That is a very important distinction to keep in mind, Sara. Sometimes stress, worry, grief, and anger are healthy responses to the world.
The unhealthy stuff builds up, though, when you aren't able to actually do anything about the causes of all the bad feelings.

Yeah. It's like: I'm not trying to prevent people making hobbyist websites! But when large organizations pay an agency to build a website for them, they should be assured that the developers are familiar with core HTML concepts like hyperlinks.

Sometimes, I wish "software engineer" actually *was* a regulated profession, so we could revoke the licence of anyone who builds a website with links that are not actually links and do not open in a new tab when you Ctrl-Click on them.

Yeah, the #mstdnca status page basically only reports whether or not the servers are responding quickly or not. It doesn't integrate anything about whether they are responding with errors, or empty content, or any of the many other ways a website can fail.

Looks like #mstdnca has gone into read-only mode. Can't post, can't even star someone else's post (both give generic 500 errors). The local live feed has a last post at 5:47AM Alberta time, nearly 3 hours ago. (Actually, all feeds cut off around that time, so it's not processing incoming content from elsewhere, either.) Still serving posts from before then.
Nothing on https://status.mstdn.ca/ so I'm pinging @npub170y…28tz from here 👋🏻 (Although I guess that won't work, since he's on mstdn.ca ...)

"investor" is a mixed category, though. There is certainly the class of hedge-fund type investor who optimizes for short-term revenues rather than long-term profitability, and I wonder how many people like that are managing investment portfolios for people who would prefer to invest in stable businesses?

If I'm on an actively moderated server that blocks a certain hate-troll server, it will block any replies from accounts on that server, even with a fetch-all-replies option. So they'll still be invisible to me.

This will help with invisible attackers, but not eliminate them because of a) followers-only replies and b) server-level blocks.
Followers-only replies are apparently used by some of the worst harassers to start pile-ons without anyone other than their target reporting it.
Server-level blocks protect you from the worst, but also mean that you still won't see blocked accounts harassing someone without those protections.
Fetch all replies will mostly reduce well-meaning duplicates.

OK, #CSSWG folks, whose brilliant idea was it to make auto-generated heading IDs for anchor links in the CSS spec end with ① or ② or ⑤ characters (for the 1st, 2nd, or 5th heading in a section without an otherwise specified ID).
Looks very cute in a URL bar, but gets copy & pasted as URL encoded character barf. And then there's the likely screen-reader mangling of special characters.
This had better be for Editor's drafts only & prompt a warning to add custom IDs before publication.

Yeah, the status page is really underselling it. It's much worse than "sluggish response times".
I can load the mstdn.ca website. It's only a little sluggish that way. I can even post something. But I'm not getting any feed entries or notifications over there, and stuff I posted this morning isn't showing up if I look at that account from here.

I ended up watching about half of the 40-minute doc. Interesting to know about the story, but I'm not *that* much of an old-timey fiddle fan.
GB Grayson has a lot of similarities to blues guitarist Robert Johnson: folk musician in the US south who recorded a few sessions in the 1920s, then died young, but those sessions have been covered countless times since. But Johnson's name & recordings became famous from a 1960s album compilation. I guess that didn't happen with Grayson.

Hey @npub1t0w…zgs2, I'm getting a little annoyed at you hanging out in my open tabs, staring impatiently at the stuff I'm actually reading instead of finally getting back to the video in your blog post.
This might be what makes me declare open-tabs bankruptcy. There's a lot that have been waiting for much longer than you!
(But at least it's not the grumpy-tough-guy pic from your site header! Now that's a Chris you don't want to leave waiting.)

If you're on the main pixelfed.social server, I think they're getting a bit crunched by the sudden increase in usage, so that might have been part of it?
But still, the app should hold onto your draft & let you re-try if there are server errors.

Do other apps use the text?
There would need to be a few things working together: the OS would need to somehow include the extra metadata when you drop / paste / choose an image file for the app, and the app would need to know to look for it & use it. And if it's a web app, then both the browser & website would need to do so.
And there are then potential privacy issues if images include hidden metadata. Although, that's already true of EXIF data, unless the OS explicitly strips it.

It's a bit of an HTML limitation, that there's no way to map referrer URLs to a sanitized or canonical URL, without obfuscating the actual destination to pass it through a link service (like t.co). I guess too much potential for abuse?
Examples: for public posts, I'd want the referrer to be the canonical URL of the post, not the URL of the post as processed on my server.
For private/followers-only posts, I'd want the referrer (if any) to be some anonymized version of the network domain.

You have to use the `::marker` pseudoelement for fancier bullet styling options. (with some restrictions on styles you can use, but easier than making list-style-* properties for everything!)

If by broken you mean the hashtag picker is hard to dismiss & pretty much impossible to dismiss on mobile, yep. If there's something else, I haven't noticed it (I don't actually try to pick tags from the pop-up very often).

Thoughts on Mastodon 4.3 updates, now that I've got used to them:
Good: Click-to-show image alt text as proper HTML text.
Better: if you could show alt text without downloading/showing images that are hidden because of sensitive setting or data saving, or because they haven't yet been cached from an external server.
Good: Conversation view warns that some replies may not be shown for posts from other servers.
Better: Add a click to fetch them, instead of linking to the other server.

I'm not sure about the long shadow on the number, though. That's not something you can do in CSS without hacky code.
Are we acknowledging that hacky code, pushing the limits of the specified properties to create additional design effects, is really an intrinsic & eternal part of #CSS?

The server for my other account is currently having technical issues including delays sending out posts to other servers.
Which is why I boosted an only-relevant-to-Edmonton-area-followers but time-sensitive post from that account. I don't think anyone who'd be interested follows this account & not that one. But, some people follow both & I'm hoping that's enough to get the post federated to servers where the relevant followers are.
Federated social networks: somehow both unreliable & robust.

Yes, #mstdnca had major issues yesterday after a software update (& I think switching some services to Chad's new home server at the same time). The web app is now working today, but federation is definitely on a few-hours delay.
If there's a particular account you want to check for updates, you should be able to see it on the profile on mstdn.ca. Otherwise, we're just hoping it gets sorted soon.

Ah, but Amadeus has a point: In order to have a transition, it's not enough to have multiple styles competing in the cascade. There has to be an initial time when those styles didn't apply.
Unless you use the new @ starting-style rule, but I don't think that's well supported yet.
