This is a long piece from the Guardian, but I found it worth reading. It's a broad history of military targeting, chains of decision-making, and how "AI" is just a wrapper being blamed for a bigger Palantir project to speed up the process of targeting and eliminate any chance of double-checking in the moment.
But importantly, the piece doesn't treat this as something new either but cites similar targeting clusterfucks in 2003 and even back to the Vietnam war era.

@nprofile…jec2 oh my God! I did have one thing that I will standby on the committee, which is telling everyone that they have to actually submit PDFs. I don’t care if it’s open access and online because what that means is every committee member has to go to every website and download every PDF and that is a waste of my time when I’m already putting in a significant amount of time and you already have the PDF.
fortunately, this package is quite tidy and well documented

Penn State only lets you put in 2000 words for your tenure or promotion narrative/personal statement. And that’s an accommodation for people who were here during 2020. I think it goes back down to 1500 and another year or two.
this makes me wildly jealous as an external reviewer when I see people get like five pages or something.
(it’s the only place we have a limitation)

@nprofile…ywea 🥳 also for n of 1 or whatever, I did a sleep study a few years ago got a solid "meh." It turns out my issue may have primarily been sleeping in a poorly-ventilated room, which I solved by leaving the door and often window open and sleep a ton better. Breathing right is so good!!!!!

I wrote a reflection on professional statements, why I think they’re important and why they are also of limited utility. Statements must be made at points. But I don’t think we are served by asking our volunteers to put a lot of time into a plethora of statements. We need a lot of big and small actions from leaderships and each other.

@nprofile…2slc having worked there (as a contractor), I think what gets me and what Musk and his allies are 🤝 on wanting to destroy is that there is so much that NASA does for studying earth and understanding climate change and things that aren’t the 1% of shiny projects people think of. And I mean that’s maybe only 20-25% of what they do but it’s such a big and important bit. And when people on any side talk about moon stuff or Mars even, it worries me.
