Both of them want to go back, just that one wants to go further back in time than the other, I guess.
Both are reactionary.

Wouldn't be surprised. It's very clear that the way this term is used on Reddit, and what people are looking to find when using that term is queer. I don't even see a countertop reply. I even see Stone Cold the wrestler at one point, but not countertops. It's almost entirely queer replies.
Because nobody who uses that term is looking for a countertop. Like, ever.

2025-09-07 22:11:48 UTC

Considering practically all the top user results on Reddit for "stone top" are queer results, the AI answer Reddit gives about granite countertops feels like an egregious example of queer erasure.
Admittedly, at first I thought it was mildly funny, then the more I thought about it, the more annoyed I got.
I hate AI so fucking much.

Now, to be clear, I hesitated posting this here. A very sizable portion of my friends and mutuals here are broke trans people like myself. I don't want material support right now from anyone who can't afford it. I would be mortified.
But ultimately, this is my favorite place to share my writing, and I know that there are people that care about me here. I'm already so grateful for the support that I'm receiving from people I've met here. I have people I've met here already scheduling calls, in-person visits, and even substantial caretaking after my surgery.
I'm posting because I believe that mutual aid goes both ways and as difficult as it always is to accept help within the society we live, believing in mutual aid means both giving and accepting.
And I also know that when people are asking how to support, they offer because the want to give, not out of obligation, and, well, people have been asking.
Realistically, I never would have achieved a fraction of the things I've achieved in my life if it weren't for accepting support. And moreover, I wouldn't be where I am today, less than 3 weeks from surgery, if it weren't for the support, friendship, insight, and guidance from people I've met here.
So, thank you. I'm grateful.
I guess I'll leave it at that? I'm not sure how to sign this off so I guess I'll just

When I was a child, there was a rule at home. My estranged father was very proud of it, bragging about it even just a few years ago before we went no contact.
The rule was that if Lucy asks for something, if she even so much as expresses desire for something, she can't have it. There was not a corresponding rule for my estranged older sibling, just me.
I spent a lifetime learning not to want or desire, to suppress want and desire. Transition and my wonderful spouse have been teaching me how to want and desire, and it hasn't been easy, but it has made life so much more worth living. I wouldn't be here if I hadn't finally allowed myself the desire to exist, and everything I want and desire springs forth from this.
I'm not sure about abandoning want and desire. For me, it was pain, not relief.
Maybe I was doing it wrong. On the other hand, I would never have survived to find out, and the glimmering hint of my existence, hidden as it was, would have been extinguished in obscurity.
I'm not saying I believe all of my desires will be fulfilled, but I'm never willingly going to go back to a life, if it can even be called a life, void of want and desire.

well, the issue is not about automation, per se, or work in the abstract sense. It has to do with the death of our world, capitalist exploitation, capitalist hoarding, dispossession, etc.
I'm also opposed to systems of wage-labor and am deeply sympathetic to contract workers, freelancers, and self-employed workers.
As far as looking for tips on finding a streak app, I just mean one that isn't tied to language or anything, really, but that you can set your own goals.
As for language learning, Duolingo is just another spaced repetition system with a cute owl and mildly gamified. But there are definitely better options available-- Anki decks are free and customizable, which is what I'll likely be using as my replacement.

2025-05-01 16:07:42 UTC

Any good streak-tracking/reminder apps someone can recommend now that #Duolingo is fucky?
Maybe I should go old school with some gold star stickers.

2025-05-01 16:05:22 UTC

- reply

Now, whenever I see my #Duolingo streak add a day, I'll feel shame, not a sense of accomplishment.
So, as soon as I stop using it and continue with my learning goals elsewhere, I'll just use a different streak app altogether. I don't have to lose my streak because Duolingo decided to be an evil company.

2025-05-01 16:02:32 UTC

- reply

So now, I have to decide what I'm going to do.
I know I need to quit Duolingo, for sure, but also, it's not fair to me who was actually excited about my progress and goals. That streak thing did help. So, I guess, here's what I know:
* Don't pay for premium
* Stay for a minute on free and rush through my goals, maybe? Maybe a kick to get me moving faster on the goals and be done?
* Don't start another language with them

2025-05-01 15:58:15 UTC

I'm on day 1315 of my #Duolingo streak. It's not a perfect tool, but I'm a linguist and I enjoy it for the sake of hobby, if nothing else. I actually think it now has a really decent French program, which is their flagship language.
But now Duolingo is becoming an "#AI first" company, which means that they're firing all their contractors (but keeping employees for now) and replacing them with AI. They also just launched 148 new language courses using generative AI.
What the actual fuck?

Btw, since I had orchi in February and gallbladder removal last week, I have an interesting note.
- I feel zero sense of loss when it comes to orchi.
- I don't at all regret the gallbladder removal, and I'm not sad per se, but not sure the right word-- I almost feel a tinge of sadness like I've let down my gallbladder, like I failed it a little, and so that's why it had to leave. Only a little, and I was actually good to my gallbladder. Still, though.
Yeah, despite being so happy to have my gallbladder removed, I have a greater sense of mild ennui at the removal of my gallbladder which could have physically killed me in its own revenge plot than I do about the removal of two functioning testosterone factories.
This isn't a surprise, but yeah, I definitely get why people have a greater sense of regret about basically every single surgery vs trans surgeries.

The problem with this is that we rely too much on the graboids for what they give us. We must respect them and hold them sacred. We must protect what they give us so that one day, when the time is right, when we've genetically engineered the right man, and it *must* be a man, one we can control, he will have the power to use the spice given freely to us by the graboids. If we can harness him, we harness the spice, and whoever controls the spice controls the universe. We can be the masters.

I mostly haven't been public about it because I just haven't felt it relevant or the need to discuss it. We feel the need to announce this as it may affect our users-- Pixelfed claims to have 150,000 monthly active users. Some of our own users have accounts there and likewise many of our users interact with other Pixelfed accounts from our instance.
## Why?
Pixelfed is leaking our data, and, it seems, the data of any other instance it federates with on Mastodon. We've been confused and tracking this for some time, but have been uncertain what was happening exactly. This post sums up the issue better than I can:
https://fokus.cool/2025/03/25/pixelfed-vulnerability.html
It's clear that this leak is not a priority for Dansup, the sole maintainer of Pixelfed.
However, it's a danger for instances like ours, with vulnerable users, but realistically, it's a danger for any instance to expect privacy and have it neglected and disrespected to this degree.
## Will we federate with Pixelfed instances in the future?
Idk, possibly? But at the very least, we must have assurance that a particular pixelfed instance has been updated to v1.12.5 in order for us to even consider federating again. However, there are serious concerns about the fact that Pixelfed is run by someone who is hostile and neglectful to the Mastodon community and has a history of not taking security concerns seriously. And moreover, Pixelfed doesn't even have federated blocking implemented, so the only thing that can be done is to defederate, and even then, this only affects *new* posts.
## Difficulty
Like Mastodon, Pixelfed is a separate project built on ActivityPub protocol, so it's not as simple as blocking another instance. This is blocking the entire project, and the instances running it. We don't make this decision lightly, and we hope you understand why we felt this necessary to protect our users who deserve an expectation of privacy.

I just don't have smoothies very frequently. I should change that, though. I love soup. And what's a smoothie except soup through a straw?

Y'all, I keep seeing messages about Jeff Goldberg in that chat, but my mind keeps autocorrecting it to Jeff Goldblum.
And I just kinda...
I think that this situation could have been that much funnier.

Y'all, it turns out I'm not pregnant.
I just like popcorn. And hot sauce. And nutritional yeast.

Do you think this means I might be pregnant?

I always say I should post more selfies and then I don't. I should fix that, right?

We're not going to accomplish a damned thing if y'all can't get up on your feet and at least acknowledge the torture machine that the curtain has been concealing the entire time.
And at some point, you're going to have to make a decision to stick your wooden shoes into the damned gears.

All this guffawing about the fact that the curtain is torn away, and screaming about why won't anyone put up the curtain, meanwhile, there's something terrifying behind the curtain and you're too afraid to look at it dead in the eye.
I get it, it's scary, but you have to open your eyes.

The only thing that's changed is that you can see behind the curtain now.
But y'all feel so much more safe and comfortable with the curtain that instead of looking at what's behind, you're trying to wrap yourself up in the curtain like it's a blankie.
Stand up and open your eyes.

2025-03-25 12:29:37 UTC

Y'all, the world just doesn't work that way. It never actually did, you just couldn't see it because it was veiled under a curtain of bureaucracy.

Yeah, similar for me. I still haven't read the book yet, but as for the therapy comment, it's not a fictional world for me.
Therapy is not accessible for me, though I've definitely tried really hard to access it. I won't list all the reasons, of which there are many. Suffice it to say, therapy may as well not exist at all with how little access there is for me, and it's never been accessible in my life. It was easier to get access to a neuropsychologist in order to get some neurospicy diagnoses than it has been to find a therapist. It's just not something available to everyone.

You're absolutely right that this is a choice-- they choose to exploit and oppress when they could do otherwise, and I further articulate in the piece on my website that regardless of legal or not, the incentives and the structure are what matter-- the fact that they choose this is what matters.
Someone else in this thread brought up something similar, especially regarding the shareholders. Instead of rehashing, I'll link you to my reply to them:

oh damn, I should have thought of this. Following for same question. I almost always write in Markdown and use a lot of italics and occasional bold to help people parse dense text, and this is achieved with asterisks, so it forms that way when I write even in other spaces like Mastodon. I'd love to know the answer.

"As a reminder, generally speaking, under the global capitalist system, and definitely in the US, companies are obligated by law to do what is in the best financial interest of their shareholders, their owners.
This means that a company is legally obligated to pay you as low of a wage as they believe the market can bear. Mind you, they are not legally obligated to give you a fair wage (whatever that would mean), and they are not legally obligated to give you a living wage, but simply just enough in order that the work gets done and the shareholders, the owners, get paid the maximum profit. Your needs and interests never enter the equation– never.
Companies are not only incentivized, but legally obligated, to make life worse for you than it otherwise could be."

When working as a wage-laborer, you are not an owner of the product, nor are you the owner of the means of production– the factory, the tools, the land, etc. (again, these also are all things created and/or maintained by the laborers). In your capacity as a wage-laborer, you aren't even really a person– you are simply one of the expendable (and exploitable) costs of doing business.

When you work for an employer, you might imagine that you work for your boss, but your boss may simply be a manager, another laborer who works for the company; however, it's not really the company that you work for, either. You work for the owners of the company. To put it in other terms, you work for a landlord.

"When an employee is paid wages, the product itself is alienated from an employee's labor and time. Despite the fact that the employee has deducted time from their life, and done all of the labor, the employee owns no share of the product, the fruits of their labor. The product is simply the property that is created as a result of labor.
The product is therefore owned by the employer, though the employer has done no labor, the employer has done nothing to create the product.
An employer is simply another term for owner."

"*Wages* only exist within the context of an employer-employee relationship. So, let's try this again:
*Wages* are payments made by an employer to an employee for time spent doing labor, generally under conditions dictated by the employer."

"Let's start with the obvious:
*Wages* is a term representing money paid for work
Yes, but not good enough."

2025-03-21 11:40:05 UTC

WTF are *wages*?
"How many of you feel deeply that you deserve more for your labor, but feel helpless to demand it, or to even ask it?
Is this an agreement upon terms or is this coercion?"

#1 was already part of the reason for considering this and you make a good point about people who don't have access to a text to speech solution.
#2 though, that's a spectacular point that makes a ton of sense. Connection does matter. This is a really good reason to do it.

This makes a lot of sense. I wonder if the tradeoff of higher accessibility by people who wouldn't normally read a text post would counter that. That's something to think about.
Also, it's good to know that you would be back and forth between audio and text. I guess I kind of created an image in my mind that some people are text people and some people are podcast people lol -- this helps me realize it's actually potentially helpful for a wider selection and overlap of people than I was conceiving, and ultimately, making a better experience for people reading/listening is a bigger goal than worrying about boosts.
Hmm. That's good information to consider. Thank you, Willow!

Even basic "good idea/bad idea" answers are welcome, but your insight either as a consumer or podcaster would also be welcome.
Context:
I'm also a filmmaker and have professional gear and expertise, that's not an issue, and I know a lot of people just use their phones, anyway-- that's not my concern. I'm much more concerned about the added time vs utility for people who read/listen to my writing. I could even do a video podcast if I wanted, but that sounds exhausting and introduces even more friction to my process than simply adding audio.
- I would like to add accessibility
- I want to offer people the ability to consume it in the way that's most convenient for them
- Yes, I want to increase discovery for my own subscriber growth
- I'm not a huge podcast consumer (though sometimes) due to auditory processing issues, so I don't fully understand the ecosystem even as a consumer
Questions:
- Is this a good idea?
- Does this help you with other newsletters/writers you follow?
- As for accessibility, do people who use text readers appreciate having a human voice or are they so used to the text readers that it's not that big of a deal after a while?
- What am I not considering?

2025-03-19 16:41:53 UTC

Advice?
I'm considering adding podcast audio recordings (voiced by me!) of my newsletters, but I'm hesitant.
I guess the biggest question is, is it worth my time and effort for myself and/or for the benefit of my readers & would-be listeners?
