Had cataract surgery yesterday. All went well. The experience was strange as essentially I could, kind of, see what the were doing to my eye.
Now have two weeks of no #running did go for a 30 minute walk this morning though and plan on this being a pretty much daily thing.

A nice evening run today. Gentle miles with 6 x hill reps in the middle. My first fast work in about 7-8 weeks. Felt nice to pick up the pace.
Also recommending the book ‘The race against time’ about running as an older individual. A gently inspiring book for those of us that are no longer 21.

Reading half done. 1hr49. Super happy with that considering the interrupted prep for it.
Pain free and picked it up in the last 5. I think the cold beer at 8 miles was what did it.

Am unsure what to do…
I have a half marathon on Sunday and have had a calf niggle for several weeks. I last ran on Sunday. 6 miles and had a little discomfort towards the end. Not run since but have done rehab work on it.
Do I
A: do a gentle couple of miles today for mental reassurance
B: stay away from running till the day itself.
I am really not sure. All views welcome.

A lovely half marathon this morning in Kent. Part of our clubs monthly captains trophy race series.
A 6 minute pb makes me happy. A nice end to a week that was not the happiest.
A flat countryside course. Limited support round the course but suited to fast times.
Would have been happy with anything around 1hr 40 so to get under that was an achievement to me. Felt good at 4 miles so picked up the pace and get it going for the rest of the #running

I think the focus on that should be that even when including pensions and property around 1 in 4 have virtually no wealth. Essentially that groups ability to cope with an acute illness say or death or a loved one is zero.
As much as I suspect that the chart is being used to try and downplay inequality I don’t think it is completely successful.

that is the discussion our team are having currently.
We do not have enough staff to deliver what ideally the executive board would like so we are asking what don’t they want us to do. Strangely they seemed surprised by the question.

Today’s #positivity was accidentally letting out a series of noisy farts when out #running earlier. It happened just as a passed someone sat in a bench. I heard them despite listening to a podcast. The bench dweller definitely heard them. I chuckled and I hope they did too.

it was lovely. Especially with how considerate the drivers were. The majority of the run was on roads with no footpath. Drivers slowed and pulled well over to pass. All got a cheery wave from me and I got many back in return. No close passes, no abuse.

A #positivity and #running double bill today. Our ship had a breakdown meaning an extra day is the beautiful town of Skjolden. This means I could go and take a run round the fjord past waterfalls, sheep and gorgeous views. I ventured up a trail for a little way towards and abandoned farm but the rain had made things slippy and I only had road shoes so didn’t want to risk it.
A beautiful part of the world for a progression effort.

any vision for health that doesn’t truly address the wider societal issues is a blinkered vision and neglects the way it all connects.
Reduce poverty
Improve education
Make housing more affordable
Improve opportunities/support for children
Improve mental health support
Improve social care
All of this will impact on the NHS massively.
We need a government lead on cross department initiatives to start to address this.

I agree, but feel that the negative impact of reducing house prices is a tough problem to solve. So many people have house prices increasing built in to their financial security. I think a long (10 years?) stagnation would be more sensible. How that is achieved is difficult but I think the private landlord/rental sector is where the solution lies.

I have mentioned many times, including to our current MP that one of the best things the government could do would be to invest in relaunching the work done on sure start centre back in the Blair years.
The impact they had on attainment, mental health, health, criminality was massive.
The cost of the Tories destroying them is far far higher.

Today’s #positivity is a shout out to the volunteers that make sure events happen. Especially #Running events. I have spent 5 hours today helping mark out a course for a 30km trail race tomorrow and will be out for a similar period tomorrow clearing up afterwards.
It is tough work in this heat but without people giving up their time many events will

Nice bit of morning #Running spoilt only by needing to use the woods in the same way that bears do.
Not had to do that for a fair few years. Never a pleasant way to interrupt a long run.
That said the run itself was pleasant. Heart rate on my long slower runs is dropping down. Which is good to see.

Nice bit of #Running today. A warm fast interval session. Hill pyramids. Distance increasing from 5 to 10 lamp-posts and back down to 5.
My running this year has improved a lot. These fast sessions are getting quicker but it is my ability to work hard on them that is what I am enjoying most.
Whilst I am not about ‘no pain, no gain’ these interval sessions need to be tough and being strong enough to make it tough
Is nice.

I have always thought that the only time I would ever consider not voting is whenever it is
made compulsory (or possibly the crime commissioner votes)
Not sure why I feel like that but I think I am uncomfortable with the state mandating that I express an opinion on something.

So I have a Chromebook I don’t use much and am seeing if it is possible to convert it to #Linux
I did it with an old micro-laptop a few years ago.
A quick search of the internet suggests it can be possible but is a little tricky. Any recommendations on a way forward are welcome. It is an acer cb315-2h

Did a 5 mile race today. Not a big one. A hilly, tough course. I finished 3rd. Best finish Since my university days 30 years ago and very close to the 5 miles I did last your on a dead flat course.

Today’s #positivity is the chocolate cake I made my eldest child for their birthday tomorrow. They are 24. Work full time
But don’t stand any chance of moving out on their current salary. They are also autistic and are very anxious about change.
It is just me and them tomorrow as other child is at uni and wife is away with work.
The bonus is that it means we can have chocolate cake as the other two are not big fans. So this afternoon/evening I made a Sachertorte.

Was stuck in a late meeting so could join my club run. I have also had a slightly sore throat for a couple of days.
So ran alone as I didn’t want to risk infecting club mates with a cold a few weeks before big marathons (or any of them to be fair). Felt really easy and churned out a reasonably quick 10k showing I am in good shape.

The destruction of surestart centres by the early Cameron Tory government has had a massive impact in my view.
Many of these issues have their origins pre-school and these centres essentially helped identify and manage these. The impact they had was massive compared to the cost.

I have always wondered if a tax system based partly on earning but also on societal benefit would solve these kind of issues.
Companies/individuals that work in healthcare sectors pay a lower rate than say those working for a bank
Appreciate it is difficult and open to abuse over what is considered a societal benefit but it has always been an interesting thought to me. Essentially incentivising people to work for the good of society.

I see your point but my counter would be that house prices as they are stretch anyone but that top 10% massively and have done for a significant amount of time. Meaning that regardless of interest rate moves most people have little other income to save/spend.

to my mind it has minimal impact on the vast majority of the population.
Other than the top10% of people nobody else has much income to save or spend beyond the essentials so interest rate changes have no behavioural impact on them.

So after realising I hadn’t posted a #Positivity toot yesterday I will make todays post about a bit of self care and not beating yourself up over things that don’t matter a great deal.
I enjoy these posts and part of me is a little gutted I have missed a day, but then I realised that I have a holiday later this year when I will have no real connection for a week.
So cut yourselves some slack. Life is tough
at times so don’t freak it when something slips now and again.

Half marathon completed. Just outside my PB which considering this course was super hilly I am ecstatic with.
Had a strange moment a mile it where I thought I had something in my shoe. Turned out it was just the feeling coming back after it got a bit cold before the start (was about freezing point).
Then nearly destroyed my gentleman’s giblets on a bollard at about 11 miles. Just about survived minus a little bit of dignity.

Another slightly limited #Running week due to studying. Tonight was a tough session. 12 x hill loops adding up to just under 6 miles.
Enjoyed it and am tempted to enter a local half marathon in a couple of weeks as it is one of our club trophy races. Not really prepared for one but am comfortably running 11 miles on my long runs currently. Will go for 12 this weekend and if I feel ok after with commit to it.

Nice #Running this morning. My first time joining my club mates on the unofficial long run. My own anxiety has always made me nervous about doing this. It is something new, will I slow them day, do they want me there…etc etc. a direct invite from a lovely person made me get out and join them today. I was in a small group
Towards the back but it was the right pace for me and we had a great chat over the course of 90 minutes.

how did you find it? I tried the barefoot/minimalist shoe running a few years back. Was not good for me, however the Vivo-barefoot shoes I tried were super comfortable for just walking in but not good for me when running.

personally I doubt it would have much impact on house prices. Most would end up chucking the tax payment on their mortgage meaning they likely end up paying more long term but will mean less impact in house price.
You may also get more of the transaction cost separated from the house price (eg fixtures and fittings) which would not be liable to the tax.
Ultimately is the tax about raising money or dropping prices?

I work with palliative emergencies as part of my job and have bounced to and fro on assisted dying in my career.
I still am unsure where I stand. I agree that the individual needs choice. However I also think that we need to provide excellence in palliative care alongside that choice. Otherwise we risk assisted death becoming a cheap solution to not providing good terminal care for those who need it.

my wife is a well respected SEN lead in a primary school.
She fights for specialist placements for children with extremely high level needs but the local authority has no spaces so would have to pay for private specialist placements. They cannot afford these so do everything they can to avoid meeting the needs of these children. To the detriment of them and also the other pupils in the mainstream school that have their own education negatively impacted as a result.

Had a strange 50th birthday today. Lots of little errands today breaking up the day. Then a coffee/cake with my mum this afternoon and a nice evening meal. Followed by a nice Malbec. Finally I learned that I am shown front and centre in the video for an album launch I attended with my daughter a week or two back. I was twice the age of everyone else there. It was a fun night and gives me some cool dad points.
I am now watching the end of S3/start of S4 of the west wing.

I think this just reflects that as a society we care about the wrong things.
An obsession with growth rather than with caring for one another.
I had hoped the pandemic would re-align things a little but if anything it has made us more selfish.
To me we need to get to the heart of things and we need a massive re-alignment of our values. Moving from ‘what is in it for me?’ to ‘How can we help each other’.

A hot and hilly 10k race today. Happy with my time give a recent holiday full of wine and food along with a very hilly course described by the race organisers at the start as ‘not a pb course’. #running
