I filed my taxes last weekend and there's a spot on the US federal tax return for "Occupation" and friends, I still legitimately feel a thrill putting "Scientist" in that box. Every. Single. Time.
There are things that are shitty about it, it's a job like any job, sometimes you don't wanna, and then there's now (!), but if you asked me when I was FIVE what I wanted to be when I grew up, that was the answer. I'm living the dream. It's a stress dream right now, yes, but it's the dream.

(It is much less characteristic of me that they are named. I was an extremely literal child—my teddy bear was called Teddy Bear until it got too beat up to repair and had to be retired to a shelf, after which it was called Old Teddy Bear and its replacement New Teddy Bear—but for historical reasons, the classic starter became named Johnny, and so obviously the buckwheat starter is Bucky.)

They need to have the blood in units so that they know how much they're giving a patient. Often when a patient is getting a transfusion, it's an emergency, so they want to grab "one unit" and not have to think about how much is in the container. (They already have to think about blood type.)
I donate platelets, and they will take a single, double, or triple depending on the donor's platelet count and how well they tolerate the procedure. (I can only do singles but I go often.)

Which they're not, because the government is shut down, so the NIH "study sections" that review them are not meeting. All of which means that our lab is running out of money. I literally can't do the experiments that I want (and have prepared) to do because I can't order reagents.

Recently it's more the foredrop, though. My big grant ran out and the renewal was scored quite well the LAST time the Republicans fucked up government funding, so even though it got quite a good score (11th percentile, where lower is better, which would normally be an obvious fund), they wound up not funding it and giving us a 1-year extension. Which ran out a couple months ago.
Meanwhile, current paylines are supposedly at like 5th percentile, even if grants were getting reviewed. …

A note on the word "biscuit."
The US use of the word is etymologically incorrect. AND SO IS THE BRITISH ONE! It's from roots that mean "twice baked," and if the Italians could be bothered to even notice our food kerfuffles at all, they'd be over there giving us side eye because biscotti actually ARE. "Ship's biscuit" was a form of hardtack, US biscuits and UK biscuits are both named that because they reminded someone slightly of actual biscuit, stop fronting like anyone is "right" here.

Eventually, a bigger mutation that removed an entire broken gene, or several of them, made a version of our ancestor with a little less DNA to copy each time a cell divided. And it could spend that tiny bit of extra energy on reproducing faster. And it did. Still no balancing cost, because it had to eat anyway. Before you know it (on evolutionary timescales), the whole species needed niacin in its diet.

We eat living things, and as mentioned, every cell in every one of them contains these chemicals.
So some ancestor of ours had a mutation that broke a gene required to make niacin, but they and their children were fine, because they got all the niacin they needed just by eating enough fruit and leaves and meat and seeds to survive. And without that selection pressure, additional mutations accumulated in the genes of that pathway. (7/n)

But the fact that they look quite different from other things we normally make, chemically, means that it's kind of a pig to make them. It takes a lot of energy and a whole complicated system, with multiple genes that need to be copied and maintained and transmitted, just to make each one. All of which increases the energy required to grow and reproduce.

Niacin and riboflavin both have these complicated ring systems with at least one nitrogen and lots of delocalized double bonds, so they're pretty flexible about how they configure their electrons. This makes them very useful for redox reactions, and they are used to shuttle electrons around by, as far as we can tell, absolutely every living cell that has ever done biochemistry. For a lot of cells, the ability to make these bad boys is completely necessary for life. (5/n)

Now, a common feature of your proteins and nucleic acids is that they're pretty stable, as these things go. Particularly to oxidation and reduction. And what "stable" means in this regard is that it takes (or releases, depending) a lot of energy to oxidize or reduce them. This is great when you need them to stick around. But if you want to catalyze oxidation/reduction ("redox") reactions, you need a chemical that's pretty close to equally happy in either oxidized or reduced state. (4/n)

Vitamins tend to have chemical properties that make them good for catalyzing reactions that the "normal" chemicals available to your cells—the RNA and the various amino acid side chains found in all your proteins—aren't good at.
A great example is niacin and riboflavin. These are used by every cell in your body for reactions where other chemicals are oxidized (= have electrons removed) or reduced (= have electrons added). Oxidizing sugar and reducing oxygen, say, to harvest energy. (3/n)

They mostly have chemical properties that enable them to be used as catalysts. By definition, a catalyst is something that participates in a reaction but is returned unchanged at the end, so you reuse them and only need enough to top up what you lose of your supplies to entropy. This evening's biochemistry info dump (because that's a thing I do) is "Vitamins: why even are they?"
Vitamins are, of course, chemicals (or "small molecules" because when you're used to thinking about DNA and proteins, something with 20 carbons and 3 or 4 fused rings is a small molecule) that you need to have in your diet, in relatively small amounts, or you will get sick and eventually die. That's the "vita" part of the name; they were named when they figured out they were vital. (1/n)

I may have mentioned this here before, but our common fruit flies are really yeast flies. They'd starve if they tried to eat only sterile fruit. The reason they're so interested in fruit is that that's where yeast grows, in nature. Rotting fruit is mostly rotting with various yeast species. Lay your eggs on fresh fruit because that's where rotting fruit comes from.
Consequently, when I feed the sourdough, the fruit flies around our compost collection bowl become EXTREMELY interested!

Blackberries are juicy, so toss them with a thickener so they don't sog up the topping. I like arrowroot starch, but flour or cornstarch are also classic. Some people swear by tapioca flour.
Sift in some spices and a little brown sugar while you're at it?
I like streusel for a crisp: 1 cup flour mixed w/ 2/3 cup light brown sugar, then cut in 1/2 cup salted butter til crumbly. That's about a 9x13" pan worth. 375°F for 30–40 m, til it's bubbling and the topping's browned.

The thing that makes me crazy about machine learning in science is that if I said in my Methods section, "I looked at all the data and decided which ones were affected" I'd be crucified in peer review, while if I said, "I trained a recurrent neural network for an unsupervised classification task" it'd be treated as cutting edge science, and the former is the latter with a bigger, better configured network.

When I went to donate and they took my vitals, my resting heart rate was 48, actually below the range that they can take you at. (I had gotten a ride from my husband and was in a pretty relaxed and pleasant mood.) She said, "I need it over 50; you need to be less relaxed." I have an acquaintance who is bedazzling her 12-foot skeleton. She started just before last Halloween and expects it to take about a year. She gets high and watches TV and glues rhinestones to it. It relaxes her.

When we got the incredible extra-dark Quebec maple syrup, I wondered, if I mix this 1:1 with heavy cream and a pinch of salt and cook it to soft ball, would it be maple fudge?
It not only was, it's the best maple fudge I've ever had.
So then I wondered, if I beat this into softened butter, could it be maple fudge buttercream?
It's unreal. It's so good.
So today's experiment is, if I beat an egg and some flour and baking soda into maple fudge buttercream, can I make maple fudge brownies?

I was fascinated to learn that poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac are not particularly related to ivy, oak, or sumac. They are one family that learned the poison trick and then spread into the niches "vine," "tree," and "shrub." Their common names just come from looking vaguely similar to those other plants.

A million years ago, my then-boss said, "You're going to see the Dead in Albany?" I said yes. He said, "Well when you're tripping, you have to go and see the Egg."
I accepted this then-impenetrable wisdom and did eventually act on it, and only later did it occur to me that it was at all remarkable that my boss just assumed I would be tripping and we were all fine with that.
