Goodhart's law states when a metric becomes a target, it ceases to be a good metric.
This describes the phenomenon of companies creating leaderboards of AI token usage leading to tech workers racking up thousands of dollars in monthly spend on AI services to compete.
This is a temporary phenomenon that won’t last long. It’s like having a leaderboard of customers called for sales people. It might have been correlated with business value but is useless as a target.

Someone commented on my post about the U.S. government having to bail out OpenAI when the AI bubble pops by arguing we didn’t bail out dotcoms at the start of the millennium.
That was then. Today AI is already too big to fail. We bailed out Intel last year on the off chance that it might become good at making AI chips.
There’s zero chance we’d let OpenAI simply go out of business if it ran out of money because it spent more on datacenters than it made from ChatGPT subscriptions.

While debating whether AI can replace software developers or not is somewhat absurd, it’s hard to argue against the significant productivity boosts.
A friend shared with me how after a performance regression following a release, they asked AI to review all of the recent diffs for the culprit. It flagged a few suspicious ones and on review one of them was the cause.
I imagine this is happening in every industry which is why Azure/AWS/GCP have more demand for AI than they can handle.

I keep thinking about how I long felt it was condescending to describe people as voting against their own interests.
Today I learned a bunch of medical centers in my area are closing due to government cuts. Tariffs have caused prices of many products to go up. And the country’s credit rating just tanked.
If you voted for this, then you voted against your interests. There are a tiny sliver of billionaires who are better off but the vast majority of us are in a much worse position than last year

1. AI usage questions will be added to the performance and peer review process.
2. Requests for more headcount or resources must include justification for why AI can’t do it instead.
A recession will be a true proving ground for AI as a way to boost productivity and eliminate jobs. Shopify is ahead of the curve on this but many will follow if tariffs stick.
