The bank froze one of my accounts for what amounts to a bureaucratic over site that can probably be fixed up in five minutes. I've now crossed over the one hour mark on hold.
I worked at a cable company many years ago and the CRTC monitored customer service hold times, I'm thinking whomever the bank regulator is needs to do the same.

Data centers in space is ridiculous. The biggest challenges in DC ops are climate control, network connectivity and power. So you want to put a DC in space where temperatures fluctuate to extremes not found on earth, where connectivity is basically line of site microwave and power is a question mark? Not to mention to get your iron into space costs millions per kilo. I really don't get why it's even proposed.

Seems like new people are arriving via #forkiverse. My biggest Mastodon tip is follow everyone. Not just ha ha ha ya follow everyone, no I mean follow everyone you can. With no algorithm you need content for your feeds. You can always cutaway the accounts you don't like after the fact. You have way more safety tools here than on any other platform so follow en masse.

This is a very loose equivalent but reminded me non the less. We used to teach kids to play hockey on a full sheet of ice. We then realized for small people to skate those distances was insane. Especially for tiny goalies to cover a full sized net was crazy. Now we play half rink games with special nets. Respectfully, you're relatively insulated as our region is somewhat resistant to macro economic swings. It's why there's so much safe harbour investment here.
Many non rich people are exposed to the market but only rich people influence the market through movement of large blocks of capital. When that capital flees the market and credit freezes there are profound real world impacts.

The fediverse is the last safe information harbour on the Internet.
Twitter, Facebook, Tick/Tock, etc all promote enragement for engagement which is the bedrock of today's authoritarianism.
If you're on BlueSky you've already seen how the new boss is same as the old boss when it comes to centralized control and censorship. There's also questions around where the moneys coming from. They may already be soft captured.
Today more than ever the world needs decentralized social media.

That's the problem, reach. Governments should absolutely take their data sovereignty more seriously and the fediverse is the only answer for that in social media.. But... The real life problem is we simply don't capture enough eyeballs to make it practical. If we had 1/10 the reach of Facebook or Twitter you could start making a case. 2) Basically fedi isn't a great broadcast platform due to the lack of algorithm and large parts of it are hostile to even benevolent corporate interests. I always thought however fedi is perfect for outreach and would lend itself well to government and NGO's. Especially with issues around social media and data sovereignty.

1) The main roadblock is reach and analytics. During the great migration I offered to Sheppard organizations on to their own instances for free. I had no takers. The social media/marketing managers had no way of measuring eyeballs and the total MAU of the fediverse, even at that time wasn't enough to justify the effort. I pitched them HARD, because it's something I believe in. I applaud you for putting in the effort as I think it's essential but those are the roadblocks I faced.

I recently connected with an old friend in the exploration field with a lot of contacts in the mining industry. He says Europe is rushing in to buy Canadian aluminum which, because of abundance of hydro electricity is still produced cheaper than China. The USA is severely damaging its manufacturing sectors by making the raw inputs from Canada too expensive and other countries are taking advantage. These tarrifs are beyond stupid.

I don't think people fully grasp what a victory the CUSMA carve out is when it comes to tariffs. 80-90% of our exports to the US remain tariff free. It allows Trump to blovate about how he's tough with Canada while effectively doing almost nothing. I thought the whole Greenland thing was a joke to be honest. But now Don Jr is there on what's obviously a scouting trip and Trump continues to Signal to the press his intention to take the territory.
It deeply worries me because if he's successful Canadian sovereignty will be in real jeopardy.
