I have long felt frustrated by articles/videos that say some PSX games that used prerendered backgrounds also had a depth map for occlusion, because they never elaborate and I know the PSX has no depth buffer
But I think I figured it out. They probably compared some coarse depth value (probably the character's position depth) against the depth buffer and generated a mask texture on the CPU and then used the PSX's mask bit for occlusion
Or at least that's how I would probably do it if I had to

snprintf can safely format a string into a target buffer
it can also, without writing anything, tell you the size needed to safely format a string into a target buffer
however, this being C, there is (as far as i can find) no helper method to use snprintf to find the size of the buffer you need, allocate it, and then write the formatted string, unless you make it yourself
this is great since writing a wrapper function like this is extremely easy to fuck up, leading to buffer overruns

new (bi)weekly block game thread cause doors are done! \o/
not only are doors 2 blocks tall now, there's a generic system to create up to 16x16x16 multi-block structures just by specifying the positions and blocks in json
anyway, doors make a huge difference to the game's feel. with doors and tables and such these shacks are starting to feel like real houses

i have been doing a lot of research on LOD in voxel engines and i've come to the conclusion that aside from making sure my world generation can generate lower detail versions of chunks independently i don't actually care to solve that particular problem any time soon
(also it is incredibly hard to find any screenshots let alone videos of anyone looking at player built structures using mods like distant horizons so i can scrutinize the quality of this approach)

so anyway if someone you sub to collabs on a video in this way it will just shove a channel you dont even recognize into your subscriptions feed. amazing ux, truly excellent, no notes

hey fedi programmer folks, this isn't urgent but i'm going to have to store my block game's world data in some kind of acid compliant database at some point. do you have any recommendations? it must be a file-based database, obviously. and game data doesn't usually neatly conform to the boring numbered rows with named columns table design of traditional databases for websites and stuff
i think ideally i'd just be able to store raw binary data

@nprofile…gvnm that's the version i started on and i have a blender project with the workspace all set up the way i like it. i tried upgrading once and ran into a bug where after i laid out the entire video i couldn't export it successfully so i reverted to the known working version and have been scared to upgrade ever since >_>
