@nprofile…uvqr 3/2 in the context of your question, I'd argue that a rich interface such as emacs is sufficiently far from ansi common lisp that it is like Sandewall's CEL: It needs its own specific domain lisp (emacs lisp, as it happens). It's an unfortunate accident of history that linux, basically, is deeply connected to C/C++. My next project is to echo kmp in porting ZWEI emacs from dynamicwindows pre-ansi common lisp to dynamicwindows' modern successor clim spec "clim-lisp" made of commonlisp.

@nprofile…de2h The specific thing I'm currently imagining is like, imagine we just wrote 100 mixins in a problem space where those mixins are useful somehow (alright, I get where you're going with "maybe we could make a fake dog successfully in one case after decades of it-being-about-to-pay-off)
with the theory that an expert human could just pick five mixins to be superclasses, and now the problem is solved, but the robot searches for groups of 10 mixins that are "good-enough" in combination

Another point is that six toots ago, you'll notice there were six layers of abstraction, this is a this in a this in a this which is a this controlled by this in this.
You'll note that six is less than seven (Waters': A function with more than seven arguements doesn't have enough arguements)
And /this/ useage is human-facing, but the robot internally can experiment with (probably modestly) longer chains.

I guess the software individual's proximal best source of information is to watch-me-use-the-slime-repl-when-I-do-things. However, this implies high granularity useage, like

instead of

I realized that I should have two #slime repls open, one running a Sandewallian software individual clisp-repl and one McCLIM running ecl-repl (or what have you) and things are getting weird.
This is because the software individual with a beliefbase about using McCLIM is /not/ the McCLIM lisp image itself, it is a separate lisp image that contains beliefs and actions for using McCLIM in another image. Which is trivial in #emacs with slime. #commonLisp #notThatCommonThoughTeeBeeAitch

My goal was to simply provide lists of names, since I needed non-repeating lists of names for another language. Then, I thought there were countries other than NZ in the 1950s one could get names from. Certainly, it takes some figuring what to do with 250M of Argentinian naming events ;p

A bit of the combative tone comes from today's interview, since I think yduJ's breadth of experience and commentary should be taken seriously.
@nprofile…wy4s and my article make the point (phrased in a loaded way) of big business valuing the replaceable-employee-cog-ness of a language over difficult to specifiy feelings of expressiveness.
I think this conflict bears more investigation and commentary than it receives, but I am optimistic that writing on it does go somewhere

Hey everyone. I must admit, I don't believe I have ever seen someone enter #utf8 #unicode characters on a #computer in a sane way. Which seems weird, because a bunch of languages use them.
I wrote a #commonLisp #asdf package that just looks up a list of symbols in a file that has every non-surrogate unicode codepoint in it, and an #emacs #elisp function that just calls the #lisp one.

There isn't a lot of cost (well, one cons to nil) of using cadr or second instead of cdr. And then you could store other stuff in later positions of the list as well. When I only knew the definitions of assoc and pairlis, I mostly used cdr, but then in lisp code I've read, like you said, the cadr one seems more common in lots of places.

@nprofile…hstv I have to think about what mathematically we're describing happening, but a #McCLIM app where you have a string between two circles you can move around to tauten or relax the string, and can pull the string to an initial position and release it is a cool idea to make. I'll try and write a tutorial/explanation of doing that some time this week, and you can look at it and we can Make Some Adjustments in future.
I guess I might just use #sndfile for the sound eventually.

Original programming for music is I think a central modern art, or should be. Imagine a hundred thousand years ago early humans whittling and playing bone flutes together in caves. This is the fundamental human activity, and we should be doing that modernly as well (but with computer programs instead of bones).
One tricky bit is that music programming is that it is fundamentally mathematical, since music is basically our ears describing Fourier transforms to us.

I do try to share and in some sense illustrate bits that are important to know (if they're what you want to do) that I think are difficult to attain or almost lost knowledge for newcomers, but then I guess sharing things people don't have context for is kind of unapproachable too ;p

Yeah sorry, I read your comic, but then I'm talking about niche Good Old Fashioned AI things. You know how in O Sarilho, the sorta internet they connect to is a person or people. This idea was quite common in research programming, programs being something like long-lived game NPCs.
In the shared-text-adventure-but-it's-actually-real-life LambdaMOO, these NPCs are called puppets. I want to abduct your science fantasy vibes into my real life lisp programming.

Sometimes I treat the player class (called repeatedly-eval-qt) as though it's a different person, but then I also made them into one of my own parents, so I'm a derivative of them. In MOO terms, I guess they are what is called a puppet class (like Emily, from last week).
But it also seems like repeatedly-eval-qt is a "kind of player" rather than a particular player, but they sometimes operate as a particular player. I'm trying to sort these ideas out. 3/2

you have a wide variety of what I see as different player derived classes (ontologically). Zombies, alien-possessed, alien-inhabited-zombie, magic users, technologists, politicians, soldiers, civilians.
Now in my lisp image, I wanted to "run game scripts" basically. So I made a new player class, which could run "in-game" scripts, worked great.
But I was jealous of how productive they were, so I pushed them to my own parents-list. Now I too can run scripts.
