my job now wants me to "review" PRs pushed by an LLM as part of my weekly workflow.
so!
anyone out there hiring?

now, I will grant, for those of us who grew up dealing with asshole elders who refused to even consider learning how to interact with computers and demanded things "just work" that were wholly unreasonable, yeah, the 80s, '90s, and early '00s sucked.
get over it.
the fucking boomer dipshits are dying off, and a bunch of zeds and alphas are growing up with an ecosystem that's completely fucked for any attempt to learn on their own.
perhaps fix things for them instead of assuming they magically had access to magazines with BASIC listings and permissive environments where experimentation was at least tolerated, instead of being given a fucking menuless UI on a locked-down kiosk with fuck AI search results either refusing to give them necessary knowledge because it's "Hacking" or telling them to snort glue?

yes, it is frequently very the fuck difficult to figure out the context wherein a user might choose to do a thing that constitutes a security problem.
that is what you are paid for. get good.

2026-06-18 15:14:17 UTC

if you think the users are stupid, then you are letting your own arrogance reduce your own ability to analyze the problem space fully.
users do things that make sense to them in the moment. failure to understand the context where an action -makes sense- and is thus the correct action to choose is a skill issue on your part.

Now, whether or not cloudflare can be actually punished -for- racketeering, given they "just" "host" the service instead of running it directly? prrrobably not under this administration.

I don't think it's blackmail per se; the proper term for an Organization allowing crime to happen in their area to anyone who doesn't pay the Organization for 'protection' against said crime is a "racket" - as in, 'racketeering'.

Kind is not the same as nice, and sometimes the kindest thing to do is to tell someone that what they are doing is wrong and that they need to cut that shit the fuck out.

2026-04-27 20:51:12 UTC

So, something that's been bugging the shit out of me?
These fucking assholes who let LLMs run rampant and delete prod?
They query the LLM for "why" it did that.
This is delusional behavior.
LLMs do not have a concept of 'why': they assemble a response based on a statistical sampling of likely continuations of the original prompt in their database.
LLMs do not have the ability to have motivation. It is a machine.
LLMs, further, function by instantiating a new runtime -for each query- that reads the prompt and any cache, if they exist, from prior sessions:
which means, fundamentally, "asking" the LLM to explain "why" "it" did a thing is thrice-divorced from reality:
It cannot have a why;
It cannot have a self to have motivations;
And the LLM you ask is not the one that did it, but is a new instance reading from its predecessors notes.
Treating it as tho it is an entity with continuity of existence is fucking delusional and I am fucking sick of pandering to this horseshit.
Touch some grass and get a fucking therapist.

Furthermore I have -zero- interest in cleaning up -this- mess once the LLMs have turbofucked everyone and ground their infrastructure into unusable rubbish.
Like, seriously, if you ripped out the engine of your car and replaced it with a vat of shit-flavored pudding, do you think that your mechanic would appreciate seeing that towed into her service bay? Especially if you were demanding that it be fixed without the appropriate budget and resources to hazmat-vaporize the fecal slurry and replace it with OEM spec parts?

2026-04-27 20:25:50 UTC

"At least you've got job security"
I am fucking -done- with hearing this.
No, I don't.
My 'job security' is an illusion based on the presumption that, in the event that my skillset is needed - or even essential - that there will be someone who will pay for the privilege of accessing those skills.
Except that the fucking LLM jockeys have decided to claim that their product has my skillset.
Even tho it demonstrably does not, this still means that the people who would presumably hire me are uninterested in doing so, due to the existence of a machine that promises to do it for them.
And when they fail, and their business goes insolvent, they still will not be hiring me because -they no longer have a fucking business to hire me for-.
So no. My carefully built, decades-of-practice skills are -not- job security, despite LLMs being obviously, flagrantly, and blatantly incapable of replacing me.

A'ight. The whole vibecoding thing deserves a chance to prove itself.
So here's something that I haven't seen done sufficiently well by regular coders; if AI is truly that much more innovative, it shouldn't have any problem.
One of the problems with compute is the whole billing and scheduling thing - a lot of places have specific cost-per-hour to run batch processing; a lot of large enterprises have complex pipelines that need scheduling in order to interleave things that need processing with resources available to process them.
So a vibe coder who's confident they can prove themselves could create a utility that can look at a given program's binary, analyze it, and determine how long it will take to run, and calculate the cost to run it. Do this within 1% of actual and you'll have a truly innovative new product.

2026-02-26 18:47:02 UTC

One -real- strong warning sign I've noticed from people who are falling into 'ai psychosis' is that if you doubt, object, or otherwise push back on the 'amazing discoveries' that they've made from interacting with the LLM?
They won't argue on the merits of the thing itself and how it interacts with the real world, but instead will immediately jump to "are you objecting to this because it came from the ai?" and get immediately hung up on that aspect.

But the critical thing to note here is that you yourself aren't really bringing anything new to the situation; you're holding their attention while they reflect their internal state off of you and then work out what it means.
The meaning is something they bring themselves; it's nothing you're actually involved with other than providing the time and space for them to suss that out.

2026-02-16 23:44:56 UTC

- reply

And then you agree with their interpretation of their internal state and reflect it back to them - perhaps you might reword it a bit to emphasize a different detail, or turn it around and make it a question to prompt further discussion.

I think a lot of frustration comes from how many of us here - on masto, on bsky, etc - are very high-information and low-latency learning about things, while the majority of the population lags days or weeks behind finding out.
So that leads to a lot of frustration when we clearly know there's a catastrophic issue but other people are not displaying a sense of urgency - in large part because they haven't fully caught up to the extant context, nor processed what that information means, nor had a chance to fully understand their own position relative to it.
Large movements also don't happen overnight; people need time to talk with their family, friends, neighbors, etc. to figure out what those people know and if they have a consistent view of the world.
And in the meantime the administration keeps on doing more and more outrageous acts, which becomes kind of overwhelming; it's a sort of DoS on high-information people's ability to cope.

2026-01-26 19:33:08 UTC

LLMs do not "think"
The LLM instantiation methodology* correlates patterns in the data that the developers provide to build a database** of linkages between collections of words and phrases*** that appear in that corpus.
The way in which this database is used is to inform a probabilistic selector process by seeding it with a set of probabilities**** associated with a given word or phrase; that set of probabilities has pointers to related words or phrases.
If a given word or phrase is found in close proximity in the original data consistently, then those probabilities will be higher.
When a query***** is made to this database, a randomization process is used to drop certain parts****** of the query being sent into the lookup process. The remainder is divided into segments† and passed into the database for query.
So.
With all this in mind, it should be -screamingly obvious- why this story, of how it's entirely feasable to get an LLM to rederive copyrighted works out of the database that was seeded with those works, happens: https://futurism.com/artificial-intelligence/ai-industry-recall-copyright-books
* I am deliberately not using the word 'training'. You can train dogs; you can train employees; you can train chimpanzees; what you do to an LLM is not training - it is building a database to feed into another process.
** I am deliberately not using the word "model" here, so as to restate the process in plain language absent the jargon these dipshits insist on using to obfuscate their techniques.
*** "Tokens" is another jargon word here.
**** "weights" is less objectionable as jargon, given it's used for a number of things with this approximate conceptual shape, but it's fucking annoying to me in this context.
***** "prompt" is their fucking bullshit term for a natural-language database query
****** "zero weighting" is jargon for "we drop it on the floor" - this is why I keep referring to people doing "prompt engineering" as playing games instead of doing actual security; if the fucking thing drops random parts of your shit on the ground, then inherently you have no way to enforce a policy that is subject to that process.
† "tokenized", see ***

I really wish that ai advocates would accept my "I don't want it" as sufficient.

2026-01-18 22:42:32 UTC

ok look so, here's the thing:
I fucking hate LLMs; I refuse to use them for personal reasons; I consider them to be overall harmful to humanity generally and to the users specifically.
LLMs cannot generate new ideas; they can only regenerate patterns that have already been used.
However, this does mean that there are a few limited uses - e.g. boilerplate code that exists as a way to frame the code that actually does the work, generating large numbers of unit tests, and other similar situations that do not have connection to the actual logic of the system and are not directly associated with production, that can be run against a deterministic evaluation framework for correctness - where I have seen them used by a -very- -very- few developers effectively.
I have to admit this because it's a part of reality.
I still think that a -small- language model that has been optimized very specifically for a single language on a carefully curated codebase would be a far superior option, but I recognize that there are a -very- few developers who can make use of LLMs in a way that does not directly lead to orphan mulching.

2026-01-16 21:30:16 UTC

LLMs can only generate code patterns that have been used before.
Not to put too fine a point on it, but the majority of code an LLM will have been exposed to will necessarily be old code,
much of which will have CVEs,
because there are -more versions of vulnerable code out there- than there are versions of safe code.

the particularly interesting thing about jury nullification is that while the laws against whatever may be on the books, the jury makes it clear that the people do not find it in their best interests that those laws be enforced in those circumstances.
and I think the agencies in question here should think long and hard about how much support they have lost for the default deference to authority to be so completely overturned that this took place.
I mean, they won't, clearly. But it's what I'd recommend, before an even clearer example takes place.

Unironically, its the whole mcmansion design horseshit.
The house they're building and framing in is a nice sensible bungalow arrangement with a straight roofline - no dormers, no custom shaped windows, no elaborate floorplan, basically a couple rectangles and a basic geometry roof.
Take a look at the housing developments going up out by Tracy - https://maps.app.goo.gl/Pqde3kUdXxJ5cDa16 - and look at the roofs on those, and - yeah. You can't build that this way; you need all kinds of wacky engineered lumber and bespoke construction for just the roofline, let alone all the crap inside.
"Interesting rooflines" are a thing that real estate agents claim increases sale prices.
You just can't -build- that shit even with skilled labor in a few days, and you end up needing way more equipment too.

Tim Sweeney is defending the production of CSAM.
Tim Sweeney is the CEO of Epic Games, the publisher of Fortnite.
Fortnite is a game targeted at children.
If the CEO of a game targeted at children is defending the production of CSAM, I have some -very- specific questions about his motivations in doing so.

Hot* take,
Phishing tests are a symptom of a failed security organization.
There's many potential causes for the failures - I'm not necessarily saying that the individuals in the org are incompetent; frequently the failure of the org is at the political level within the wider-scope org - but if a phishing test appears in a user's inbox, the security org has already failed and needs complete replacement.
* keep your opinions as to the heat value of this take to yourself.

anyone who anthropomorphizes a bot and claims it to have enough agency to 'apologize' is exhibiting delusional behavior and needs thorough counseling on the difference between a human and an object.

we've been having a lot of discussions about 'ai' shit lately, and one of the things I argue is that most modern 'ai' systems are not built in a way that is safe for human life.
The specific comparison I am making is to the factories of the early industrial revolution, which had lots of exposed moving parts that had a tendency to turn people into mulch.
We invented things like "OSHA" and the discipline of industrial safety in order to reduce the number of mulched orphans.
We did this by redesigning machines such that safe operation was possible - things like shielding moving parts from areas where people are, for instance, or ensuring that the location from which you operate the machine is in a location where you cannot physically be in a mulchable position.
My contention is that 'ai' - and people-interacting robots like the waymos - need to be revised in like fashion.

2025-12-22 06:48:27 UTC

In conversations with my partner, I've been referring to "industrial machines that have the capacity to cause significant harm to human life and health" as "Victorian orphan mulchers"
Which made the conversation about the recent waymo issues a lot more entertaining.

For all the conspiracy theories about various cabals of shadowy figures running the world secretly, it's kind of exasperating to be able to point to specific named individuals - fucking Altman, fucking Musk, fucking Thiel - as being the actual driving force behind massive injustices and inequities, who can get away with this due to having the resources to make themselves inaccessible for any redress.
I fucking hate this situation.

RE: https://chaos.social/@danimo/115729293506504456
Sam Altman is a greedy little shit and the world would be a much less stressful place if he did not have the resources to pull bullshit like this.

If you do not have jobs for juniors,
you won't have seniors for the jobs you need them for.
The use of llm-driven tools to eliminate junior-level jobs means you will not have senior-level candidates for the roles you need them for.
No llm is capable of the systemic understanding of projects that a senior developer needs to have.
If you are using llm tools instead of juniors and interns, you are shooting yourself in the foot.

this is the price of loyalty to any one company or brand - your entire life ruined when happenstance or malice has them decide you're something to be purged.

Yes, I realize 'consent' is a complex topic, because it pertains to interpersonal relationships and those are always complex.
However, the basic principle of "if an action is likely to affect someone else, ask if they're willing to allow that effect, and only proceed when they give a clear, unambiguous, and uncoerced 'yes'" is really not that hard.

I mean, more'n just the flimflam evinced thru increased cognitive load, but also the orientalism of finding an 'exotic' word to say something to bypass explaining what they intend with plain language.

developers really need to learn how consent works. this constant pushing thing sucks.

Only give a system access to resources that you explicitly want modified.
This is the same rule as the gun safety rule to "only point the barrel at something you're ok with being destroyed".
This is -basic fucking safety-.

For example, openai says it wants 200M paying customers by 2030.
That is basically "the entire Professional and Business Services sector of the US economy" paying....apparently $25/seat/month.
I'm not entirely sure -paperclips- have that kind of market saturation.

thing is, there's only so long you can push a bubble like this without a result, and with "genai" the result is genuinely unattainable because - due to the size of the bubble - there is really no way to -actually pay off- the operations costs at this point.

Depends on how long the "more money than god" corps can keep up this hemmoraging; I figure google will likely outlast most of the competition, cuz their hardware verticality gives them more staying power due to the economic advantages of being able to have that shit in house.

So anyway I figure, yeah, we're stuck with this toxic sludge but at least it'll be mostly malware hijacking graphics cards and other small model shenanigans in a few years.

2025-12-06 23:51:17 UTC

And now everything is cheap crap, and now you -can't- raise the price, and now you're stuck running very large expensive datacenters with zero resale value and your food supply to train the models on is gone and most of the people actually using your product are only doing so thru psychological manipulation - real fucking healthy way to keep a customer base, huh - or thru mandates from toxic management, so your remaining customer base is slowly burning out and becoming less functionally able -to- use your product.

So the ai companies, instead of marketing this as a coding -assistant- (rather than -replacement-) and making it expensive, got greedy and marketed it as "fire all your employees; everyone uses this for everything now" and priced it for mass adoption.

The other people benefitting are using it to creep on people by generating lewds, and -those- guys are going to keep paying no matter how high you crank the price.

Second, by releasing so widely and cheaply, this meant that, yes, the "tools of creation" were in the hands of everyone!
and a lot of "everyone" are interested in finding ways to automate plausible human interactions in order to scalably remove money from the others.
Which means spam.
