House Cow Keeping tales.....
Had a lovely trip to Wales to one of my housecow mentees to lend a hand with their first, & their Jersey heifer's first calf & milking. Needing a little moral support as they worked their way through the first few days post-calving mama cow Florence had a mild case of mastitis in one of her quarters. We had been chatting & sharing videos via Whatsapp but decided they’d be happier if I would visit in person for more practical help. The keepers had already done a fab job of massaging and patiently milking out by hand at least 3 times a day. Hopefully Florence is on the other side of it now and as you can see she’s had a gorgeous heifer calf called Bella (holsteinX) and both mum and babe are doing well. First time calvings can be scary & overwhelming for cowkeepers before during and after the whole process but there are rewards if only momentary & I get my kicks out of standing back to watch the keepers soak up those rare few precious good moments.
I aim to always be on the other end of the phone for my mentees, no matter how small the problem may seem, it’s always worth making the call.
