I'd like to comment on the common "AI is just a tool" thing: I'm a woodworker by training & that means a lot of machines - but almost every craftsperson knows how to do their job with hand tools, or "lesser" machines.
Similarly, a writer can write without a text editor - just as well, only slower.
If loss of a tool = loss of your skill & knowledge, then that tool isn't an asset, it's a liability. You're signing over your ability to do business to whoever sells & maintains that tool.

OK, I did it - currently just starting the process of re-installing almost 100 #Garageband plugins 😝
I did do one fuckup that could have been major; I'd saved some setups in some of those plugins - & GB itself - which I forgot to save out as files & keep. However, most of them were guitar amp models & since I'm still not good at that but getting better, rebuilding them probably isn't the worst thing that could happen 😂

@nprofile…args Reminds me of a story about the search for life on Mars: Allegedly James Lovelock (of GAIA fame) was one of the scientists asked to define the search parameters & he said "You don't need to go to Mars; you can see from Earth there's no life", referring to how an ecosystem of life will change its appearance. Of course that's not exactly the kind of answer you want if you're trying to secure funding for a Mars mission so it wasn't included in the final report 😝

Matthew Christopher does much more than just beatifully document decay.
In covering the history of buildings & the people who lived & worked in them, he is a cronicler & historian of American culture on so many levels. In the Frankford Arsenal story, for example, we get a glimpse into the culture of what I think of as malicious privatization (not sure there's another kind though)....

So, status of my #deGoogling efforts as of this morning: I managed to successfully move my custom email domain to #StartMail - meanwhile, Tuta is entirely down & I can't access my calendar (or the email associated with it).
Seems I made the right choice, at least between those two 😁 here's hoping Start will add a calendar soon 🤞

Huh... seems like all my #digital things that have some version of that "here's where you were last time you opened this" functionality - from laptop OS to mobile browser to music-app - have started just retaining some random previous state, anywhere from earlier that day to days or weeks ago.
And all at the same time.
It's almost like our digital realm is too brittle to survive.

Just occurred to me: There's something wrong with people moving to #Bluesky "because all my friends are there". Either they aren't, because the platform is new & most people BY FAR aren't there yet, or your friends group is unsettlingly narrow & homogenous.
The only way the #SocialMedia experience can happen again where not just everybody I knew, but also almost everybody I'd like to know, was on Facebook is if #interop becomes norm. Like phones & email. As a platform it was a one-time deal.

It's great that you take these dives, @npub15x4…3p3l - but I have a legit question: Why are we still talking about #Xitter?
Does the quality of content there really matter, any more than the quality of content on Truth or whatever other MAGA echo chambers still exist?
Maybe some think Xitter isn't beyond saving; a lot of us had good times there & getting back to that is alluring, but I think it's completely over - there's no way back from here.
