Maybe this simplification will help some people: Modern LLMs (Large Language Models) *interpolate* based on training data that is locked in time. They can uncover sometimes surprising connections that weren't "seen" before, but did exist already. What they can not do is *extrapolate*, as in creating new knowledge, what we humans call creativity, inspiration, lightbulb moments. Thus LLMs are like The Matrix, an artificial virtual world that cannot make progress. It's stuck in time

ActivityPub posts can contain HTML. Some clients/implementations allow you to compose a post in Markdown, which gets converted to HTML before it is being sent out. This HTML gets rendered when displayed on the timeline. Mastodon unfortunately does not allow to compose a post that way, though it will happily render posts that arrive as HTML. @npub10ar…z8mg

The business model of Tinder etc. isn't to find you the love of your life, it's to keep you on their site, making you pay for as long as possible.
The business model of Big AI isn't to solve your problems with the least amount of tokens. It is to keep you close enough to *think* you might soon have the solution while you keep on spending more and more tokens.
Both (and many other services) make their money based on hope, not on results. That's my opinion.

Legal experts question how Trump could grant an extension of up to 90 days as the law is in effect and its validity confirmed by SCOTUS. The 90 days can only be granted if a new US based owner is in the process of closing the negotiations.

Wrote a little script based on the cssh version at [1] to check who is trying to abuse my little forgejo instance. Russia and someone using Google Cloud. Fits. These IPs are now blocked and I will block new ones automagically with that script.

This also means that I keep my forge hidden from the public, thus reducing traffic to it. I had it open for a few hours and in a matter of seconds the AI scraping bots and other scripts started hitting it. Traffic shot up to ridiculous levels. I didn't want to take care of all that shit, so I locked it down again. I am using #codeberg as a kind of proxy now. I mirror some repos there, so everyone can get the code there. Best I can do for now :(

It isn't that far-right has suddenly become a big movement in Europe. The far-right support has always been and will always be around 20%. The task of society is to keep that support in the "morally unacceptable" box that is buried deep in the ground. Clickbait, polarisation supported by technofascism and Putins money and methods for destabilisation in democracies however are the most powerful attack against that equilibrium I have ever experienced. And we are losing.

So @npub1fh7…ee83 suffered from high traffic, bringing the site almost down. They managed to fix it by blocking access to one repo that attracted all this traffic for reasons (as of now) unknown to us.

I guess the hope is that the occupied territories become some sort of neutral zone with Ukraine demanding full demilitarisation of said territories, maybe even some sort of free trade status with Ukraine. We will see. But things are moving, which is the only way forward, IMHO. A perpetual war is no solution.

So. To sum it up. Licenses are defined and limited by laws on intellectual property. Moral decision on who you accept and support in your community are a very different thing. Never conflate the two, if you want to be a good FOSS citizen. If you feel your code gets used in ways you cannot accept, exclude those that do it from your community. Let them fork, let them find their own community. It's the price you have to pay. Just be clear and open to your people on that. 7/n

You can always refuse to support use of your code in fields you do not want to support. But limiting access to the code should not happen. You share, you care. But your care has limits. But it was a wise decision, IMHO. Think of the faux open licenses that exist out there. Licenses that give you access to the source code but tell you that you cannot use it to build a service competing with the project owners. That's the other side of the choice. If use gets limited, Open looses. So field of use restrictions will always lead to less code being available to be re-used. That's why the "no field of use restriction" rule exists. 5/n

Software is universal. Your solution to recognising objects in a video stream with low latency can be used, as you intended, to help with sorting good from bad vegetables. Or it could be used to identify targets by a missile flying at high speed. These are extreme examples of Field of Use. The question becomes: Should a license allow the one but not the other? If you would restrict the use of your code, you make a moral decision. But licenses are in the opinion of both the FSF and the OSI not the place to make that choice. Licenses are defined and limited by the laws and rules on copyright/droit d'auteur. Moral choices are simply out of scope for that regime. Like to or not, it's a fact, IMHO. 2/n

EU citizens living in a different EU country (like me, a dutch person, living in Germany) do not have full voting rights, but we can vote on the municipal level and for the EU parliament. Thus it logically follows that if we have at least these limited voting rights, we should definitely be allowed to be active as members of a political party. The court has made this very clear in its decision. #ThanksEU

So as a rule of thumb, prior art should be provably (which is another problem, how do you prove the publication date of prior art) available around 12 months before the filing date to avoid problems.

Yes, it's complicated. Priority date isn't always the filing date. E.g. in Europe I could file a patent application on the 1st of June 2023 in Belgium and then decide to file another one for France in June 2024. The priority date for the French application would than still be June 2023, as it is based on the *first* filing of the patent in Belgium. There are even weirder rules and exceptions.

- Patents also protect retroactively (12 months before filing date in most jurisdictions), meaning that prior art that could invalidate the patent must be publicly known before that priority date
- Most patent cases don't go to court, far more often some kind of deal with license payments is offered to avoid that
I am not a lawyer, but I am quite an expert in the patent field since 2002 when I joined the fight against software patents in the EU.

Should you read about a patent case somewhere, here's the things you should know:
- design patents are NOT patents. They are more like registered designs.
- the *only* important thing about a patent are the claims. You can safely ignore all the descriptions, graphics and other stuff. Read the claims. The first one is the most important
- Patents expire after 20 years (or missed fee payment, whichever comes first)

One of the patents they tried to monetise came from Nokia (filed 2008, granted 2010), was transferred to France Brevets (2013), who in turn transferred it to Burley Licensing LLC, Texas (2021), who in turn moved it to Nimitz Technologies LLC, Texas, 14 days later which finally sued 11 companies for patent violation. They didn't succeed in court. The patent is US 7,848,328 B2 and the claims are as vague as you would expect ;)

Ad on YouTube that claims that a simple oximeter can measure blood sugar, blood pressure and more. Ad uses the logo of the famous Charité hospital in Berlin. That hospital has a dedicated page on their website [1] warning about this scam. I report it to Google as being a misleading ad that makes false claims. Well.

Could be extended to the
#CDIA — Consumer Data Information Act
that forces all companies that have data about the consumer to send a notice, via the consumers preferred method of contact (e-mail, post) about the fact that they have data stored and the rights under #GDPR to receive said data or give notice about the consumer’s right to delete said data and how to do exactly that.

Clients (be it the web UI or any mobile client) could implement whatever editor for whatever format but send the plain text version and their try of the internal representation that the instance will try to interpret (and sanitise) and if that fails, fall back to the plain text variant.

My approach would be simple. Federation in both directions in/out with html. Incoming posts never need to be edited. So input parsing could result in a defined intermediate state after sanitisation, which gets stored on the instance. Rendered to html when showing or federating. So for editing you have the internal representation. My preference for that internal state would be markdown, obviously ;)

I will not give up hoping (and nudging ;). I know that yous have agreed that the glitch-soc approach isn’t feasible. But some sort of input wrangler solution that allows for posts containing the formatting that mastodon already renders for HTML posts coming in through federation would be much appreciated.

Yesterday, as on every Friday, I updated my public servers. This time I was on the train, so a bit of a flaky connection. I am old school, so I logged in to my machines, started a `screen` session and ran the `def update`there. This way I could be reasonably sure it would work even if my connection breaks.

Not so good: RJ75 Train from #Brno to #Vienna had a 70 minute delay, so I missed the connection in Vienna and had to switch to the RJ268 from Vienna to #Munich, where I had no seat reservation anymore and the train is crowded. Klar, noch sind Schulen und Universitäten gebührenfrei. Aber lasst uns mal realistisch sein. Die Kosten für Schule und Uni sind weit höher als null. Egal ob es um die Wunschliste der Grundschule geht welche Farben und Stifte man kaufen soll, wie teuer die Bücher für Unis sind - Ausbildung ist teuer.

Pflegeversicherung
Ursprünglich (IMHO) als Verschleierung der zu erwartenden Kosten für die Rentenversicherung geplant, wird es uns in Zukunft richtig in den Hintern beissen. Mehr ältere Leute werden mehr Pflege brauchen und die Preise steigen exorbitant, während ds "alte" System von "Familie wird sich schon kümmern" wegen der Alterspyramide nicht mehr greifen wird.

Zu den einzelnen Punkten:

Das deutsche Rentensystem momentan und seit SEHR vielen Jahren ist "linke Tasche, rechte Tasche". Die Einnahmen aus den Gehaltsabgaben gehen mit nur geringer Reserve in die Rentenauszahlungen. Das ist mit der sich ändernden Alterspyramide nicht vereinbar auf mittlerer Sicht. Privatisierung der Rente ist kein Ausweg, IMHO.

Als etwas älterer Mitbürger möchte ich den jungen Wählern nur mal kurz die Liste der seit Jahrzehnten ungelösten, geflickschusterten Themen für die nächste Wahl mitgeben:
- Rente in Anbetracht der zukünftigen Alterspyramide
- Pflegeversicherung
- Lehrmittelfreiheit die nur theoretisch existiert
- Ein würdiges Auskommen ohne Einkommen
- Medizinische/psychische Versorgung ohne zerstörerische Wartezeiten.
Wählt entsprechend. Lasst Rassismus und Populismus aussen vor, OK?

IMHO: Biden allowing #Ukraine to fire missiles deep into Russian territory is a smart move. Should Trump decide (he will) to undo that decision, it will be seen as Trump doing Putins bidding and he will seem weak to the (not only US) military brass.

Another reason for staying here is metadata. Trust me, not many organisations out there really care about the content of your posts. They focus far more on the connections and frequency of data on likes, boost, follow/unfollow etc. In a centralised service that metadata is, ohm, centralised too and easy to access. In a federated network that isn't that easy, especially when, like me, you live on your own instance and not a big one like mastodon.social. Decentralisation makes abuse expensive.

My private communication happens via Signal or old fashioned pen and paper. Or, even more often, by direct communication over a coffee, beer or a walk outside :)

Because here I am on my own instance, hosted in the EU, and not on a centralised service from the US (which both Bluesky and Threads are) where soon a Trump government is installed that can easily force both Bluesky and Threads to hand over full access to all my data. Yes, many people in the western world grew up being told that The Government was good and though some corrupt elements existed, that would be solved. Many could never imagine how even well meant systems can be abused to turn against those they are supposed to protect. That blind eye can have real and dangerous consequences. I am not a doom person. But I notice, similar to you, maybe a bit earlier when things move in a wrong direction.

IMHO: If you want to fight (proto-)fascism and centralised, authoritarian regimes by relying on centralised infrastructure that can be blocked/outlawed by said regime, you are doing it wrong, IMHO. Decentralised solutions, while coming with a more demanding learning curve, have proven to be far more resilient and sustainable. So. A young woman has been sentenced to pay 4000€ because she supposedly attacked police agents at a protest against fascists in Manmheim, Germany. I advised her to get a lawyer and take it to court. Which means she is facing a financial risk of around 6000€. which she doesn’t have. If I would start a gofundme to help her, would you chip in?
