that's a remarkably accurate guess yeah. if I were to dive back into liveaboard life I'd probably budget about $30-40k to do it. sure, it *can* be done on much less, but it's hell the whole time so if one has a full-time[ish] job I dunno that I'd recommend it.

ehhhh. That's a fancy term for what I have going on, but you could call it that.
Right now just the dip bars, ab roller + yoga mat, and the BikeErg. The StrengthErg for chest presses/leg presses/seated rows just arrived an hour ago so I'll assemble that this weekend. Nothing else imminently planned, so it's a mini home gym if anything, that fits into the corner of the spare bedroom.
Might get into some resistance band training in the coming months, but letting my body adapt and form workout habits before committing to much more. Going from no workout routine to any is already a big step, letting that settle in before deciding which branching paths I might want to take.

I haven't gotten around to setting up my dip bars yet but I might have to add these leg raises to the mix when I do, they look very functional and translateable to real world tasks (which, aside from burning off gut fat, is ultimately what I'm after: practical real world fitness that'll be useful when doing outdoors things or DIY project contortions or *whatever*)

did that sort of DIY knife surgery on a foot wart once back in high school. was awful and took like an hour to get the core/root/stem (?) out to prevent regrowth, but it was extremely effective, and free (or I guess, the cost of the Bic lighter I seem to recall sterilizing that pocketknife with? I dunno, it's been a lotta lotta years)
these days I tend to freeze them off with the grocery store cryo kits but that takes a million reps in my limited experience. you're probably still using the more effective method for folks willing to take the (many) risks involved (scars, infections, etc)

Airlines really need to relearn discoverable UX. They co-opted the seatbelt sign overhead to always be on (signaling “our policy is that you have seatbelts fastened at all times when not moving around”), and so now there’s no longer a light to mean “sit down and please don’t move around at all”, which that light used to mean as far as I recall from 5-10 years ago. You have to hope you heard the FA announcement, which if you have headphones on (or for a million other reasons), you probably didn’t.

The Circle K in Ellensburg is like the only convenience store in Washington that has figured out how to have BOTH several gas pumps AND several level 3 (150kW) EV chargers at one facility. Having a car that is electric primary with a gas range extender, I dearly appreciated the one stop shop. Now if only *checks notes* literally anywhere else would get on the bandwagon, that would be great. Only other place I’ve seen gas and several EV rapid chargers in one place was one singular Petrol-Canada in BC

I think what I really want, though, is a way of designing my keyframes in something like Krita, Gimp, Paint, or Inkscape, and then use code (with heavy helper libraries) to describe the transitions between them. Something like:
- Okay in this SVG you'll find some divs with various IDs
- I want you to find the matching IDs in the next keyframe, and animate the transition between them using this curve: (function that is either built into the library, or can be custom to do freaky shit)
- And oh, new IDs? Assume they work like the other circles that already exist, except they need to enter the scene from this (hidden) waypoint
I realize that I'm basically describing game design and probably wouldn't be horribly served by just doing these animation videos in like, Godot or Love2D....................

I have long held that I do not have a single graphic-arts bone in my body - I guess if we say "theatre/sports show design", then I do, but when it comes to actually making art with pixels (or pencils), I'm lost.
So of course, being one who would mess up a stick figure if asked to draw one, a natural way to have spent my Saturday is trying to learn 2D animations from zero principles, for a project that may end up on a jumbotron in front of thousands of people in April :neofox_scream_scared:

For the first time in about 6 years I've fired up a full-blown DAW this evening to muck about with music (and not, say, just some random soft-synth to noodle in isolation), but unlike 6 years ago, I'm trying Renoise tonight instead of Bitwig.
It's real quirky and odd to figure out the shortcuts that are extremely QWERTY-centric (which I don't use), but otherwise, this tracker flow already feels so much better than the mouse-centric flows in Bitwig... and I'm not doing anything especially noteworthy yet.
Bonus thought: I forgot how absolutely excellent the HS Chicago Skyline patch in Hive 2 was. It was always one of my favorite presets in my first go-round trying to learn music prod.

I spent my 3h flight yesterday simply reading books on my Kobo rather than listening to music or hacking on computer things or whatever.
After tiring of Cal Newport’s Digital Minimalism for the day I pivoted over to a book he mentions a few times, and has been on my device for ages - Henry Thoreau’s Walden.
I could really do with a modern, simple English translation of this book. His writing style and word choice and delivery is peculiar and meandering enough even before considering the book’s 180 years of age and ensuing archaic constructions, that rereading a page two or more times to figure out what was said, is not uncommon. That said, the man has some zingers in here.

Oh yeah, I get it. I've become the de-facto RPM packaging guy at work and getting shit to even build in fully-offline mode is routinely a disaster. (and before anyone thinks their language is special or solves this well: it probably doesn't. Even Go is bad at this and uses magic auto-detection voodoo).
I think I'd rather have the package manager, and have it build in shit like repro builds or offline mode or whatever, than not have it. Packaging C shit is nightmare fuel in a different way, and not a better different to me.

A one liner install that is nearly guaranteed to Just Work and spit out a working binary in the end on any system is a dev OR user’s fantasy land, what’s the problem? The Glove80 is kinda notoriously love-it-or-hate-it. I'm a big fan of my Kinesis Advantage 360 Pro, but then, I've been using ortholinear boards for....... idk, a really long time now. In some capacity or another for 8 years I think. So I'm biased AF. (I also use Dvorak, so I guess I'm just proving your argument)
Kinesis did just make a mechanical reimplementation of the MS Sculpt, which was IMO the best staggered keyboard ever designed (and it's not even close), might be worth looking into?

Update #2: Actually this is way more than a "good bit better", this reduced the amount of force I had to apply to the ball by probably a factor of 2, which also eliminates the "I keep ripping the ball out of the fucking socket" problem - turns out that was from the bearing on the right sticking and thus resisting motion and so the ball would ride up the bearing and out of the socket rather than rolling.
Do the cleaning this guy describes every month or two. Holy cow.

So I found this video on cleaning up stiction and gunk on the Adept. The guy had a very similar timeline to me: after ~6mo of use, the device just started feeling awful; a lot of his symptoms of why it started feeling awful are familiar to me. I just used an iFixIt flathead screwdriver bit to do the cleaning method he describes. So far, it feels a good bit better - I mean, I still think the ball is way too tiny and light and wish they'd make an Adept XL for those of us bigger than 5ft 4in or whatever, but... fine. This reset a few months of weirdness.
(this also doesn't fix the etchings into the ball; the ball of the Adept is still on my Axis Of Evil Shitlist to get rid of in favor of a nice sparkly ball like my Elecom Huge and Kensington Expert TB Mouse and my Svalboard all use. But at least now I'm not actively planning to buy a different trackball entirely)

Not sure I'm quite as enamored with my Ploopy Adept trackball after ~6mo as I was on day 1 or even month 1. Or month 3. This is kinda a steadily downgrading experience as the roller bearings get funkier (hard to explain), and unlike my old Ploopy Classic (RIP to the legend, the replacement parts I ordered don't fit so it's really dead), the bearings are actually actively eating away at the ball itself. There are outright etchings beginning to form in the ball. I also get all sorts of weird cases where depending on how I begin a movement, I sometimes rip the ball entirely out of the socket (it's a floating trackball).
It's a shame, it's a generally nice form factor, especially for gaming, but I think I might just be a static bearings guy. My Elecom Huge doesn't eat the trackball up, even after years of use. The trackballs in the Svalboard I've been learning to type on also feel great. And neither of those have the weird directionality problems of the Adept's bearings, either.
The bigger question is probably why my Classic didn't exhibit these behaviors quite as strongly, such that I didn't really even notice them over the years of using it.

Handmade was a blast this year, glad I got to catch all three days in person this time :)
My phone browser is filled with so many tabs to sift through of search terms and websites folks noted to me. The backlog will take days to truly absorb and I am dearly looking forward to it!

Yep. I graduated HS with like a 2.7 GPA despite getting 100% on basically every test in every subject. Principal was bewildered that the kid mostly known for C's and D's and sleeping through all of his non-science and non-band classes was somehow graduating a year yearly, until he poked at the grades breakdowns and was just like "oh, you just don't literally ever do homework, and you're willing to come 0.1% shy of failing a class to keep it that way... whatever, bye"

And getting someone to jump the fence from nights/weekends to full-time, requires that funding, and usually requires some degree of confidence that that funding will be stable for some amount of time. That's human nature - we gotta pay bills/eat.
And so that's why I tend to hold that we can't blanket hold FOSS to "maintainership standards", unless we're offering up funding, up-front, to allow someone to make it their job. (wanted to provide context to my GP comment)

Now, I know your underlying point is that we should be reducing that 95% to, well, some lower number. But I think we've seen that - barring some standout exceptions (Sourcehut, Gleam, SerenityOS, etc.), it's *culturally* extremely difficult, borderline not possible, to fund developers at reasonable rates for FOSS. It's been, what, 7-8+ years since the fiasco with NPM post-install notices asking for donations that got shut down?

Paid open source is a total different ballgame that very, VERY few people are playing. It plays by different rules entirely than what I imagine is 90-95% of FOSS, which is basically folks pitching their nights and weekends in to scratching whatever itches they have.
If someone's paying me for a tool and I've advertised it as a Product ™ and not just a thing you can buy me a beer/coffee for as thanks, then yes, I have customers and responsibilities.
Otherwise I have beer.
