I always wanted one, but they were out of reach. My 15C was neat, but I lusted for a 16C. I accepted the Casio CM-100 "Computer Math" as a compromise. It's a little hard to find but a lot cheaper. It has very good bitwise functions, and I love this era of Casio design.

Maybe not willy-nilly, but vibration will cause an IC to unseat from a dual-wipe socket faster than a machined socket. Another problem I've noticed with wiper-style sockets is that the contacts are flimsy and can be crushed if the registration between the pin and wiper is off. There will be a weak or no connection, the socket is ruined, and the fault isn't immediately visible. I'm not arguing for machined sockets. They are often a pain in the ass.

Their point is they provide a much more secure connection than dual- or single-wipers. But because they deform, they aren't great for chip reinsertion. Breaking pins is just a bonus.

This is a pretty neat algorithm. It selects a random subset of size k from the set of integers [1, n]. I'd normally do this by shuffling the set and selecting the first k values, but this is more efficient ... and not remotely intuitive.

Yeah, that seems very wrong. Apple II should be about 8.3 ms on average, strictly based on the time it takes an NTSC signal to paint the CRT. The time it takes for a key press to put a character into display RAM is about 10 microseconds (10 cycles at 1.023 MHz).

On real hardware connected to a color TV, it's technically possible to suppress the color burst signal, but it is not designed to do that. You have to synchronize continuously running code to the video signal's horizontal blanking interval. During the front porch or breezeway (before the color reference burst), switch to text mode for a few cycles, then switch back to graphics mode during the back porch (before the HBL ends). Getting in sync is the tricky part.

This is huge. The Supreme Court of the United States has declined to take up an appeal regarding generative AI. This upholds the findings of multiple lower courts and affirms that AI-generated content cannot be copyrighted. This is good news for actual creatives and bad news for commercial AI use.
