One of the greatest successes into enticing us into trusting politicians is keeping the childish illusion alive that everything will be better "if they would only xyz / if they just xyz" . The illusion makes their promises sound more credible, which feeds again the illusion. A vicious circle of lies and magical thinking which is exploited by all parties, especially when the a certain promise is broken and disillusion happens. Then the next can come with new promises.

The Story of B book is a highly recommendable read, just like the other Ishmael books by Daniel Quinn, i.e. Ishmael & My Ishmael. Each is deeply influential & perspective-widening (or shattering), to say the least.
Alex Leff has very good podcasts on them. But to anybody new to Quinn's writings, I would recommend reading the books first, leave some time to digest and then the podcasts. Graeber's The Dawn of Everything complements all of them.

One person we informed about the environmental impact of #ai reacted at first shocked and thought it was some kind of conspiracy theory. She had just came from an AI seminar and had never heard about this. After a few arguments she was convinced.
AI seminars are being offered everywhere. But few people are actually informed of the exponentially growing #energy and #water quantities AI requires.

I agree, coverage is and will be further limited.
But government coverage for all risks seems from my perspective also not realistically manageable, even if political will was available.
However, IMO it’s an illusion to believe that govs will be able to adequately manage risk and protect their people from the consequences of the many crisis we face, most especially if members of the govs are deeply divided in accepting the bare existence of such crisis.

But of course reinsurers are free to decide if they cover a specific risk or not, this creates insurers also pulling out of they can’t cover themselves to avoid insolvency if it happens. In such cases a risk coverage gap opens. The question is then, who should close it and how and at what cost.

The secondary insurance market acts internationally (risk diversification) and is the one jumping in case of such large scale scenarios. I.e. premiums gathered for coverage of catastrophes worldwide which didn’t occur are used to pay out the ones that did.
A gov wouldn’t have this possibility, not without recurring to a secondary insurance market. Thus, as single risk carrier, risk considerably increases for the gov.

One clarification 1st: I don’t refer to health insurance in this whole exchange.
That said, imagine all losses from a mega-hurricane in Florida or the mega-earthquake in California or both together are claimed, leading to the gov having to raise taxes nationwide to cover the gaps. Sadly I doubt the people in other states will agree to that, even if it could be them on the line next time.
What happens with insurance for companies? Also in government control?

At cost means knowing the future. No model is perfect, the world and risks continually change, premiums are calculated w past statistics but can’t predict the future.
Insurers re-insure to transfer risk. Risk is borne by many insurers. Will governments carry all and ultimate risks? What happens if gov reduces coverage to save budget?
Another interesting question is if it’s fair for the poor to insure with their own risk wealth accumulated by the rich?

I agree that private health insurance is very problematic.
But I think saying that non-life insurance companies compete by denying claims only is too narrow. They compete also through premiums, conditions of coverage and service including how they deal with claims (affecting reputation too). Customers can freely decide to go with one or the other or switch if unsatisfied.

I find it inherently incorrect because it focuses exclusively on Trump, i.e. as if the only meteor is Trump.
In reality we don’t have a single meteor but are pushing the planet deeper into an asteroid belt, attracting more and more meteors into it, and Trump is one big huge rocket of many others pushing us farther into it.

It can be many: A deliberate trick to lead votes away, get funding money or a vacuum trying to be filled because big parties are indeed not doing enough.
The last case is not uncommon. The problem relies on the myth that “green” politics should be done by “green” parties. Conservatives love it because they avoid such politics and have someone to hate and others believe it and hate it because they’re reminded of their own gaps.

The assumption that rejecting to follow false hope leads directly to doomerism is not only fallacious but misleading and in a way also plays for business as usual.
We need to look at our predicament in the eye even if it’s not easy, not pretend it’s better than it is. But only then can we be able to take action as is needed, primarily in mitigation but also in adaptiation.

Amazing how many articles related to the UN Emission Gap Report 2024 still talk about 1.5 C still being „possible“.
Just because it’s still mathematically possible to calculate the needed emission reduction rate it doesn’t mean that it’s an achievable scenario, even under the most optimistic of assumptions.
The world is still increasing global GHG emissions. Not even started yet to reduce them.

Good analogy. I would just add one main difference: #Milton will end, however horrible loss and damage it will bring. But it will definitely end, even if the damage and effects are longer lasting for some than for others.

Interesting view, I’ve never looked at this cartoon this way.
The intention of the cartoon is not to propose solutions but summarise arguments used to delay action, even if some appear to be a solution or could even be part of a solution.
Unfortunately there isn’t any silver bullet. We know we need to stop burning fossil fuels / change behaviour and fast. The IPCC provided guidance how. Easier said than done

Denial is imo already totally obsolete at the decision making level. Of course they still push it to keep the most fact-resistant right wing voters entertained.
But the current tactic now is denying #ClimateChange is bad, laughing at the term #ClimateCrisis. In parallel tech fairytales are told to make believe it will all play out fine, that it’s under control.

Spot on. I tell my kids all the time that with advertising someone is trying to make them want something so that someone can get their (or their parents’) money or time. Always, without exception.
This doesn’t shield them fully from advertisers but I hope this gives them some elements to resist or at least better interpret the constant rain of ads they’re continuously exposed to.

In my view capitalism can coexist with any political system which provides access to capital in the electoral and political process
The political system accepted in most countries and what many sadly understand as true democracy is a representative democracy in which voters elect parties and capital gets access to those parties thus trumping the initial interests of the voters. This system has a tight symbiosis with capitalism.

Anyone equaling climate action to nuclear energy must clarify how nukes can be deployed fast, how will they avoid burdening future generations with nuclear waste, and how will they avoid nuclear proliferation.

That’s interesting.
When resting in the woods during a walk I really enjoy to grab a bit of humid hummus and smell it. I always tell my kids it smells like life.

A #wildlifepond is a #biodiversity booster.
There are so many rewarding aspects of having a small pond. One of them I particularly like is when dragonfly larva emerge from it or dragonflies deposit their eggs in it.

Cities could be more considerate about #biodiversity.
A simple measure would be to adapt their garden „maintenance“ schedule and wait until blooming season is over.
A next step would be to leave areas without mowing to allow for small animals to retreat and find food and shelter.

Look into the Messmer Plan. Indeed FR ramped up their fleet very fast, in a completely undemocratic way, and without involvement of Parlament or the public based on a state operated & backed industry with strong military-industrial link. Such a ramp up seems to me not replicable in today’s Western democracies. Many nuke advocates use it as an example of how fast it was done. But I prefer to look at how fast it is actually done today.
