The woodpile is my happy place. Not with a maul, as you have set up, but at a bench with an old iron vice to hold timbers while I saw or split with a smaller hand axe, wedges & lump hammer.
Obvs horses for courses, but it's where I can lose myself for ages.

One Whitsun the Staffs & Worcs canal society had their annual trip to that part of the world.
We did Buckfast Abbey, the Totnes to Dartmouth boat trip and then back to Paignton on the train, with the coach filling in the gaps.
Lovely part of the world.

My dad had a hernia operation ... I dropped him at the hospital then, before I could take my coat off at home, I had the call to come back and collect him again.
It's good that they've got on top of hernias.

Looks like they clenched the nails by knocking them part way through, turn over, bend the nail tip by 90 degrees, knock the nail the rest of the way and finish off knocking the point flat into the wood ... makes the "clench" into a proper hook shape with a buried end that doesn't catch on stuff.

Good grief!
At the height of the Dutch Elm Blight! We lost our (elm) trees with that. But, that said, I've still got elm suckers sprouting and growing to maybe 20/30 feet tall then developing the blight and dying (yes I know about the beetle). I've a couple that wilted this year that'll be logged ready for 26/27 winter, DV.

That phrase "warms us up" ... I tend to include the other movements as well.
As a subset:
From woodpile into a container.
Carry container out of woodshed.
Carry from woodshed to back door.
Carry from back door through house to near fireplace.
From container into the fire.
(This ignores random shuffling of the container on the fireplace but assumes you don't leave all the doors wide open from start to finish!)
From tree to fire it can easily tot up to over 20.

I sailed with my dad along much of the North Devon coast at this time of year in my teens.

Absolutely this!
Hydrangeas would be lovely in my garden except they'd be eaten.
I would have had some Holly bushes to trim years ago had the fresh sprouting tips not been a tasty morsel.
But they don't eat the weeds that are a nuisance.

When my art history group went in 2004(?) I asked our tutor Frances why I did the statue make me feel uncomfortable. She put it into context part of which was that Donatello wanted to emphasise the magnitude of the achievement by a normal human being ... not a superhero.
Later the same day she took us past Mary Magdalene in the museum of the Duomo ...

I use the bridge.
The difficulty I have is finding folk on Bsky I'd like to follow. At the moment it depends on someone bridged to M boosting a post by someone else bridged to M which tends to simply inflate the bubble rather than find fresh topics and thinking. (Or maybe my old Twitter friends.)
But yes ... opt out imposed is naughty imvho.

The team who maintain the dam of #RottonParkReservoir aka #EdgbastonReservoir in Brum uses a larger radio controlled version of this. I watched it one morning crawling sideways across the grassy dam bank ... very impressive. Otherwise they'd have bods with strimmers on it.

My art history group visited Vienna a few years back. It struck me that the H. House, whilst beautifully whacky and of its style, wasn't designed with ease of maintenance in mind.
The building was becoming decidedly in need of TLC.

Iirc for my weekend back in the 1980s I was based at a hotel near Gunnislake ... On the Saturday I caught a bus to Tavistock and walked the length of the Tavistock Canal to Morewellham Quay, diverting along a footpath where the canal dives under ?? Morewellham Down ??
Not sure how I got back to Gunnislake ... Bus? Taxi? Thumbed a lift? On foot?
Either way it was a long wet midsummer's day :)

In the early 1980s I had a weekend exploring the remains of the Tavistock Canal and the Tamar Manure Canal (far more pleasant than it sounds!) which shouldn't be a zillion miles from there.

I visited the Grizedale forest briefly once in the 1980s following the RAC Rally.
We arrived in the middle of the night, kipped down in the car, woke to a frosty dawn & some Audi Quattros zoooooming past then just moved on to the next stage but two.
(Couldn't see them at every stage, obvs, else we'd have effectively been competing with the rally cars :))

Yes ... although the post makes light of it we delve into our family history with our eyes open lest we wish we'd rather not have started.
My great grandfather's father was his mom's uncle (she was a teenager living in as domestic servant to her aunt and uncle ... a cliché), though the birth certificate left the father blank the DNA confirmed the obvious.

It's been only a couple of years since there was talk of fracking in the Forest of Dean, West Gloucestershire.
Thankfully the idea seems to have been dropped.
Not, of course, because anyone pointed out the nearby Severn Estuary with two major road crossings, a rail tunnel beneath and, ahem, two nuclear power stations ... albeit one being decommissioned.

Yes. Puerpural fever killed my great grandmother.
Followed by industrial accidents ... my mom lost a brother and a sister at work, and another brother and her father lost bits of their hands.
Their stories are as important as any to be told, whether received as oral history (to be verified, of course) or by research and discovery.
