Thank you to all of the contributors that helped to pay for our current month of server rent. $75 USD was given. And I always appreciate the contributions, and boots, to the fundraising. Especially the regular contributors. I would frame you all as my heroes.

So, I had a thought
If this spammer seems to be using us as a tool in a different spam. Could they just be a lazy one? Not bothering with random handle, stolen reasons, etc. And the waves of spam we got before/ still get are the less lazy ones w/ the handle, reason, etc? All to use the same method for elsewhere.
Where the less-lazy ones avoided being detected for this purpose, cause we just thought they wanted a fedi account to spam us with.

⚠️
There are reports of account hacking to spread spam thru the Fedi. Using emails and passwords leaked from other websites. Socel has already had 4 hacked accounts that posted spam & a slur.
I have already limited those accounts to prevent further spam. If you are one of them, please contact me. I also blocked some IPs.
For all Socelites, If you are using a password used on other websites, please change it to one just for Socel. Also recommend starting 2FA.

Tomorrow, the payment for Socel's server rent will be paid for the upcoming July 20- Aug 19 period. We currently have donations that cover 12% of our 239.00 USD goal. Today is the last day for any last min contributions. Which are very helpful to pay for the server that makes all of Socel possible. Please give what you can.

In one week, Socel's server rent will be submitted. Our Kofi currently stands at 10% of goal. Socelites, if you have something you can give safely, please think about if you can donate to the fund that helps keeps us all posting.

RE: https://mastodon.iftas.org/@iftas/116652198665234570
IFTAS is an independant organization that tries to help saftey matters on Open Social platforms. They track spam and malicious activity. And provide legal resources for social media issues.
Small instances dont have legal teams. And someone keeping tabs on bad actors on the fedi helps mods keep them at bay.
If you feel lke you can support saftey on the Open Social, they are not asking for much.

Today is the last day to donate to Socel's fund for the next month. If you are a Socelite, or a fan of Socelites, and can help out, you would be totally cool. Just like all of our regular, and irregular, donors.

The Fediverse relies on users' donation, rather than corporate money. That is freeing in alot of ways. But it isnt free. Someone has to pay for development, hosting, time. For that, servers rely on donations.
It isnt required by -every- user. But again, ~someone~ has to pay. If you can, help your server by donating to the instance's crowd fund.
Socelites, if you can, it would help. And be appreciated.

I'll do what I can.
First, I would not only look at the IFTAS site. I would also follow @npub1y2r…kvzk once you have the instance started. I recommend using the notification bell. Dig around at first, but it has all sorts of resources to help in running a server. And a great place to revisit when you have a question.

One person mod team here. And dont get much reports or spam activity. But that makes your work all the more important.
I have IFTAS on the notification bell to make sure I see them all. And Limit/Suspend 90% of the time. (I do what I can, but again, one person.)
I am always greatful for your alerts. And guides.
Tho, I see IFTAS as a resource like Wikipedia. So sarcasm in it feels.. off.

In a bit over a week, Socel's server rent will be due. Our Kofi :ko_fi: for Apr 20-May 19 is at 8%. If you can give whatever amount to help pay for it, it would be much appreciated.

Casual reminder to all that Portfolio Day is this Tuesday, 4/14.
This is a day that artists will post art to show what they have to see. With the hashtag #PortfolioDay.
As an artist, this is great to show off your work. For a viewer, this is a great way to find a new fav artist to follow, or even commission.
I wanted to remind Socel's artists, in case they need it.

Please help support Socel with a donation. Fedi servers are paid for by their owners. And provided as a service to the members. And sometime this service costs a fair amount. So contributing to your server's crowdfund can be a very big help. Please give what you can.

Today is the last day to donate to Socel's Kofi :ko_fi: for the Mar 20 to Apr 19 rent. If you have anything you can give, please do.
If every active member of Socel gave $2, we would be roughly fully funded. If half of our active Socelites gave 5$, we would be about fully funded. But I only ask for what can be given safely. But I also remind that someone has to pay the cost.

I think what I would like the most is both the projected benifits AND problems of allowlisting. Then to compare them to the cost-benifit we have in denylisting.
Then, look at which problems we can best address.

Also interested in the cost-benefit of one or combination of those tools, once defined.

2026-01-08 21:14:56 UTC

I cant deny that allowlisting would, or could, solve many problems. But I dont want to go without questioning what problems come with allowlisting. On small and large scale.
I'm not a software engineer, so I dont want to pie in the sky to a pipe dream here. But I would wonder what all those tools you mention would look like in combination, if possible. But, of course, it depends how those tools are defined going into hypothetical development.

Thank you for this report. It will help in seeing the wider picture of the Fedi and oprn social web.
I still remain resistant to allow-list based federation. I worry that doesnt reduce the work load. And makes the open web less open. If open at all, truely.
But, reading this, i do recognize there is a problem that deny-list is poor at solving.
If there is a answer that is degrees before allowlist only, I could be open to it.

FireFox has a feature where you can change the icon for it to a few selections. To where a different one appears on your desktop, or app list. One of those selections is made by @npub1uxq…5dcj, a fellow Socelite and Fedizen.
In the article below, it explains how to select the icon. And interviews Ruud on the creation of the icon.

Mastodon tip:
Boosting became a little complicated when quote posts came in. Now when you click :boost:, you have to click between regular boosting, and quote-posting.
Want to make regular boosting simpler? Try this. If you hold down a Shift key while clicking :boost:, it will regular boost. No need to select between the two options.

Hi all. Introducing a pilot project for Socel. I call it Socel Image. Every so often, for fun, I'll commission a Socelite or Fedi artist to make a temp avatar for this account. Something based on recent or timeless anim works.
This pilot image is by @npub1ayj…l33x. And they dont miss. Real princess grade work. Do you think it pops? What are the hard facts about what it is based on?
Still figuring out how this will work. But am very open to feedback. How would you like future images decided?

Socel is now on Masto v 4.5. The biggest thing is quote toots are now an option. And you have alot of options around that.
Like any tool, be responsible with it. But explore it. Customize your options. And figure out how you want it to work.

:blobcheer: It's portfolio day! Show off the best of your artwork, and add the #PortfolioDay hashtag to it. Add tags with the type of art for good measure.
Also, look around the hashtag too, throughout the day. And boost liberally. Especially if you find work you think should be shared.
You are not required to. But do know alot of ppl on the Fedi may not boost if there is no alt text in a pic.

Fediverse instances pay server rent. Usually, the admin is making sure the bill gets paid for that instance. And they could always use help. If you have the capacity to, please try to give to your instance's crowdfund.
Socelites, if you can, please use the link below to give for our server.

🍂 🍂
Led through the mists
By the milk-light of moon.
All- that was lost- is revealed.
Our long, bygone burdens
Mere ECHOES of the spring
But where have we come?
And where shall we end?
If dreams can't come true
Then why not- pretend?
🍂 🍂
Happy fall, everyone.

[Look out, there's a long wind coming. I- I mean 🧵]
Hi socelites. My name is Scott, or @npub1a7j…v8dq here. I'll be the new owner starting today. I've been in online communities for decades. I joined Socel in '19. I loved the idea of social media that is smaller scale in some ways. But is larger-scale as a community. I want to thank Charles for making this community. And taking care of it all these years. I love this place. And am grateful he considering me for this.

Hi All,
Some not-so-great news.
Our database continues to grow and we are being bumped to the next hosting tier. This will put our monthly hosting cost at around US$240, an increase of US$50.
Right now we have just US$35 in recurring contributions which leaves US$205 to be raised each and every month moving forward.
All options are on the table, but in the meantime, our Ko-Fi page is here: https://ko-fi.com/socel

What is the Fediverse 5-5-5 Challenge?
It's simple and you do it every day for five days (or over 7 days) and do three things every day.
1. Post five toots (new posts and/or replies)
2. Boost five toots
3. Follow five people
At the end, you will have a total of 50 toots in your profile and will follow 25 people.
More details are in the thread.
