A burnout FediGroup could be a way for people in recovery from burnout, or post-recovery, to share our experiences and support each other. As well as for anyone to learn about burnout; what it is, what it's like, what can trigger it, and tips on avoiding/ mitigating it.
Some of the results I'm hoping for;
* a sense of solidarity
* voluntary mutual aid as appropriate
* building up a knowledge commons about burnout
* helping people identify burnout earlier

What if we made it a law that like services must interoperate without interop fees to the consumer? Like all payment systems must connect, it's up to them how they do it, but they must. Same with voice calling systems. The penalty for non-compliance being a revenue tax on proprietary services (that don't interop).
The goal would be to discourage Walled Gardens, and raise revenue to fund protocol research and proof of concept projects. What might be some of the unintended consequences?

Leaning into this, and appropriating Hogwarts as a symbol of trans inclusion (and radical inclusion in general) would be a far more effective way to annoy the creator than condemning a rich literary world as guilty by association. It would also avoid unnecessarily alienating fans of the Harry Potter mythos from the cause.

I haven't read the Harry Potter novels, but the Hogwarts I was introduced to in the movies seems like a place that would welcome trans students with open arms, and use their preferred pronouns without blinking an eyelid. Can you really see Professor Dumbledore tolerating any less?

A service like bandwagon.fm could be a co-op, owned by the artists whose music it hosts. It could be a social enterprise, whose constitution prioritises the needs of those artists over the financial interests of owners.
But however its governance is structured, one of the best ways to keep services accountable is the freedom to leave. So social publishing services need to enable publishers to use their own domain names for account and post URLs, and provide full account export.

We all know about the ways tech founders have sold their souls for funding to keep their platforms online; ads, Venture Capital, acquisition by corporations, or becoming one (IPO). Obviously we need ethical alternatives for social web services.
But not just alternative funding models. We also need alternative governance models, that keep the operators of services accountable to the people using them. A service like bandwagon.fm could be a co-op, owned by the artists whose music it hosts.

Take music publishing as an example. If artists commit to making bandwagon.fm the primary online home for their music, they need to be sure that it will continue to exist, and they will get plenty of notice before it's shut down. Which means the people running it need to have a plan for how they will cover the costs of storing and serving a growing collection of music files, long term.

Sure, now that Loops exists, it's probably the better choice for posting ephemeral microvideos, as part of a social conversation, like we do with text micro-posts. But Loops isn't constrained to this kind of social communication usage. It supports videos up to 3mins long, and people could just as easily use it to publish videos they might otherwise put on a YouTub channel. In the hopes they'll still be watched and valued many years hence.

Now having given these software projects as examples, I want to make it clear that I'm describing above are use patterns. Which can be applied to any software.
After decades of blogging, I can't help thinking of what I do on Mastodon as publishing. I link to my old posts and dig through them to find stuff, just like I do on my blogs. Conversely someone could use PeerTube to do video blogging, auto-deleting their old posts after a while like people do with their micro-posting accounts.

Our usual process is to set up some test accounts to check federation is working, and we usually wait until a project has at least 1 independent instance, to confirm that it's practical to self-host.
I can't find any Elgg instances on FediDB or the-federation.info, and only a demo server on fediverse.observer. Maybe that the plugin isn't publishing #NodeInfo data in a way these instance mapping sites can ingest?

At a deeper level is the critique implied by the phrase 'papers please, comrade'. It's traditionally understood that in democracies, people have an inalienable right to privacy, and ought not to be expected to carry ID or prove who they are. *Unless* they are claiming powers under a position of authority, proving their right to use those powers to other citizens.
The creeping normalisation of people being asked for papers - online and off - is the more difficult problem to grapple with.

Back in 2018, when Alien Weaponry released their debut album Tū, I was so excited about metal sung in Te Reo Māori that I paid for it on BrandCramp. I downloaded a copy in Ogg Vorbis, which I still have in my digital music collection, and listened to it on heavy rotate.
Today I logged in to download an MP3 copy for an interview I'm about to record on a music radio show (ae, I'm disorganised, sue me), and BC claims I've never made a purchase there.

With almost no transmission losses, as you'd get if that that solar energy was sent through long distance lines to the grid. As well as no energy cost for trucking fuel to the airport.
But nobody seems to be thinking as radically as this. Institutional thinking is so stuck in the industrial habits of the fossil fuel era.

People have quibbled with me multiple times here about whether hydrogen generated from surplus renewables might be viable one day as a fuel for heavy vehicles. Meanwhile, NZ Post went and bought a hydrogen-powered truck and is using it in production as we speak.
Feeling a bit vindicated, I have to say.

Initially semi-mainstream US acts like Ministry, NIN, White Zombie, Marilyn Manson, and lesser known groups like Filter and Machines of Loving Grace. Along with kiwi bands like Headless Chickens (Choppers), Nihil (the Nil album), and the heavier end of Supergroove's sound too, with its use of samples, and voice processing (eg You Freak Me, Five Word Headline).

One of them was outdoor raves, which I liked a lot better than watching bands in pubs, breathing second-hand tobacco smoke and getting beer spilt on me. That's if I could even get in. Remember I was in my teens, and the minimum legal drinking age at the time was 20.
Going to raves and meeting people who were passionate about their preferred electronic genres - as much I was about guitar-based ragebait and LoFi agitprop - got me curious at least about what the appeal could be.

By the mid-1990s, teenage Strypey was an angry young man. Who liked his music heavy, fast, aggressive, and usually political, couldn't see the point of instrumental music, and hated "techno" (electronica of any kind) with a kind of messianic zeal. Then a series of discoveries started to broaden my musical horizons.

If we ever needed ads to tell us what products and services existed, we certainly don't now. We've got search engines for that, and review/ Q&A sites tell us which ones are any good, and which suppliers are reliably trustworthy.
Media platforms that relies on ads for revenue are dinosaurs, and the asteroid hit about 20 years ago. The DataFarmers are hoovering up the bulk of the shrinking ad spend because they hire the best snake oil salesmen, not because they provide any real value.

Most people don't have all 4 of these advantages I've listed above. Many people don't have more than 1. Some don't have *any* of them.
For these people, an experience like I just had is not an intriguing intellectual puzzle to be cracked. It's an elephant blocking their driveway, and they have no idea how one is supposed to go about convincing an elephant to move (you can't move an unwilling elephant unless you have a crane).

I got to this result by doing a bunch of highly non-obvious things. I did these because, as already mentioned, I've stubborn. I'm also a natural tinkerer - the plus side of ADHD impulsiveness.
I've also been teaching myself how to use computer interfaces without manuals since I was a child, last century. So I have a lot of confidence to just try things, and a lot of experience to draw from to give me ideas when I'm stuck.

But on top of all that, at a time of growing geopolitical instability, launching a nuclear program is a great way to paint a target on our back. As Iran just learned the hard way.
Maybe the US wouldn't attack us (although nothing is off the table while Orange Stalin is in charge). But it could antagonise all sorts of other geopolitical Bad Actors.
If I had my way, every time Hooten says "nuclear" an arm would sprout from his chest and slap him repeatedly, until he comes to his senses.

I swore loudly once again at my poor podcast app, when Hooten took the opportunity to wave the #nuclear energy flag. Promoting this at the best of times makes him an unserious person on energy policy.
There are many, *many* reasons why nuclear generation is impractical and dopey. It takes far longer to start generating than renewables. Nuclear also needs imported, finite, fossil fuels. It's a non-starter in a tectonically active country, already running short of waste disposal options.

In case it's not obvious, the NZ government *must* condemn the Orange Stalin regime's contemptible warmongering. For exactly the same reason it's condemned Putin's.
Not only must NZ *not* support a war started by Orange Stalin. They ought to initiate a Boycotts, Divestment and Sanctions strategy. Matthew 'Wormtongue' Hooten, and Minister Chris 'fiddle with it while Rome burns' Penk seem to think it's a bit silly to call a spade a spade. Eg by pointing out the obvious and undeniable parallel between Putin's invasion of Ukraine and the US attacks on Iran. They don't have an argument, they just call it silly, move on quickly, and hope we didn't notice.

I like the cut of Bomber's gib. I've always admired his bombastic, no-nonsense style, and I consider them independent media brethren. I've even occasionally written guest posts for TDB, and commented regularly there when I was in China and trying to stay engaged in kiwi politics.
I support what Bomber is trying to do, with both the site and the livecast show/ podcast. Which is why I find it so deeply frustrating that he's effectively working for fascistern media:

@nprofile…ezqw When I'm promoting the fediverse and ActivityPub, I don't pretend I'm an independent observer, who just happens to be bullish on the AP ecosystem because it's technically the best way to federate anything ever. Because I'm not, and it isn't.
I think we've reached the point where you need to fully disclose what your relationship is to the DAT ecosystem, and the people developing it. You seem to have a lot of inside knowledge, and a *very* strong bias.

Further to my tip about microwaving a sweet potato as a quick and easy snack, it's also possible to prep a more elaborate meal with minimal effort, by putting a normal potato in the microwave.
I find about 3-4 minutes each side works, depending on the size of the potato and how many. You want to make sure they're thoroughly cooked, right to the skin, but if you overdo it you end up with crunchy potato. So best to underdo it and put it back in for a bit longer.

When all else fails, microwave a sweet potato.
Due to problems with interoception, people with ADHD can go for long periods without noticing we haven't eaten, especially when lost in hyperfocus. By the time we notice, we may not have the spoons to prepare a meal.
Microwaving a sweet potato, for about 2 minutes each side depending on size, is a simple way to produce a yummy, nourishing snack. Providing enough energy to keep us going until we can make or find a meal.

Frances Lee wrote about being excommunicated from the "church of social justice" (see the link in my pinned post). Lee was being polite, but let's call a spade a spade; what she's describing in her article's is a cult.
A cult that I refuse to conform to, or make any excuses for, just became it's ideology is a twisted parody of leftist and pro-diversity ideas I deeply believe in.
