I love the fact that we don't have a centralized naming system/issuer for NOSTR -- keeps it free/open/flexible/censorship resistant. We've got NIP-05 which helps with more friendly names, but that ultimately outsources the problem back to DNS and the traditional domain system. This means we still inherit the points of control around ICANN and domain owners.
I think we should have a friendly username system on NOSTR which is not dependent on DNS in any way. To do this well you need to come up with a protocol/agreement for how these get issued. I should be able to show up and say "I'll take 'monkey'", for example, and as long as no one else has claimed it yet I should be able to get it.
The obvious problem is "won't all early users of such a system just name-squat on all the good names". That's usually what would happen, unless we could introduce a cost to acquiring a name. But the cost should not be paid to any centralized provider. So the concept I've been writing about I call "name-bonds". You can use the digital scarcity property of bitcoin to limit how many names someone can issue to themselves based on how much bitcoin they will bond to the name. Tie it to digital scarcity and you can make issuance more fair.
Still trying to get feedback/thinking on the high-level idea. Have you seen anything like this? Do you believe such a system could work?

3. It’s a little tricky to find good accounts to follow. I might suggest looking at the accounts of some people who seem reasonable to you, check their profile and see who they follow. Then follow some of the people they follow quite liberally to populate your feed with interesting/active stuff. I hope we can make this easier for new users at some point

If you could solve name-squatting would you find it useful?
e.g. simple use case: imagine you see someone on a video interview and they have a by-line at the bottom of the screen where they can have their handle listed so you can find/follow them on nostr to learn more
I agree WoT solves a lot, but I’m not convinced that it solves certain high impact, but possibly lower volume use-case

I agree that names are merely conventions, but I also think it’s helpful to have a unique namespace that allows me to tell someone how to find me even if we’re not directly connected through WoT. I’d guess such connections are an important way of creating WoT density.

censorship-resistance doesn’t mean all of your notes should get seen by everyone at all times. you should be able to publish/share whatever you want and it should be visible to anyone who wants to see it (at the time they’d like to see it)
the tough part is clients need to try to infer when someone might want to see it
if someone follows me, presumably they want to see notes from me (they’re opting their attention into that). If I mute someone/something in a reply to my note that a consumer might otherwise see then a client is taking signal from me (via my mute action) that consumers who arrive at that note via my thread likely don’t want to see that note.
you should still be able to navigate to that muted note if you know that replier’s profile and want to browse notes they wrote. that’s how censorship-resistance works

Is Nostr dependent on bitcoin?

If you drop by Nostr even casually, it can often feel like you’re crashing a bitcoiner dinner party. The memes, the FOSS devs, the topics of conversation often seem to overlap with bitcoin culture. Is this just a case of “birds-of-a-feather” or is there more to it?
Nostr is an open protocol. It’s independent of the use or existence of any cryptocurrency. It uses cryptography, but nothing super fancy there. It’s actually kinda basic, tbh.
So why did so many bitcoiners show up? A simple explanation might be that fiatjaf, the creator of Nostr, was a bitcoiner and brought like-minded people along. But I think there’s more to it than just the initial seed.
The critical feature which Nostr gets right is that you can create an account just by doing math on your own. Of course, you can use a little program on your own computer to help do this math (i.e., creating public-private key pairs). This is cryptography at its best — a tool that empowers the individual.
You don’t have to go to a 3rd-party-issuer to create an account for you. You don’t have to subscribe to a particular cryptocurrency or political ideology. You could identify as a libertarian, anarchist, democrat, republican, labor party, or you may not accept any political labels at all.
On Nostr, you’re welcome to even dislike the concept of bitcoin/cryptocurrencies altogether. As long as you have a curiosity about, or interest in freedom of speech you may find Nostr to be a good place for you to share your thoughts. On Nostr, your ideas and your words are published without being subject to anyone’s permission. The separation of power between clients and data stores is what enforces your rights. It’s baked into the architecture. Not promised and granted to you by a demagogue. I’ll start by saying “thank you” to you because without nostr we wouldn’t have the freedom/ability to run such experiments.
I agree that a bunch of people will revert to dopamine, social bubbles, and phone-zombie behavior like you suggest if given an easy glide path. But I wonder, who will build/optimize those algorithms? If developers are not incentivized by being coupled to an ad serving platform maybe we’ll see different results — maybe we’ll get some of the same, but we could also get a lot of wild experimentation that turns out to discover other things people want.
I suspect we could see different algorithms at different points in a user lifecycle/journey. One algo to onboard new users to their first few follows/connections. Maybe a new interface that lets people preview content before selecting who to follow. Maybe there should be a lot more “for you” content driven by notes and following suggestions should be a side-effect of which notes you react/zap from people you aren’t yet following. There’s just so much greenfield to explore and nostr makes this possible. Corporate controlled algos will all trend toward serving the corporation’s goals, but open/transparent/switchable/pluggable algorithms can be built to serve end-user goals which will almost certainly be different since no one’s primary goal in life is to view an ad.
I think “proof of work” on finding the good people/content is fine for now — slightly annoying, but not devastating. We put in the effort. Though we miss so many valuable ideas/connections this way.
But I believe nostr has the right architecture to serve most publishing needs on the Internet and create a whole new layer of what is “the web”. I would estimate there are at least 1B+ public messages shared on the Internet each day. There’s not enough time in my day (no matter how committed I am to “doing the work”) to filter them all for the stuff I care about or might like to see. I need computational help (i.e. an algorithm) to do this properly. What great people/ideas/relationships could come into my life if only there were a way to match us with the right context?

I suspect there are two possible forms of breakout growth for nostr:
1) some totally new experience that can’t be done with existing platforms (e.g. zaps).
2) appreciation of the neutrality causes some other at/sub-scale networks to opt for nostr as a way to avoid dealing with content moderation/“free-speech” goals directly
I think censorship resistance and interoperability are correct, but too theoretical for most users to care about directly.

I wouldn’t say it’s a huge risk particularly, but good to know the tradeoffs. I host a NIP-05 “username” at stacker.news. Just be aware that if you tell people “you can reach me on nostr by looking for markola@nostrplebs.com” that could become a common way people look for you.
then some day, for whatever reason, you say something that gets a government upset - they could try to hassle nostrplebs.com to take down your NIP-05 mapping. Anyone you’re connected to on nostr already will continue to be connected since connections happen around the NPUB/cryptography, but new people looking for you might find it hard to find you

RSS is very timestamp oriented, so yes we have lots of Nostr clients that are timestamp oriented like RSS.
“sorts/filters based on your input” is a very underexplored design space (and very interesting to me).

all nostr clients use algorithms
most just choose the algorithm of sorting messages in timestamp order
this is the most neutral algorithm, it’s attractive ideologically
it’s a stark contrast to the corporate-controlled engagement algorithms we’re accustomed to on the rest of the web. It feels like a breath of fresh air. it makes nostr feel peaceful
but it also makes it hard to find areas of activity and energy which might match my interests. what happened while I was gone? what do I not know about yet, but might I find interesting?
if an algorithm is designed to attempt to bait me into anger/rage for the purposes of serving me an ad, then this is an algorithm I would like the power to opt out of. It’s designed to serve me an ad, not to inform me
I want to choose algorithms that serve my interest to learn from people I trust (e.g. show me the notes from people I don’t follow, but who are most zapped by people I have zapped; surface notes that are replies to notes I may have seen and zapped but which are gaining a lot of zaps/replies themselves)
we can create algorithms that serve the needs of users and not the needs of corporations. They can be transparent (how do they work?) and pluggable (add/remove which algorithms you see fit). This is a different approach with different incentives from any existing algorithms in social media. “Show me the incentives I’ll show you the outcome.” We’ve never seen the outcome with this set of incentives.
I want a nostr that’s more alive and points me towards hubs of energy/activity, but is structured in service of me
