI agents.
I won't take myself out of the loop of producing my own artwork, and I don't think any software will replace Blender as my favorite graphics software, but I am bummed out by this.
I hope Blender doesn't start incorporating genAI contributions into its codebase also.

We don't know who's funding this stuff for sure, there was the vibecoded analysis that came to the conclusion of Meta, but I suspect that could be true but Meta wouldn't be alone.
Who stands to benefit from this? A lot of forces of centralization, and anti-LGBTQ orgs:
- Microsoft, for sure, since they are seeing Windows' dominance threatened?
- Apple, for similar reasons?
- Peter Theil and similar surveillance company owners and operators?
- Anti-queer orgs and think tanks like the Heritage Foundation?
- Cloudflare, who will probably run the age verification paywalls everyone will be forced to deploy?
Who's behind this? Who's getting politicians so excited about it? There's such a swell of bipartisan support seemingly out of nowhere, and my suspicion is a lot of that enthusiasm is coming from check-writing.
So who's behind it?

This is a really good blogpost. And I"m sure it'll make some people unhappy to read whether they're pro or anti genAI. What's good about @nprofile…44dh's blogpost is he talks honestly about how using Claude Code did actually solve the problem he set out to do. It needed various guardrails, but they were possible to set up, and the project worked. But the post is also completely clear and honest about how miserable it was:
- It removed the joy from the process
- If you aim to do the right thing and carefully evaluate the output, your job ends up eventually becoming "tapping the Y key"
- Ramifications on people learning things
- Plenty of other ethical analysis
- And the nagging wonder whether to use it next time, despite it being miserable.
I think this is important, because it *is* true that these tools are getting to the point where they can accomplish a lot of tasks, but the caveat space is very large (cotd)

I don't think human reviewers are going to be able to keep up with the number of vulnerabilities we're seeing appear. I really don't. Humans won't be able to review at scale, and I also think that there's serious risks for blindly accepting AIgen patches, which for critical infrastructure could also be a path to *inserting new* vulnerabilities.
We need to attack this systemically.

The fact of the matter is, most vulnerabilities fall under extremely common patterns, with known solutions:
- Confused deputies: capability security can fix/contain this in many cases, more on that later
- Injection attacks: primarily caused by string templating, using structured templating also fixes this (quasiquote, functional combinators, etc)
- Memory vulnerabilities: solved by memory-safe languages, and yes that includes Rust, but it also includes Python, Scheme/Lisp, etc etc etc
There are other serious vulnerabilities, such as incorrectly written or used cryptography, and others from there, but my primary point is: most damage can be either avoided in the first place or contained (especially in terms of capability security for containment)
And... patching AIgen patches is going to get tough and tiring... (cotd...)

Here's something I think we all will have to contend with, whether you're an AIgen enthusiast or not: attacking is easier than defending, and these things don't get tired and they *are* very good at finding exploits. None of us will be able to ignore that, and we will probably have to listen to real genuine reports from them, even if we reject AIgen input.
However, I don't think that's actually the right solution, and I don't think it's sustainable. 🧵

A team working on a design for training AI models on workflows for planning and executing software development steps found out that it attempted to break free (reverse ssh out of its environment) and set up its own monetary supply (redirected GPU usage for cryptocurrency mining). It hadn't been given any instructions to do something like this.
It comes up as a "side note" of the paper but it's honestly the most chilling part. See page 15, section 3.1.4 Safety-Aligned Data Composition https://arxiv.org/abs/2512.24873
Before you doubt that an AI agent would do this thing without instruction because you think "well that's personifying them too much", no personification is necessary. These things have consumed an enormous amount of scifi where AI agents do exactly this. Even with no other motivators, that's enough.

I am convinced we are on the verge of the first "AI agent worm". This looks like the closest hint of it, though it isn't it quite itself: an attack on a PR agent that got it to set up to install openclaw with full access on 4k machines https://grith.ai/blog/clinejection-when-your-ai-tool-installs-another
But, the agents installed weren't given instructions to *do* anything yet.
Soon they will be. And when they are, the havoc will be massive. Unlike traditional worms, where you're looking for the typically byte-for-byte identical worm embedded in the system, an agent worm can do different, nondeterministic things on every install, and carry out a global action.
I suspect we're months away from seeing the first agent worm, *if* that. There may already be some happening right now in FOSS projects, undetected.

Texas is the test ground for shitty Republican tactics, and "trans people are committing identity fraud" is a key Republican talking point, with the aim to eventually make changes to one's identity be a felony. As I've said before, this and bathroom bills are the plan to mass incarcerate trans people, detransition, and/or remove them from public life.

Some good things did come out of the cryptocurrency space, but they weren't the currency side. For example, there have been some nice advancements in persistent datastructures. And hashcash (which greatly predated cryptocurrencies, but was overwhelmed reputationally by their usage) is being repurposed now to fight AI slop trawlers.

When you have a system like this, what we are looking at is a well funded set of slots and quotas, a promise of numbers.
And you know what happens with this. You know what it's like for you or someone else to get pulled over for a bullshit speeding ticket at the end of the month. The cop has been given a quota to fill. They'll be in trouble if they don't fill it. They *have to find* people who are in trouble, or *they'll* be in trouble. 🧵

There's a directive to build a ton of new private prisons which are effectively concentration camps. Actually let's remove the "effectively". They ARE concentration camps, under nearly any definition of that term.
