Why have kids the ability to detect when they can sleep in and then do exactly the opposite?

I have a question for all #HomeServer people.
I often hear that you started with a Pi for #HomeAssistant or other smaller stuff and a NAS.
Then many of you seem to merge everything they have into one device. My question is: Why?
This seems counterintuitive for me. When I restart my NAS my Smart Home is down? When I switch out hardware then NAS and Smart Home are down.
What's the big benefit putting Home Assistant for example on a NAS/Server instead of just keeping the Pi? For me that's a clear case for separation of concerns. But maybe I miss something.

I still think em is not the right unit to define letter-spacing in #CSS.
It's based on the height of an upper case letter in the currently used font. We're working horizontally with letter-spacing.
For this reason I work with the ch unit here for years now and the results are feeling much better and especially more predictable.
Am I missing something or why is it that the majority seems to stick with em? I mean ch exists in all major browsers for 12 years now.
(For clarity: The ch unit is based on the character 0 in the currently used font)

Because they need this for multiple cases. To look for devices in local networks they can work with. Also for detecting nearby Bluetooth devices. This message is so poorly designed that I often see support questions that could easily be answered with "allow local networks access".
Took me a while to realize why I only were able to access my NAS or Home Assistant in Safari. I disallowed Chrome/Edge to scan the local network. So it wasn't able to access IP addresses from there.

Looking for a platform to track books. (Kinda like Questlog.app)
No tracking, no ads, no "Pro" account (it's fucking numbers in a relational database that costs nothing, why are you forcing a payment? Make it voluntarily and people will do it).
I just would like to select a book, mark it as "Reading right now" and if I finished it, want to mark it as it. Bonus for a "want to read" list.
Alternatively: An API with all books with localized book titles so I can build it myself. 😅

You can attach files to a prompt. So I usually put in the file that I need the test for, the empty test file for the new tests (it helps when it knows there aren't any tests for this yet) and an existing test file, so it has a reference how you write tests usually.
I also always specify the used framework including the version and the used testing framework including the version.
If one aspect is especially important for me, I mention this.
For tests around date functions I always mention it should keep edge cases in mind. That was something that helped me yesterday, as I wanted to get the first Monday of the month but if today is this day, take the first Monday of the next month.
Because of my focus on this function it tested the 1st July of 2024, which is a Monday. My function picked the 8th July instead of the 5th August.
I fixed the error myself, but thanks to the test I never would've wrote I was able to find it.

Finding a small error you just can't see after 4 hours of coding is much easier with Copilot. Or refactoring a Option API component from Vue.js to Composition API. Monkey work and stuff like that. Stuff you just don't want to do a 4000th time.
And for testing. Writing tests is something it got really good recently helping me to find an error yesterday in my code that I didn't have found otherwise as I wouldn't have thought about this specific test it wrote for me.
But production code from nothing? Nope. That's my job and I can do that much much better and faster.

As someone that uses Copilot while work sometimes, that's actually a pretty good representation of it. If you aren't able to implement the feature completely on your own, Copilot isn't helping, it's hindering you.
Every single request I send to Copilot is followed by "No, you got something wrong. Here look at this …"
The sad part is, not every developer has this knowledge. I do this for about 19 years now. I know exactly what I have to do and Copilot just saves me some time with monkey work. But people actually trust it. People build businesses with it. And then they hit the wall really hard.
I wish all these providers would be more open about this, claiming "70-80% of the results are plain wrong. The remaining 20-30% still need small fixes". That would set expectations right.
Copilot can be useful. It can speed up the work. But only if you know exactly what you do. Otherwise it's crippling your project and your ability to get better as a developer.

Compound words are still the best feature of the German language.
You can say a word, that probably never ever said and everyone understands and it makes sense.
I just said "Hochleistungsheißluftfriteuse" and it makes sense. I love it.
It's my native language and I'm 35, but I still appreciate it at least once a week.

I get called out here because I say #Pixelfed is a mess.
That's a bit weird. Objectively it's an unfinished product with missing features, missing UI and UX polish and even @npub1xsv…q6he says the current web interface isn't good and he's working on something new.
We want Pixelfed to be not only an alternative to bigger platforms but to be the best choice. Shouldn't we be open then about things that don't work properly or are implemented poorly?
Defending Dan because he does most of the work on his own isn't what helps anyone. Being aggressive towards people that point out problems isn't helpful at all too.
Don't pretend Pixelfed is without errors. Don't pretend the current state is good.
It's an okayish start but there is a really long way to make it a good product.
But it will never become something good if we don't point out that the current state is a mess. Even if you probably could argue that the wording is a bit harsh.
As a developer for 18 years myself I can say you putting on white gloves when criticizing a project will don't move anything. So don't act like we're in Kindergarten here.

Yes it talks about spanish, which is a completely different learning experience. But the point is clear.
Duolingo can(!) help you learning a language. But Duolingo alone will not help you to master a language. But that was clear from the beginning.
I guess the general consensus that Duolingo might be useless is because people think/believe it's a 100% solution. But that was never my idea of Duolingo. It was more like a kickstarter to get into a learning habit.

#Duolingo currently has an discount for 5,99€/month if I pay for a whole year. I always thought that 5-6€/month is a fair price for this, so it's tempting.
But I use Duolingo only for 25 days now, so I don't know if I want to use it this long. I still don't have an idea if it helps me in any way to learn Japanese or if it's just a waste of time.
Any real life experience here from my followers?

CSS Anchor positioning sucked the fun out of development for me currently.
No idea why position-try-fallbacks isn't working and I'm too exhausted to find out.
Maybe in a few weeks or month there are resources that show reasons why it gets ignored. But for now I have no energy left to fight with this.
I guess development on Questlog is paused for the rest of the year. An easy and quick addition was supposed to make it easier to use. But I've spent so much time on this small "feature" already that I just have no energy left for anything other.
Sorry for everyone that is still waiting for better Reviews and other bigger features…

Actually I am not really afraid what happens to me when I die. But I have a wife and a child.
I don't want them to suffer. I don't want them to struggle without me.
Their life would go on and they would find a way sooner or later. But the first months would be extremely hard for them.
That's the reason why I am still afraid to die.

I'm feeling "a bit" exhausted after 2¼ years where pretty much every conversation I have is about what has to be done (at home and at work) and cold stuff.

One thing that is really annoying when trying to get away from Google as a work Browser: The shortcut CMD+SHIFT+C.
In Chrome, Firefox and Safari the shortcut does exactly the same. Opening the Dev-Tools and instantly start the picker mode.
Arc? Copies the current URL. If I change the Shortcut to at least open the Dev-Tools I have to press it CMD+SHIFT+C to start the selection. But the worst part is, I can't use this shortcut directly on the page, I always have to focus the Dev-Tools again. So its always CMD+SHIFT+C twice…
In Vivaldi the shortcut isn't used outside of the Dev-Tools. But I can, like Arc, set it to CMD+SHIFT+C. But then the handling is exactly the same as in Arc…
Sadly I need the Chromium Dev Tools and some Extensions, so Firefox and Safari are off the table here. With the latest developments Firefox is off the table anyways…
That's just so frustrating. It's just one Shortcut, but I use it so extremely often, that I depend on it…
And if someone recommends Brave, they get blocked. No…

Don't know how it's outside of Germany but here the known good Hosters are all-inkl, Netcup, Ubernauten and Manitu.
The term it's advertised here is just Webhosting. But it's probably safe to search for "Webhosting PHP".
It should be between 2-5€/month for most projects.

They overlap, but the terms are not synonym.
For example.
Liking a post in Mastodon in Ivory for iOS is straight forward. Tap the star icon. That's usability.
The subtle haptic feedback and animation that confirm this action are user experience. Especially the haptic feedback as it only happens when the server replied successfully.
Both has nothing to do with usability or UI, but are pure UX. But positioning the icon clearly is Usability, UI and also UX.
