Marcus The Board Gamer

All about board gaming and board games. Especially medium to heavy euro games.

Just imagine if it was possible to make a version where the luck was somewhat mitigated. But no, no such design philosophy exists. /s

That wasn’t my problem with the game. I’m fine with cut throat interaction and take that. What I’m not a fan of is spending hours with a hand of crap cards unable to do almost anything. Watching others with good hands of cards romp to victory (and I say this as someone who likes tactical games where your hand of cards can make you zig and zag your way though the game)

I’ve not played that many of Cole’s games. Root is OK(if overrated), but Arcs? Oh boy. My one four player game of THAT left me not wanting to ever touch the game again. It’s a marmite game for sure.

As a “Civil Servant” (let’s leave it at that 😉), so someone who deals with the public purse, approving day rates of £1000/day isn’t unreasonable. That’s what nearly €1200. So no I wouldn’t say €1300 is fine for your expertise.

If you want to fly home from Edinburgh, and it’s a much nicer city than London—sorry London fans—and if you can drive. I’d hire a car and take in a tour of the best places between London and Edinburgh. The UKs best parts are the countryside and ancient history. So go visit the South Downs, Bannau Brycheiniog & Eryri national parks (because Cymru is the best part of the UK), the Peak District, and the Lake District or the Yorkshire Dales.

It’s because CPU and GPUs have only been getting faster by throwing more and more power at them. That’s why the PS5 is so large. See also; computer GPUs being stupidly massive.

2026-01-23 12:56:13 UTC

Yeah. The whole system is skewed. If I was of a younger generation I’d be really quite angry and want change. FPTP needs to go. It’s archaic.
Hopefully we see a shift towards folks like the Green Party now that 16 year olds have the vote (because crappy state pension amount to one side, government policies should favour the younger generation. They sadly do not)

2026-01-23 12:53:03 UTC

- reply

Also; with housing based wealth it’s generally tied up in said asset. How do you fairly tax a pensioner on the value of that house? They probably will have lived in the house for the last 50-60 years, a house purchased for a few thousand £ back then. It’s now worth over a million, but they still only have the state pension as income. Not much headroom for a big tax bill when you’re on £230/week.

I’m not clear on how a system ‘skewed to benefit one generation’ leads to one of the lowest pensions in Europe? We have a lot of pensioners who are choosing between heating and eating. More of those than overly wealthy pensioners.
(Side note. Other non-benefits are also ridiculously low and yes I agree they lack any tripple lock and don’t have political clout like pensions. It’s a wider issue for sure)

2026-01-23 11:54:09 UTC

- reply

If it’s unaffordable, why are better pensions in Europe affordable? Europe has freedom of movement so *easier* migration.

2026-01-21 13:18:54 UTC

- reply

More two than one, yeah. But I don’t disagree with the first point (and I’d advocate for a tax system like the one in Scotland)

2026-01-21 07:33:41 UTC

- reply

If the triple lock is “unaffordable” why do we have one of the worst pensions in Europe? Anyone from government want to explain this? They want to explain how the Netherlands, for example, has a much higher pension?
Or is it as usual we in the UK are being misled and ripped off.

This isn’t a problem of diagnosis <insert the graph charting the rise in left handedness after it was no longer suppressed by forcing kids to use their right hand here> but a problem of how it’s funded. As in money is thrown at private providers who only care about profit. The dismantling of the state that would—and should—support SEND is the problem. Bringing that back is a problem because governments seem to be obsessed with cutting public spending for some reason.

There’s a list of terms that grinds my gears in board gaming. The main culprit is ‘sandbox game’ because it can’t be a sandbox and still be a game. Now I’m going to stop because talking about that term makes my blood pressure rise. 😅
‘Multiplayer solitaire’ is second on that list. If there’s people and you’re engaging with them you’re not playing solitaire. The flip side of that coin is when ‘player interaction’ is used to mean ‘take that’ or ‘conflict’ in games.

One thing about work that isn’t going to help those with mental illness is the sheer amount of shitty bosses out there. Being pile-driven into the ground in the name of ‘productivity’ will do more damage to a persons mental health than working would potentially improve it. Until workers are treated fairly it’s a rigged game.

Resiliency costs money and doesn’t make profit. “Cheaper” to risk taking a hit with a disaster…right up until there is a disaster. Then you’ve got to ride it out, find someone to blame and go back to considering resiliency a cost.

Threads is doing downhill since the Twitter algorithm exodus. Well more downhill. It had a brief period before the rage and engagement baiters gamed the Meta algorithm.
Never got the argument Mastodon is hard. You sign up on a website. I reckon most of these people’s actual arguments against Mastodon are the fact they can’t farm engagement via manipulation of the algorithm, because there isn’t one!
