When I quit after smoking for 20+ years I kept and unopened pack of cigarettes in my car’s glove box. There was something about knowing they were accessible that kept me calm enough not to smoke them. I quit a 1 to 2 pack a day habit cold turkey. It was the hardest thing I’ve done. They were in the car for over two years after I quit.

Using old miner such as an underclocked S9 in place of a cheap electric space heater is ok if you’re just curious about mining. If you’re going to use an electric heater at least you’re earning a minuscule amount of sats when connected to a mining pool or you can take the chance and play the solo mining to find a block by yourself.

Here are some ideas in this video. If you’re buying from Bill Bitcoin you can use Liquid Bitcoin as an way to save until fees are low or you have enough saved. You don’t have use a hardware wallet for your Liquid Bitcoin. You could use a mobile wallet like Blockstream Green. Then swap to on-chain Bitcoin to cold storage.

I helped a few of Bitcoiners in our meetup group get their own S9’s with the fan upgrades and Braiins OS. They are living in apartments with electric heat, baseboard heaters. So it is a no brainer for them to run S9’s for heat and turn off the baseboard heaters. Same cost factor and they earn some non-KYC sats. Win win!

Running three S9’s, underclocked with fan upgrades, as space heaters. We have a natural gas furnace and I calculated at my current rates for gas and electricity it is 3 times for expensive to heat with electricity. There is the benefit of some non-KYC sats, and setting back the temperature on the thermostat for the natural gas furnace. Helping secure and decentralize the network with a minuscule amount of hash power not included in the top three mining pools. The best part is the ability to talk about bitcoin when people come to our B&B as ask; “What is that?”

Last month Shakepay, a Canadian exchange registered with FINTRAC discontinued their Shakepay Earn program where they offered 4% APR paid monthly in Bitcoin on all cash balances up to $1k. Your money was not locked-in or rehypothiecated. There was no reason given why the program was discontinued.
