Like I said i can't speak for these people in particular. I also don't trust that the "right people" were pardoned but that's not my call to make. Generally speaking I don't think there should have needed be pardons because they shouldn't have been in prison. It was his policy in his 2016 term that put them there in the first place.
If all you were able to convict someone of is a conspiracy - like literally a statement of a guy talked about doing X but the rest cannot be proven, why is someone in prison? That's just a blanket. Sure almost all of these were plea bargains but if you had concrete evidence someone committed a crime why is talking about it even on the list of things able to be bargained, reduce the sentence.
Id have something different to say if they said - removing X equipment on personally owned pickup trucks is illegal **because** Y. They cannot they simply say well touching anything on our car is _probably_ illegal so don't do it. They won't say "well all that matters is that X quantity of Y must not be present at the tailpipe".
it's generally known among the community that such emissions components exist and removing them will trigger alarms in the ECU preventing operation without software workarounds. But there is no clear reason why. They're calling us bootleggers without the prohibition part. Which btw these "regulations" don't apply to them. They will arrest you and put you in the back of an SUV without emissions equipment because they know it's too unreliable. Hell they will even show up to your shop with a license and ask you to remove the equipment yourself, but you so much as work on a modified vehicle owned by a civilian without reporting it - straight to jail.
And don't even get me started on "penalties", "culpability multiplier", and "inflation surcharges" for non-criminal cases.

I cannot find a single un-polaraized opinionated article on this but you'll have to take my word that trump pardoned fellons convicted by the FBI and EPA of "violating the clean air act". Most were convicted under his previous administrations "Diesel Compliance Initiative" not long after making the EPA part of the DOJ giving them guns.
I can't speak for the people pardoned (nor can I really find any true information on these people) but the information you find will blanket label these people as criminals, charge them with a felony of 5 up to years in jail for having a chat at a diner about "taking that damn dpf off my work truck it cost too much" (im serious most of these guys including at least one that was pardoned was charged with CONSPIRACY to tamper with emissions equipment). The only people I know personally that served a prison sentence were charged of conspiracy.

Like bitcoin/crypto and other administrative state markets the EPA does not release information including emissions targets that allow the aftermarket to comply. There is no regulation - you just can't modify your vehicle. They're supposed to allow you to submit a "reasonable basis" claim after being investigated but they aren't obligated to look at it, but you can try to fight it in court - except that the EPA has never lost a court case on consumer vehicle emissions.
There are plenty of guys who took this too far by deliberately removing emissions equipment despite knowing the would probably be prosecuted (you get a culpability line item btw), or turning up the smoke. Simply irresponsible, disrespectful sure. But guess what, there is no definition for a defeat device, there never has been and there never will be because it's the only magic wand the EPA has to put anyone they don't like in prison.
If you want to have an argument over greenhouse gases, carbon emissions etc. Give me numbers, give me quantities, give me something to work with. I'm not a regulate me harder daddy person, but you can have both. Don't leave it to the administrative state to decide what's a bad greenhouse gas and a good one. Because we still can't seem to decide (as a state) what a greenhouse gas actually is and which ones are "the problem" (greenhouse gas stuff was just changed again and trump is being blamed for it.

#asknostr Any new web clients I should try that aren't obviously vibed in a weekend? Id like a more personalized feel. Aesthetics don't mean much to me, I just care that it works well with aggressive privacy protections.
For example. I have a small whitelist of allowed relays, don't allow 3rd party scripts or fonts etc. Most bulky clients are actually unusable for me like they are just a blank screen. The common JS frameworks for nostr also explode when you block relays they just seem to get stuck in loops and hog resources without returning any results.
Getting away away from the twitter-like UI is a plus. Another plus is that I can host it myself, most of y'all use cloudflare or vercel and I'm not on an approved IP so probably can't get to it.

Does that stat include - I have a cousin that's a roofer, one is an electrician, one that was a carpenter, an auto mechanic, a mason and I think at least one does plumbing work? (true statement) So i'd pay them to do the work because most labor jobs are seasonal so they have off seasons, family pays family to keep them.

Yes, I agree housing should generally be considered an expense. But _housing_ will always be required by humans. Humans see value in shelter and comfort. So maybe instead of an individual house, _housing_ could be seen as an asset maybe.
That's my definition, something that has as close to universal value simply be existing.
It's not an INVESTMENT as it cannot generate ROI (except in the case of renting as you suggested).

Investopedia: An asset is anything, tangible or intangible, that has economic value to its owner or could have economic value in the future. - Which I would agree with on it's face.
I've made the argument that it's impossible for houses to do anything but lose absolute value, they may remain or increase relative to their markets. A house is an asset to me because it has a universal inherent value providing shelter, comfort and safety. It must degrade over time because it's built partially from consumables, it requires upkeep in the form of labor directly or indirectly.
Trucks and heavy equipment can* be an asset. Cars (classic cars especially) are with art imo. They don't fit my definition of universal qualities the majority of humans see as requirements of life.

Like you have to have $100k + inflation yoy + ROI. Assets (except in the case where the market shifts) can't return a profit they just sit there looking cute, investments are the only vehicles that can yield a return.

Sure, but just because you run a relay doesn't mean anyone can actually discover it. On users/clients would want to use outbox model etc. I say that as I'm generally against the outbox model and sharing my usage patterns with a random relay. I prefer the model of 2-3 good relays you like and trust and being done.
The other issue is spam and junk. The more relays you have in your client the more garbage you're going to see. Keep the list small and to those who do heavy spam prevention and it's less of an issue.
For example. Primal and damus as read relays is horrible, it was ruining my feed. Filter their content through other relays who run spam prevention and it's nice and happy.

That statement is not to disprove "religion" I don't see any Christian denomination as a different religion (nuance with everything...). And my personal opinion is that anyone that does is missing the point. Have your church, ceremony and whatnot, but imo the most important takeaway of Jesus's life was that it's not required for salvation.
I'm saying that you're missing the point of Jesus's teaching if you can't just point to a fallible human example and say - this guy can be saved too. You're going to fuck up in life, there is NO SHAME in making mistakes. Catholicism leaves that part out on the surface and in the schools.

Yeah divorce is rarely mentioned in our books. Yes I understand marriage happens once, period. But I think that's the handwavey part they never talk about. It's "well there is no reason to talk about remarriage because IFF you're married that's it thats the end" It would have just been nice in a secular world for someone to state the obvious.
To me a large part of catholicism (again taught in my schools), is, we don't talk about _what happens if_ it's always _it can't happen_. I think it often leads to this idea that catholicism is strict. No one explains what happens if you do the wrong thing. We don't talk about it. We just don't make mistakes. Then people are like "mkayy lets just talk about _starting over_ or lets try this whole catholic thing out again maybe youll get it this time"
Yes we talk about repentance, but I think people _rightfully_ argue that's too much ceremony. Jesus worked and taught in an imperfect world, he talked about it openly. He talked about mistakes, he talked about humanity.

Agreed but just wanted to say that what we have now or at least before 2020 existed before socials. I've never really used socials outside of work or small communities until nostr. I didn't have any accounts on anything until I met a girl that set those things up for me XD
Dating is some other catastrophe. I think single men (myself included) are just opting out, our fault or not. Ladies get all the attention they need from their socials or dating apps etc. IIRC something like 5% of men on dating apps get _all_ of the attention from 90% of the women. Something like the other 95% get _none_ from that last 10%. I think that's bleeding over into real life. Hell I've had setup dates flake which is honestly entertaining.
I think there is also some maslo hierarchy too though. Like I need to be able to afford food heat and clothing, before I can date anyone to meet my standards. Lets be honest I think most men find it pretty embarrassing to ask the girl to split pricing, pay for me, or meet me somewhere instead of drive you.
All these independent women can make us feel pretty useless too. Some men want to be useful and it's not abnormal or insecure to say that XD

Oh and by "privilege" I think I mean maturity, understanding, fortitude, self control, commitment, etc. Stuff I'm not sure can really be taught. I think it's idealisict to assume you can have none of those things before entering marriage and they will come and people will have enough of those virtues to grow in their commitment together.
I suppose there is also the garden of Eden side to this argument too.

From the outside perspective it does seem almost _abusive_. Unfortunately I think the way Catholics are taught the sacrament of is just hand wavey. Marriage is like the least talked about sacrament in schools they just pretend it doesn't matter. That could be new age stuff or the fact that no one in my life teaching theology actually committed to marriage. I had priests, or divorced women with children out of wedlock teach us my entire childhood.
That said, id love to believe in it. I love to believe marriage as a holy sacrament that it's possible, but I think it _can_ go against human nature, or requires some level of privilege (and I hate to use that word) that doesn't always exists in marriages. Like teenagers, or pregnancies or other things of that nature.

Right now... I might go as far as to say Natural Law is the only law... I truely believe culture is upstream from politics and therefor government. Corruption is an outlier, a big one nonetheless, but it's almost mutually exclusive imo.
I draw the line somewhere around a large state is required, and balk against the idea of questioning it. Even people my age won't consider the idea "What if the state wasn't there". The irrational fear that all of a sudden rational people will wake up and choose violence and rape your children in the street before sundown. Like have you considered the possibility that maybe _we as a people_ the ones who make up society actually have the _power_ here. Our lives aren't suddenly going to fall apart if the state _as it exists_ just disappeared. We always recover in times of freedom.
People, tribes, communities will still organize as they have always done. Recognizing that (at least our) government does not function even close to how you think it does, or how they tell us it does is what I harp on. Realizing that our wealth has been extracted to reduce our access to resources, to become more dependent (whether intentional or not, that's the reality) on the state is important too. The state became the safety blanket and loss aversion prevents that from changing.
IMO The state (Deceleration of Independence in particular) was supposed to protect natural law, full stop. You violate natural law, we don't agree, action can be taken, you no longer align with our values, gtfo. That goes for the state, more than it does the people - for historical reasons imo, ask Jefferson and Hamilton. So I don't know what I am, but blindly accepting that things should be the way they are and we shouldn't question them is a problem imo. Because what we have now is not what we were sold. I don't believe in deconstruction or whatever the socialists called the idea of destroying tradition.
Same goes for capitalism. Suggesting that our economic reality in the west is _capitalism_ **and** that it needs to be replaced is full of bias. My argument is simple psychological observation - given a "should" or "aught", when the rule enforcers aren't looking, what are people going to do in larger quantities. Optimize for that. Turns out goods will be traded with subjective pricing to each party depending on their intentions, there will be competition to sell goats for cows. They will just do this when left alone and ungoverned.

Yes you will find this to be the case. Same with javascript and other "well documented" high level, homogeneous, toolchains. C and C++ are anarchistic by design. The fact that it's extremely verbose to operate has a sharper learning curve but flattens out dramatically. C -> compiler -> linkable machine code -> linker -> elf executable or shared library (aka a pile of text and information).
I specifically said cargo cult if you know what I mean. Yes all language maxing is cultish. That's not what I mean. The seem hell bent on reinventing what programmers have been doing for half a century and calling it novel labeling existing solutions as "bad" without explanation (or imo knowledge of why).
My honest take, is that it ends up creating noise and sentiment with their marketing, and discourages alternative discussion - because you're too dumb and will shoot yourself in the foot. And if that's the case I guess, but keep your baby-proofed room maximalist to yourself and please avoid labeling the rest of us who know what were doing with other tools.

In an effort to help probably nobody here.
Here is a rust (blehhhhh) patch for vgpu_unlock-rs that enables vgpu profiles for the GV100GL PG500-216 gpu board variant of the nvidia Tesla V100.
The -216 is a year or two newer, has higher memory clock speeds (and 250gb/s more memory bandwidth) and much cheaper than the retail pcie variant right now. You can get a 32gb card for a little over $600 on fleabay right now with a 1 year warranty that has 1166 GB/s memory bandwidth...

Venmo does without the private switch. Actually public was completely public at one point. I built a little tool the would scrape an unauthenticated json api that just dumped all public transactions. You could dump it an grep for your friends.
I think they fixed that after paypal bought them but I sent their support staff an email about it but never heard back.
Right now you can see all the dumb shit your friends send each other.

If I'm seeing the section you're talking about, they address the opposite. I feel like Id have to factor or graph it somehow that equation to confirm what you're seeing. Algebra is not my best skill.

A few important system's level security features of libnoscrypt I think don't get talked about enough.
1) Noscrypt's core library requires that the callers own the memory the library operates on. This means you have full control over the buffers passed. If using in a modern x86 based operating system, you can add advanced protections,
- like locking (mlock) to prevent secret material from being swapped to disk.
- You can force populate the TLB and page cache to avoid page faults
- You can prevent core dumps of secret data
- You can protect the region by preventing writes to it
- You can add guard pages (if not already in place by your allocator)
The list goes on, but all are useful when holding secrets in your process's memory. Reducing copies of secret data in "unprotected" pages and preventing them from leaking.
2) Noscrypt will never take control of your process. In most cases it will never even make a system call to cause a context switch (with the exception of kernel-level crypto support).
- It will not interact with your threading, or process
- In most cases it doesn't register any "lifecycle hooks" (exception of openssl > 3.5) such as thread events, process library load events or even signals.
- It will never exit(), abort(), fork() etc.
These are important for a lot of reasons in crypto - unnecessary context switches can leave cpu caches vulnerable to side channel attacks more than they already are. And taking control of your process can be bad for managed runtimes. If your using a runtime like the Beam VM (elixr), CLR (.NET), JVM (java), a native library that takes control of the process can hurt the stability and security of an application. Many vms require strict management over their resources like threads, ambient data (thread local/fiber local), events, like signals and exception handlers etc. Noscrypt treats this as a high priority, honestly I just hate when libraries crash your stuff when they could have just best-effort cleaned up and returned an error code.
3) Noscrypt core library does not dynamically allocate any memory (with the exception of the openssl backend on some operations) and uses stack allocated automatic variables for the majority of necessary operations, but limits this where possible, preferring pointers to existing memory over copies in all cases. All important stack structures are initialized before use and wiped on best-effort when no longer in use.
Stack pages have the advantage of being committed, in the working set, and almost always in TLB. So they are very unlikely (or even impossible on some systems) to trigger a page fault.

btw as a kid 100*f ambient highs were very uncommon but happened during heat waves. I'm not sure we've had over 100*f actual gauge temperature in a few years or surely not as frequently as we did when I was a kid.

You also gotta remember our media lies to us so bad that every single day our weather breakes some record. Exactly 10 years ago this month i was working outdoors in 100*f ambient with a 95% humidity. It was like panting in a sauna. We had emergency alerts on the radio for air quality warnings. I hasn't been that hot since, yet on like Saturday we broke some imaginary record for 89* in june.
They just make shit up. This past winter "broke records" for coldest and most precipitation blah blah. In 2015 i was driving my sky high pickup truck through bumper level, about 32" of snow in negative temperatures.
They have this new "real feel" thing they like to scare everyone with. They say its some index + humidity can feel like X. Well that's all they use now to measure hot days so now they tell our your concrete will melt at 115* but it's actually 90*f with a breeze and you can stand in the shade without breaking a sweat.
Its like real inflation to CPI. They can just make up a number and shout it at us on TV.

No i mean it's a limitation of LLMs. They read tokens they produce tokens. They cannot remember anything. The context is your chat. What you see is basically what you get. Thinking tokens are generally discarded (or at least used to be) regardless thinking tokens are not a useful part of the system but that's a topic for another time.
I'm simply saying context is just a transcript. If the Men In Black wiped your memory, then handed you 3 paragraphs of what you did 5 minutes before then you were asked to explain why you did what it said you did on paper, it would be a scientific impossibility for you to explain it.

I think it's still worth recognizing that every message on every turn is new to a model. If you ask it what it was thinking previously, it has to invent what it "thought" (since thinking is not real, "reasoning" is sort of). You're asking it to reason on the past by presenting it with a transcript.
Just something worth remembering imo.

That's what I keep running into. And people keep thinking that the equipment will last that long anyway. At least until electric gets to ~$0.45/kw and equipment and installation remains the price that it is. Equipment might have gotten better, but batteries still fail, (i consume quite a bit more power than average, so Id need a ton of storage) inverters fail, and panels degrade and eventually need replacement. They need to be cleaned regularly etc.
It still goes, if electric is more expensive in your area, you can install yourself and consider your time free, and get a discount on equipment, like used, or surplus then it could be worth it.

You can only patch the holes of the leaky abstraction that is nostr so well. I appreciate that he has so many switches because nostr is just a road with a fork ever 6 feet and each path diverges in security, privacy, convenience or censorship resistance.
If tor was a universally good option we'd all be using it, but it's far from it. Outbox, great for discovery and censorship resistance, horrible for privacy and I still hazard for security. Nsec storage vs bunker, the list goes on.

I think I have to be done using anything wireless or turn my room/office into a faraday cage. Flock cams are within about ~300 feet of me and apparently they've been tracking anything RF for a while now.
Not sure why I didn't already put those together, but that's a bummer realization. I already can't leave my house without at least one ring cam from each corner, and a flock cam seeing me.

I mean there are GNU, OpenSSL, Mbedtls, Bouncy Castle, security modules in the linux kernel etc. Varying levels of foundations, but I think all non-profit or nonexistent. You could argue for-profit is contributing or even running forks, but that's like saying linux is RedHat or Canonical because of their contributions.

Sad side note. I saw a marketplace listing for a grampa selling his retirement project that was a "snow cone" "Italian ice" "water ice" (or whatever your dorks from other parts of the world call it) van and equipment. Poor guy got injured and couldn't do it anymore. He retrofitted some sort of 50s bread van it was really neat but wasn't worth the price even though I felt bad lol.

I think it's more of. Defer costs as much as possible to artificially lower prices, burn tons of money for years. Payments come due, customers get passed the bag.
IMO, I don't think it, at least in the startup scene I know, they owners didn't wake up and decide to just get greedy. They simply went years without taking any income, borrowed from anyone who would lend it, then had to find a way to get it paid up.

If you're board though. Andy, the guy that owns the Reading and Northern railroad now (the RR that owns 2102 and the tracks we were on), is one hell of an American success story so I'm told. I was told he bought what was left of failed railroads and found a way to make it profitable enough to do crazy shit like this. Mostly by fixing up and reusing old scrap!

Yes, and I have quite a few stories about that. I have over half a dozen cousins this age right now, most in the blue collar territory.
But also this is me, but different. Like If I'm going to work my nuts off anyway, and going above and beyond for someone else doesn't get me anything measurable, why not do it for myself, or at least have some fun doing it?
However the game theory does still work, if everyone defects then companies might be willing to pay for "good workers" too, so Im sure there is a supply-demand problem here, but it still means that's a needle in a haystack level of probability.

I think this usually comes back to. If I deploy my own coordinator why would I need relays at all then, or can we configure them? That's less moving parts and less harvest now, decrypt later attacks. So can clients talk directly with my coordinator to remove the middleman?

Yes exactly! And they have built-in accounts with interest on deposits too. So they just bet from their stash over and over till it's empty, but that can go on for a long time. They make sure you have just enough funds to keep you on it. They just jump between apps that give them free bonuses (that capture them)

I've helped a few GenXers get an IRA (or other tradfi retirements) setup for the first time in their lives in their late 40s... But I'm like hey, you can only put like 7-8k/yr into it, so even if you max it out that's only 120k of deposits by the time your retire... You'll be lucky if you can supplement your healthcare with that, or maybe buy groceries.
Some just assume (or hope :( ) they'll die before it becomes a problem or that they don't plan to retire. And I'm like wtf. I don't think that's going to work the way you want it to...

I do worry about this... I didn't realize how bad it was. My poor mom, if she can hang in there till retirement should be okay, but I have a feeling GenZ is going to have a big load. Carrying raising children and caring for parents if they don't get their shit together FAST. GenX might be the last of retirement, asset owning era if they can hold on to what they have.

Genz gave up. They can't gain wealth traditionally, saving's means nothing. They rent everything. Their apartment is rented, their furniture is still sitting on a 30% apr credit card, both cars are financed and every second of entertainment takes time or money from them.
GenZ owns nothing, they know savings has no power. Their work doesn't give them usable benefits or retirement. The best they get is a 401k match so they max that out and call it a day. If they save every dollar at the end of the month in a 10 years they can make a $80k down payment on a 40 year mortgage (just became popular in my area) and continue to rent but possibly someday they can make some tiny amount of money back on that $500,000 2 bedroom 1 bath 1960s home.
They're hoping to hit the lotto because they don't have any other chance of getting out. My friends are just defeated. They know they will be working until they die so I think they just want to take a chance while they can still afford to.
This is devils advocate. Yes gambling is an addiction and I've known some who have it bad, but plenty just throw $100/week at the lotto, scratch offs or kalshi, and go to bed.

I was dumbfounded how many people were watching and waving to us along the rail. I had no idea what this event was. I mean thousands of people at every siding, crossing, hill climb. It felt like we were royalty when we got out for lunch. The road and grass outside our station was full of people waving and recording.
