been reading a lot about digital minimalism lately, and i think i want to try it, but i'm so uniquely terrified of a life offline that i don't know if i reasonably *could* without just being so ... anxious?
i rely on internet for my music streaming. i rely on internet for my friends and partners. i rely on internet for my video games. i love my iphone, it plays all my music. i love my iphone, it's how i kiss my girlfriends goodnight. i love my computer, she is my friend and i want to take care of her.
i am so engrained into all of this that even if i left, what do i gain? if i log out of fedi, of twitter, do i gain anything? or do i just lose out on all my friends who solely exist here? who do i have experiences with? if i log out of discord, who will i talk to? who will i plan things with?
how does one disconnect when they've been using skype to play minecraft since they were 8?

Hey fedi, I have a strange workflow that I'm trying to achieve here, and I need some pointers on making it work
What I'm trying to do is automate the conversion of my music library from FLAC to an iPod-ready format. I download a lot of FLAC, and I want my music to be iPod-ready without me having to rely on third-party apps (e.g. Swinsian, Foobar2K) for iPod syncing. I keep all of my music on a network share, though, and very rarely does my library leave it, so I want it to be easy to automate (preferably within Docker, since it'll
be running on an unRAID box).
Here's my end-goal: create a workflow chain that creates a perfect copy of my library in a separate folder, just converted entirely to an iPod-compatible lossy format (like MP3 or AAC). My sub goals for this project are as follows:
- Maintains 1:1 folder/file structure
- Retains all *useful* metadata (artist, album, itunes_compilation, date/year, etc.) while stripping away 'useless' metadata (musicbrainz ids, release media, etc.) - the iPod only has 128MB of RAM and it *will* load every single tag into memory)
- preferably 100% fully automated. I don't ever want to think about having to manually run a final step; I only want to manage one music library, so if a new album or song is added, it gets automatically converted into the *new* library as well
I hope this all makes sense. Any pointers in the right direction would be very, very useful!!! <3

alright. for real, this time, I think I'm finally done with lastfm. like, for real, I'm done. and fuck spotify wrapped and apple music replay and all of that BS, too.
I don't know if it's OCD or something else, but the amount of pain and frustration and agonizing it has given us is awful, and we hate it, and we never, ever want to go back to it.
i have never felt more convinced in my life that this constant tracking of play stats - whether through lastfm or statsfm or even just spotify wrapped or whatever - is quite literally one of the worst things to ever happen to the modern music space.
i hate feeling like everything i listen to is a part of a game. i hate feeling like music has a score, that i can achieve. that i can do better at if i listen to that song, or that artist, more. no one should ever listen to music for the sole purpose of being that artist's "#1 listener" for that year or whatever. it's all just continued bullshit designed to increase Engagement™ on platforms that directly profit off of said Engagement™. it's fake, it's artificial, and most of all, it takes away from one of the most meaningful art forms in the world, and turns it into a Competition of Consumption.
i was happier without all of this. i listened to whatever i wanted without fear of judgment, or worse, fear of *missing stats*. i went from happily listening to a song for three hours straight to spending every one of those minutes worried that "those plays won't count" or whatever. and that fucking sucks! that's fucking miserable!! no one should ever have to live like that!!!!
art isn't a Game. you can't turn art into a Game. the longer i live like this the more I realize that it's so aggressively anti-art to boil music listening down to just fucking numbers like this.
so i refuse. i'm done.
so maybe i'm stupid, and overblowing it. maybe a normal, well-adjusted person can handle these kinds of things well. but i know that i can't, and i know so many other people (especially neurodivergent folks) that can't, either.
music was never meant to be numbers. it wasn't meant to be play counts or listener stats or whatever the fuck a "scrobble" is. so, consider this my last "fuck you".
all scrobbling-related tools will be removed from my website within the coming days.
i'm done.
oh, and fun fact: did you know that lastfm is currently owned by Paramount, the company currently trying to suck off the fascist regime to allow them to create a media and news monopoly? just thought that was fascinating :)

i have a normal and healthy relationship with the concept of food
stressed about cooking, stressed about ordering out, stressed about eating, stressed about not eating. I haven't eaten in 24h and I do have food at home but I don't have any of the energy needed to clean so I can cook because I have not eaten in 24 hours
I could spend $15 on pizza and pasta and maybe then everything would be okay but I will only feel financial guilt, to the same extent that I would if I posted my ko-fi, because I do not fundamentally deserve to take from people to fuel unhealthy eating habits

Fedi will never replicate what twitter had. Bluesky will never replicate what twitter had. what twitter had was *special*, and entirely circumstantial; any attempt to recreate it verbatim will only ring hollow. it was a happy accident and any attempt to build something like it with intention will inevitably fragment and lose the magic
and it's not a matter of, like, "we're fedi, we don't want to be twitter, so this is good"; it's that fedi is actively held back by twitter-like design decisions yet lacking in that same magic that made twitter *work*. it is trying to be "twitter but better" and is failing at both of those things
it is so easy to convince ourselves that twitter was always this shithole, a cesspool, but it *wasn't* always like this. not more than any other social media site, fedi included. I can only really miss what was had, because we'll never see anything like it again

about to go to sleep, but we've finished Shadow Generations, and played around with Sonic Generations (remaster). Here are our thoughts. I guess this is a "review"?
Sonic X Shadow Generations is a weird game to really talk about, because it's a kind-of-incompetent remaster of a fantastic game, and a new fantastic game on top of it.
Shadow Generations is absolutely fantastic. A great campaign to go alongside base Generations.
The problem is that the remaster of Sonic Generations is...really, really not great. Not terrible - certainly serviceable! - but not great. Framerate dips, loading time issues, new (minor) visual bugs. These are *tolerable*. It's not a bad way to play the game, but it's a little annoying. The game's also capped at 60 FPS, despite Shadow Generations being capped at 120 FPS. Baffling decision, but it is what it is - the core gameplay of Sonic Gens is largely intact and still as fun as it always was, if not inferior to the original game with mods.
What's *bad*, however, is the absolutely puzzling rewriting of the script.
The story is the same, the *cutscene animations* are largely he same, but the original game's script has been replaced with dialogue that feels shoehorned in and hastily dubbed over. They didn't adjust timings, or even *lip-syncings*, for new lines, so oftentimes character movements or talking just...doesn't line up with what they're *saying*.
Generations already didn't have the best story or writing. Our initial hope was that the story would be given new plot beats, new cutscenes. New things that would patch some plotholes and tie up loose ends from the original. Instead, we got new dialogue poorly dubbed over old cutscenes that don't do anything to clarify any parts of the story, and arguably make it *worse!* It feels like a fanfic writer trying to rewrite the game, and it's worse off for it. At least the story is *still* nothing to write home about, so, just like in the original game, you're not really missing anything if you skip the cutscenes altogether.
If you haven't played Sonic Generations before, then it's a solid way to try it. If you have, then Shadow Generations is a *phenomenal* follow-up that practically makes the game worth the price on its own. But if you already own Sonic Generations' original PC release, then Sonic X Shadow Generations isn't going to replace it any time soon.

there is so much art to love out there and the ways in which people rebel and do things on their own terms are all we have and it is so, so depressing. just to get a computer that doesn't feel like the software is trying to kill you, you have to either:
- mod Windows to hell and back for 2 hours and hope it doesn't break
- learn an entirely new OS that's still difficult to navigate for new users
- spend four digits on an expensive, impossible-to-repair device
and that's not counting how little control you have over your phones, either, or the illusion of choice as Android and iOS start to look more and more identical with each passing day
we are constantly dependent on services rendered by and hardware manufactured by companies that have absolutely zero interest in making things last for a long time. everything - software, hardware, music, movies, stories, and with social media, even the concept of fucking basic communication - is fucking *disposable*
nothing lasts forever. this is true, and this is one of the many things that creates value in art. but it's another thing entirely to treat it with such little respect, and then to try and actively make the world hostile to anyone who tries to preserve that little bit of freedom and security

We're about to have our god damn joker moment over the modern music landscape. So many things have gone wrong that it got us considering throwing everything away and just using the Nintendo 3DS Sound app like god intended
- Apple Music decided to lie to us and serve us "lossless" music that was, in fact, clearly not lossless. There were fucking compression artifacts that were *audible* in the high-end
- We spent several fucking *days* fixing our LastFM metadata just for it to ignore all of our corrections
- While we were drafting our vent posts about that, it *scrobbled the same song twice* -- with *DIFFERENT METADATA FOR EACH SCROBBLE*
- our Apple Music 'heavy rotation' mix has decided that song we listened to a total of three times in the past week was somehow in our 'heavy rotation'
the modern music landscape fucking sucks and i hate it. we let music streaming take over and now there's no easy way to transfer music from Device A to Device B because we tried to make everything cloud-based and server-side, so now the entire act of listening to music is practically gate-kept by a single company majority-owned by major record labels that hasn't turned a profit in 18 years and every other service is trying to copy just to fucking compete with it
lastfm and statsfm and airbuds and spotify wrapped and other services like letterboxd and anilist have done nothing but make the act of enjoying music - or any other type of fucking *art* - a competitive fucking sport where you can't listen to something genuinely without either worrying about how your stats are counted or whether people will judge you for your tastes
all we can do is either suck it up or rebel in our own little ways that get shittier and harder as time goes on while we fucking suffer and die and everything there is to love gets eaten up by corporate interests
