@nprofile…dfpn sadly I think most media companies facilitated his rise (and never questioned anything he did, criminal activities included)... because in this brave new world "engagement" is king and "normal" (read: measured, traditional) politicians don't generate as many clicks or outrage or attention as that abomination. In my little corner all I can do is teach (and encourage in) my child critical thinking. le sigh.

With the news of the secret $100 million investment in Bluesky by Bain, I keep thinking about protocols.
Maybe the perceived "drawbacks" of #ActivityPub are ultimately strengths?
#ATproto handles identity in a way that allows a single sign-in across apps. But wouldn't this make it easier to profile you? Is this why crypto VCs are so attracted to it?
And ATproto has funding in the 100s of millions by VCs but at some point they'll want to turn a profit. There is ZERO pressure here to ensh*tt*fy

Mike Masnick, who sits on the board of #Bluesky, claims the team was too busy to announce the series B funding (see screenshot).
But something is fishy.
Even the VC firm - Bain Capital Crypto - isn't listing Bluesky anywhere on their website: https://baincapitalcrypto.com/portfolio/
Why the mystery? Was Bluesky afraid of a public backlash & asked to keep the information under wraps?

I’ve been looking for a 4-leaf clover my entire life. Actively looking whenever I’m in a garden… and never found one.
Until today.
In a countryside train station, before hopping on a train to Como with my family.
I told my child and she immediately found another. She was so proud: “It’s my first 4-leaf clover!” (I immortalized the moment with my phone - the photo shows her hand picking it).
I’ll be pressing them in a book later today. Such precious keepsakes 💚

There's a ladybug following me everywhere since yesterday.
She roamed near me as I did a video call from my child's room yesterday morning.
Today she flew on my computer monitor and wandered around for a bit. Then I went to shower and she followed me to the bathroom, planting itself on the window. She's very cute.

My experience of the #fediverse :
Year 1 (2023):
It feels a little lonely as 99% of my friends stayed on Big Tech platforms.
Year 2 (2024):
I start a blog - #TheFutureIsFederated - to explain the fediverse to "normies"... and I make a lot of new (techie) friends.
Year 3 (2025):
My techie friends encourage me to start self-hosting with #YunoHost... and I do! (GoToSocial, PeerTube, NextCloud...) I LOVE it.
Year 4 (2026):
I plan to buy a Heltec to try out off-grid mesh radio communication 💁‍♀️

Anxiety through the roof as I’ve been texting all day with a friend who lives in Dubai.
The Emirates have been under retaliatory missile attack for hours… the first strikes targeted military bases but they have since moved to other targets. The Fairmont Hotel at Palm Jumeirah was hit by debris… my friend reports seeing jets overhead and hearing frequent loud booms.

A month ago there was a lot of buzz on the Fediverse about a new Mastodon server set up by prominent journalists: #TheForkiverse.
There was a rush of sign-ups: nearly 10,000 users in a couple of weeks. People new to the Fediverse, willing to try it out.
It's been hard to gauge how active it still is... so this morning I re-downloaded @nprofile…ccqa so I could browse their local timeline.

Popular YouTube creators hold so much power in raising awareness about alternatives to Big Tech platforms.
I felt hope while watching Johnny Harris's latest video "The Internet Didn't Fail. It Was Taken"... which ultimately launched a new initiative: crowdsourced journalism on a site called NewPress.
Looking at screenshots I thought the site was hosted on #Ghost and thus federated.
Alas it's on SquareSpace and filled with trackers 😭

Apparently my Fedi promo video is giving error messages on YouTube (shocker).
So I just logged on YouTube Studio for the first time in months to see what's going on... and found some interesting comments.
I'm not caffeinated enough to deliver zingers but I hope my response was adequate.
On the upside, I also saw a few comments of people who set up new accounts here, so yay.

Dear Fedi friends, some good news:
Today I learned from @nprofile…h0ux that the Parisian art space @nprofile…0l0e is on the fediverse.
I was curious about the server it's hosted on, so I checked it out and more good news: there are several cultural institutions on it.
Turns out, it's an initiative by the French Ministry of Culture: a Mastodon server to share "cultural news in a way that is freer, open and independent" (their words)!

Unpopular opinion: the silver lining in server outages is that they pull the curtain & reveal some hard truths about who is really behind some services we use... especially stuff we think are alternatives to Big Tech (spoiler: maybe they aren't).
Case in point: last year's #Microsoft outage took out #DuckDuckGo (https://mashable.com/article/microsoft-outage-affects-bing-copilot-duckduckgo-chatgpt).

#Mastodon feature request: you know how you can opt in to a confirmation dialog before you boost a post or you publish media without #AltText?
I think it would be WONDERFUL if there could be a prompt to ask: "are you sure you want to boost this?" when you're about to boost a post that has a picture without #AltText...
Because the "Explore" page makes me a little bit angry when I see EVERY SINGLE DAY the same accounts posting screenshots that do not contain any alt text descriptions. Not cool 😒

I LOVE it that whenever one of the foreign-language narrations of my Fediverse promo video is out, my mentions tab is filled with people enthusiastically talking about it in their own language...
First it was Czech, then Finnish and now German.
Grateful for the "translate" button in Mastodon's web UI... and for that feature being available in Tapbots' Ivory too 😅

Feeling anxious today because... the state of the world.
One thing that I keep thinking about - to maintain hope - is the cyclical nature of history.
The past decade have felt like a modern version of the Middle Ages (or Dark Ages).
But what followed that? The Renaissance and the Enlightenment. The Age of Reason.
I need to read up on all this to cultivate a positive outlook. To stay hopeful.

Today I learned (by accident!) that @nprofile…x9jw browser has a built-in pomodoro + break timer. My reaction: 😍
I was already smitten with Vivaldi, but this takes my love for it to a whole new level.
For aficionadas of the pomodoro technique (like me! I've been using it for a decade now) it's super convenient to have a visual display at the bottom of a browser window about how much time is left for a given pomodoro. Absolutely brilliant.

In case you missed it: I've spent the past two weeks doing all kinds of #selfhosting explorations, as I strive to learn #Docker to move my Ghost site there (it's recommended for Ghost v6 and going forward).

As a clueless self-hosting newbie I often ask for advice here on the Fediverse… and get really helpful feedback but most of the time it reads like a foreign language to me (a non-dev).

To follow-up on my previous toot, knowing how anxious Gen Z and Gen Alpha are about the environmental catastrophe, I think that a lot of youngsters would think twice about using AI tools so frequently... if they knew about the energy consumption involved in their activities (esp. water to cool down data centers).
A text overlay guessing energy consumption for each prompt would be a game changer (as unrealistic as it sounds).
That's just me and my brain's nighttime activity 🥲

Last night I fell asleep listening to the latest episode of the Vergecast, which covered the #GooglePixel 10 phone & how it’s « AI stuffed ».
What did I dream about?
That I was browsing AI-generated photos on my phone. They seemed pointless and absurd (like: a mini car sitting on a car seat).
Then a white overlay appeared on screen, showing the energy consumption it took to generate the photos.
I remember screaming when I read « 100 liters » (22 gallons)… and then I woke up 😐

This space is text-based. And we care about #AltText, inclusivity and accessibility here.
It’s exhausting to keep commenting with #AltTextForYou when you could have as easily copied & pasted the text.
And Fedi people please stop boosting posts that don’t have Alt Text, I beg you

@nprofile…kgua yes I would have expected a different protocol in place, like: stopping the VPS and giving me a warning.
I got none of that. The attack occurred last night at 11pm & I got an email from them in the morning saying they had deleted the VPS and I couldn't be refunded for the 6 months I had paid (I only used it for a day).
For the record, I had followed Docker's instructions to "use TLS to protect the Docker daemon socket" but I must have missed something... oh well, I learned my lesson

I need to become proficient in Docker ASAP in order to move my Ghost CLI site there (if I want it to federate).

That said, I have the utmost admiration for people self-hosting their emails. Bravo!

#3GoodThings from the past 24 hours:
🌊 yesterday it was low tide and my daughter spotted several starfish stranded on dry sand on the beach. We ended up « saving » (aka gently / swiftly moving) 16 of them back to water. They began moving immediately - it was incredible.
📖 last night I read up about starfish on Wikipedia and I’ve been in absolute awe ever since: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starfish
🚶🏻‍♀️this morning I went on a 90 minute walk with my father-in-law and enjoyed beautiful panoramas (see 📷).
