I think when discussing early-career Kirk, it's good to keep Gary Mitchell's words in mind:

That one's always been tricky from a gameplay perspective. I strongly recommend diverting power to engines so you can get out in front of it, launch a torpedo, and then get the hell out of the blast cone. Rinse and repeat as necessary.
