Some people are about to remember how much the internet sucks ass when unfiltered.

@nprofile…8udl From what I've worked with, Python is only a tiny bit faster or slower when it comes to execution. The memory requirement tends to slowly grow rather than explosively demand a lot from the start like Ruby/RoR did. Also, you're right about almost no one using Django anymore unless it's like a small-ish site because it doesn't really scale unless you pull every trick to keep it performant, and at that point I'm pretty sure resource requirements start shooting up (Redis, CDNs, etc.). Even the Python micro frameworks like Flask or FastAPI start choking a lot sooner than something coded in Go or Rust once the requests shoot up.

@nprofile…8udl In my experience, Ruby has a always been a terrible programming language when it came to speed, and combining it with Ruby on Rails always used a ton of resources. So the only way to compensate is using oversized servers.

@nprofile…8udl Isn't this why pretty much every small server out there is a Pleroma instance or something similarly fast and low on resource usage?

Imagine being inside a burning forest, trying to escape the flames, lost with no visibility, choking on smoke, and then you see this thing coming towards you wielding a chainsaw. No one would blame you for thinking hell has spilled onto earth.

One of my coworkers admitted he can no longer do software development without AI, and I have to fix AI slop another team made... It's so bad it defines the same function 22 times... To do something that is part of the standard library... :akko_eew2:

@nprofile…cext As far as I understand it, he needed a soul that fulfills specific conditions to make a new painted world.
You time travel to the end of everything and he thinks your soul is adequate, probably because he went mad from searching for so long.
When you kill him, it turns out his soul was the one that was perfect to build a new painted world.
He had what he had been searching for after an eternity of slaughtering others.

Man, any system that slowly hides posts because they get down-voted is a cancerous anti-discussion echo chamber generator.
Some of the most informative messages or best arguments I've seen get buried because they were replying to someone who got down-voted into oblivion.

@nprofile…ln70 I can see how the argument could be made that FOSS is democratic, in the sense that it puts some degree of power over it and its outcomes in the hands of people. But without knowing under what conception of "democracy" or "democratic" are you finding that absurd, it's also impossible to argue why that position might not be absurd.

Is there any way of remotely sharing your screen on a #wayland PC to another computer on the same local network or is this yet another use case that is woefully behind solutions that worked on X.org?

2024-12-17 06:55:39 UTC

@nprofile…ynjf Yeah, I know that approach for closed source software. But I was wondering if an open source software under the GPL2 would consider external documentation that you write by reading it as GPL2-licensed or if it only applies to code and then you would be free to use said documentation under any other license.

2024-12-16 21:51:35 UTC

If one uses GPL2 driver code as reference to write documentation for hardware, and then someone (or the same person) uses the documentation to write drivers in a different language for the same hardware, would it need to use the same license or can you slap some other license like GPL3 or whatever on the new code? :thinking_cirno:

My Android phone just notified me that the 'Find My Device' functionality will now use the Bluetooth of other phones to locate my device (and by extension my device's BT to find others)
It sounds like a cool idea until you realize it's also near constant surveillance of your location. It's also opt-out.
Is there any option left for Android phones that comes with no Google shit by now?

2024-06-14 23:52:36 UTC

Has anyone ever attempted to make a P2P social media site that is a bit more like bittorrent?
Something like servers "seeding" posts and other servers downloading them and seeding them (temporarily or permanently) when they repeat them or interact with them.
And if you wanted to embed the messages outside of the network you either have to screenshot them or host your own instance to show them on online newspapers?
Or would this be too complicated to implement?

2024-05-08 21:40:38 UTC

- reply

@npub1wc2…4sk7 That's what I ended up doing, but the fact that even GNOME implemented pointer barrier and re-centering on Wayland and KDE did not is a bit surprising considering KDE usually prioritizes functionality over polish.

2024-05-08 05:46:13 UTC

So if I wanna play a game on a multimonitor setup on Linux my options are:
* Use GNOME, watch it warn me constantly that the game has frozen (it has not, it just doesn't report back to GNOME)
* Use KDE, watch pointer wander into the other screen because of the lack of functioning pointer confinement.

#[0] Large language models are kinda garbage, though. I had more hope for the AI diagnosis systems that actually looked at your symptoms and lab results, but I haven't heard anything about them after they touted superior rates of correct diagnoses.
