I'm just an idiot, who knows what I'll say next! Far too much politics, not enough furry stuff and goofery, working on a balance.

Somewhat, you could call truthiness the system which leads to emocracy, truthiness being a more individualistic thing where someone might believe it because it's more efficient, more acceptable or simply because you want it to be true. Once it becomes a system of truthiness among many then you get your emocracy. Truthiness as a term has been around since 2005 so it has some legacy but hasn't really held up in the common ergot.

We do have a more recent term of "truthiness" which distills the same idea down into a simple term similar to "alternative facts" in 2016.

When the far right wants to normalise a term they'll make it happen through repetition until it becomes inextricably linked to the meaning they want it to have. It's definitely something the left cannot get together to do, appealing to the basal lizard brain.

I'm going to assume the symptom lies in people feeling a lack of worth and control, that comes directly from the main method of having worth and control being money. They don't have much of it, what they do have buys less and yet the rich get richer. There's an imbalance, an injustice but these rich folk, they're crafty and say it's someone else, an outsider group who can be othered as a distraction from the real problem, them.

Short-term thinking means no historical context either, just what works in the moment. Additionally, 40 years of privatisation means central government is incapable of delivering those services anymore if they were to do so, that knowledge is gone and are reliant on private companies to do it for them which leaves us in the same place we started.

Something I forgot about is that this new bill also introduces new search and seizure powers so not only can the DWP snoop on your transactions they can also invite themselves into your home and take things from you. All this for a very small percentage of actual fraud, below 10% overall.
A remnant of Rishi's tenure Starmer apparently took a liking to for some reason, probably nothing to do with cruelty towards the already maligned at the bottom for votes.

Thing is do you trust the government to run it better? Feel like they'd happily keep it starved of money given there's nobody to answer to if they continue the mess Thames Water started.

Yeah, this one's been a concern for a while and it's a real overstep in terms of privacy violations chasing shadows. The DWP has no authority to see anything I do with my bank account.
Really doesn't help that the DWP is a cruel monster who already punishes many innocents due to the prevalent culture that everyone who needs benefits is presumed to be workshy and a liar like it's a honeypot dragnet for scammers.

Sounds like they just want invisible unhoused people, they don't want to deal with it but they also don't want to see them drifting around either so render them invisible, what you can't see won't hurt you.

Acting like insecure work is a necessary evil is similar to how zero hour contracts were also billed as a necessary evil too under the guise of being "entry-level experience" though what it did was lock people into positions where they cannot make it into better employment and end up in a cycle of jobs and unemployment. If you didn't know better you'd assume it was intentional, a product of the system that demands an underclass to function.

Are you positing a slippery slope of newer, more usurious reasons to refuse service? They have them already, if anything this is the best application of it as it hits those who are doing real harm on a grand scale.

I can see the concerns but note that their industry routinely denies service for arbitrary and prejudicial reasons a lot, just a question of what they can get away with in a socially acceptable way.

Certain degree of having an unsustainable business if playing by the rules means you can't turn (as much of) a profit.

So, how do you fight that? Revolution is an option but those can be long, violent and involve an incredible amount of work in building something better. You can work within what systems exist but if the problems are the systems themselves then revolution might be your only option.

Fear, uncertainty and doubt are powerful when used in combination with anger and outrage. You might wonder about what to do about it but you may also wonder why it's happening at all.

But with that comes in-built mediocrity, you don't need to try but you'll succeed anyway so there's a lot of average or simply useless men in positions of power and wealth. That also brings with it a thin skin, your entitlement is always at stake due to those below you taking what's yours and any increase in their freedoms and/or abilities separate from yours means less for you. Zero sum power struggles and also the encroaching fear you'll be cast aside once they laugh at you.

The force behind much of the far right is the idea that you are superior and others exist mostly to be subjugated to your will. Wrapped up in that is stuff like misogyny but also white nationalism, xenophobia and class structure among other things, all built upon the idea that you (as in the general sense of the white straight cis male) as the default person do not need to prove yourself, you're already at the top so why try?

Don't think the shaming regarding priorities is going to change the minds of those you want to reach. Both are important in different ways and there's a good chance awareness of one doesn't mean awareness of the other.

Profiteering is what I prefer to see it as, having the value be in lockstep with volume right up until 2021 when it splits and only widens means either something stopped keeping them in check or an intentional split was made. It's like the graph showing the discrepancy between productivity and wages.

Is there good space that the bigger private house builders haven't claimed? We need more social housing but we can't have it come at the cost of green land, those fallow years of not bothering with social housing means a lot less space to make big initiatives like that work.

It's treating humanity as a monolith that's getting me, we know it's not the species as a whole but specific parts of it doing most of the badness. If it's just an issue of optics where the planet is fine, it's how things will be which is the problem then there's some validity there. Just... just don't go straight to "humans are the problem, get rid of all of them".

2024-08-13 06:50:10 UTC

No, I hate that thinking, humans have been very capable of working with the planet for millenia. Acting like we're some parasite is pretty much relegating ourselves to defeat and doing nothing as if it's some form of cosmic alignment to eradicate humanity.
Like it or not we have always had an influence on nature and the planet as a whole since we've been there just like every other species so we need to see ourselves as a part of that web, we go and so does a lot go with us.

Problem is the vagaries and edge cases regarding what qualifies as "harmful" and towards whom. Anyone can be targeted for any reason given enough leeway in the definitions, it's also a huge free speech issue to force private companies to censor content made by their users.

It can seem like this is planned but how often is that the case? Is there shadowy and not so shadowy plays at work, possibly from the Kremlin, playing towards a far-right ethnocentric fascist empire extending westward from Moscow? Possibly but that's conspiratorial thinking for you, it's the border of the known and unknown and seeing what shapes the chaotic noise therein makes.

We warned others, we told them that Labour would fall into Tory traps by persisting them and so here we are, looking at a cabinet that'll be declared a lame duck and will usher in another Tory victory the next time someone has a no confidence vote or if things really take a dive a Reform victory.
