This is not a set up, this actually happened, I'm so sorry. Don't read on if you're not a 13-year-old schoolboy, or at least have an equivalent level of humour.
If you leave iPlayer running in a background tab, eventually it pauses itself. I forgot I'd left it running (muted) after doing the Spandau Ballet screengrab earlier, and flipped back to that tab just now to find it had freeze-framed like this.

Well every day really is a school day.
It's over 40 years since Madness's song "Michael Caine" was released, and of course like every charts-obsessed 80s teenager I know that song inside out, back to front and upside down.
But embarrassingly it took until today for me to find out that the song is not actually about everyone's favourite Sarf London actor but was in fact written by the group's Chas Smash about IRA informers having to change their names & identities and go into hiding.

Slightly less surprising to find the Nutty Boys doing a song about the Troubles when you find that Smash's real name was Cathal (which he anglicised to Carl) and he grew up in both London & Belfast.

After our journey on the steam train, we popped into Bury Art Gallery for a bit of a mooch around and to get out of the cold/wet. And they had this absolutely marvelous pair of pictures, created over a century apart from each other.
Both are entitled "The Cruel Sister".
The first is an oil on canvas painting by John Faed, undated but preceding 1897 when it was gifted to the gallery.
The second is a digital photograph on canvas by Jez Dolan, created in 2017.
The more you look, the better they both get.

When I moved out of London over a decade ago, there was some move towards having wifi availability in the deep tube lines, but there were still plenty of places where smartphones became dumbphones when you were in the tunnels.

I was just looking up David Blunkett on Wikipedia, for reasons.
I knew he'd been blind from birth, but bloody hell this is quite some opening paragraph to the "Early life" section:

We had our kitchen done last year. The first design that the kitchen company produced for us had two ovens.
"There's only the two of us" we said, "and with the air fryer & the microwave we hardly make use of one oven. We definitely don't need two."
"Oh but it's very fashionable at the moment" they told us, "and it looks better".
Suffice to say we didn't stand for any of that nonsense (or extra expense!) and ended up with just one oven.
Now today Mrs LT has pointed to a house she's seen for sale just down the road from us that has three ovens. THREE!
And it's not even Downton Abbey, just a 4-bed suburban house. When on earth will they ever make use of all that cooking capability?

Absolutely outstanding work from whoever the mayor of West Yorkshire has engaged to create maps.
Supposedly a map of the proposed Northern Powerhouse Rail upgrades, this seems to show two new places called Warrington appearing somewhere in east Cheshire or north Derbyshire, has shifted Manchester Piccadilly to just south of Sheffield, and created a new Hull just north of York.

I got a #TRMNL e-ink display wotsit thingy (apologies for getting all technical there) not long ago, and now I'm getting round to setting it up.
One of the nice things is that as well as all the dashboards provided by the company, there are a load provided by the community that you can just load up, customise & use.
But I was shocked -- SHOCKED I tell you -- to discover that so far nobody has created a "When Is Bins?" dashboard.
I think I have found my latest project!

**Still** no snow here, although the outdoor thermometer was reading -6.7 °C when we got up.
So of course it's a grand day for pulling on our warmest outdoor walking gear and heading over to the Peak District.
We're experienced enough winter hikers that we know our limits: we'll be staying well away from any moor tops or anywhere that the footpaths are completely obscured by snow. But we're hoping for some glorious winter scenery in the valleys and the lower hills.

There was an advert on TV just now for the new film Hamnet.
Among the 5-star reviews and other praises for the film they included the words "Best film of the year". And then informed us "In cinemas from January 9th".
While I'm sure it's a fantastic bit of movie-making I can't help feeling that given the relevant year hasn't even started it, it's just a wee bit presumptious to say it's the best.

We're at a pizza place and the waiter did the usual thing of asking the couple next to us "do you have any allergies?" and one of the people at that table replied "hay fever" and while yes I suppose that's technically a correct answer it's probably not what the waiter was expecting to hear 😀

Ooh, they're very nice. I don't know what the US Post Office (or whoever prints / designs American stamps) policies are, but here in the UK the Royal Mail produces multiple themed stamp issues per year. These are my favourites from the last few months.

One of the things about not having kids is that all (well, most) of these things have passed me by.
For example I am aware from parents I know that a few years back there was an annoying song about a mummy shark or something, but as far as I know I've never heard it. Unlike my parent friends who have it seared irrevocably into their brains!

Every so often I'm reminded how bloody difficult it is to come and live in this country.
We were due an electrician to visit today but earlier he messaged my wife to say he couldn't make it and could he instead come "around tea time tomorrow".
My wife, who did not grow up in this country, asked me "when is tea time?" to which I replied "probably about 4-ish".
So then she said "But I thought tea time meant lunch time" and then the conversation went that although dinner time might mean lunch time and supper time might mean dinner time, tea time is always tea time even though it's highly unlikely anyone would be drinking tea. Unless it's afternoon tea which can be at any time but is definitely not tea time.
Bloody hell England, you don't make it easy do you!

Great analysis. I don't know who Dan Sanchez is but he has obviously thought very long and hard about the problem and decided that you can't be a trillion-dollar company without owning a webmail service.
And that's it. That's his proposition. Never mind all the impossible culture-clash problems you've just mentioned, just "buy Proton" and then they'll be the new Google. 🤦
